Prologue and three acts
Libretto by Denis Johnston
Publisher: Theodore Presser Company
Musically, dramatically, and symbolically, the opera deals with the unprecedented moral problems caused
by the circumstances of the Second World War. Actual happenings and imaginary events are juxtaposed.
In the final analysis, the characters face personal responsibility for making the choice between right and
wrong, and the conclusion that, though we are all “dirty,” we are not all damned.
of the absurd.
