4QpIsa b . <strong>The</strong> first text is <strong>the</strong> fragmentary pesher on Isaiah conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> 4Q162. This text<br />

"consists ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g biblical verses: Isa 5:5b (?), 6a (?), 11-14, 24c-25, and 29b-30<br />

(?)." 40 It beg<strong>in</strong>s with <strong>the</strong> text <strong>of</strong> Isa. 5:5b, and follows with its <strong>in</strong>terpretation. <strong>The</strong> key text is:<br />

2) ...] <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> phrase is that he has forsaken <strong>the</strong>m<br />

That this fragment is <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g Isa. 5:5b is clear 42 even though <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g reference to 5:5b is<br />

limited to פר [ ץ גדרו ויהי למרמס ('I bro]ke down its fence and it was for trampl<strong>in</strong>g). 43 Two <strong>in</strong>terpretive<br />

issues <strong>in</strong> this fragment are relevant. <strong>The</strong> first is <strong>the</strong> biblical citation <strong>of</strong> Isa. 5:5b <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> MT reads והיה למרמס ('and it will be for trampl<strong>in</strong>g'). <strong>The</strong> weqatal form והיה must be un-<br />

<strong>of</strong> Brook, Allegro and Williamson <strong>of</strong> a past tense wayyiqtol which is <strong>in</strong> keep<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpretive tendencies <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Qumran community.<br />
