Es<strong>the</strong>r was made queen by <strong>the</strong> Persian king Ahasuerus. When <strong>the</strong> king’s chief minister planned to kill all<br />
<strong>the</strong> Jews in an act of vengeance against his arch-enemy, Es<strong>the</strong>r revealed to <strong>the</strong> king that she was Jewish,<br />
and pleaded for her people. Her triumph was hard-won: Ahasuerus could not revoke <strong>the</strong> extermination<br />
edict, but instead, allowed <strong>the</strong> Jews to arm <strong>the</strong>mselves. Their successful defense is commemorated to this<br />
day in <strong>the</strong> annual festival of Purim.<br />

Venus, accidentally wounded with one of Cupid’s arrows, falls in love with Adonis, who is not at all<br />

Jenny, a 99-year-old woman, wanders at night in a London park. While young lovers are occupied on<br />
<strong>the</strong> park benches, she falls into conversation with a young photographer, remembering her youth and her<br />
loves. The young lovers of <strong>the</strong> present are confused with ghosts of <strong>the</strong> past, and <strong>the</strong> lines between life and<br />
death become blurred.<br />
