for her behavior, which is causing problems at school and with her Mo<strong>the</strong>r. The truth about <strong>the</strong> Clown<br />
(visible to <strong>the</strong> audience) is slowly revealed as Peggy realizes that her Fa<strong>the</strong>r is dead. The Clown, who has<br />
been a fa<strong>the</strong>r-substitute in her mind, is no longer needed, and says good-bye.<br />

Arthur Crew Inman was a Boston recluse who, in order to gain immortality, obsessively documented <strong>the</strong><br />
countless stories (in diaries that run to 155 volumes) related to him by people whom he would pay, in<br />
order to hear about <strong>the</strong>ir lives in intimate detail. He was especially interested in young women, and was<br />
known to have been sexually involved with several of <strong>the</strong>m. He committed suicide in 1963.<br />
