4Q500. <strong>The</strong> second Qumranic fragment that is important for our study <strong>of</strong> Second Temple<br />
Jewish <strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>of</strong> Isa. 5:1-7 is <strong>the</strong> small but important fragment 4Q500. 50 <strong>The</strong> text <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> association <strong>of</strong> this text with Isa. 5:1-7 has been conv<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>gly argued by Baumgarten<br />
and Brooke. <strong>The</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> textual reasons for <strong>the</strong> association are 1) <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>epress<br />
כפות) branches' <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e 3 <strong>of</strong> this text and Isa. 5:2; 2) <strong>the</strong> association <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 'delightful (יקב)<br />
<strong>in</strong> Isa. 5:7; and 3) <strong>the</strong> very (נטע שׁעשׁועיו) plant<strong>in</strong>g' <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e 6 and <strong>the</strong> 'his pleasant (שעשועיכה<br />
probable reconstruction <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e 7 as<br />
'your [v<strong>in</strong>e]yard.' 52 With <strong>the</strong> association between ] וכר מכה [<br />
this text and Isa. 5:1-7 clearly <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d we can see <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpretive decisions by <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong><br />
4Q500.<br />
50 This fragment was orig<strong>in</strong>ally published by Baillet, Qumran, 78-79, pl., xxvii. He titled it 'BeÍneÍdiction' and<br />
associated it with <strong>the</strong> 4Q502 family, but this association has s<strong>in</strong>ce been questioned.<br />
51 <strong>The</strong> text is <strong>the</strong> reconstruction proposed by Joseph M. Baumgarten, "4Q500 and <strong>the</strong> Ancient Conception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Lord's V<strong>in</strong>eyard," JJS 40 (1989): 1-6, with <strong>the</strong> mispr<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> בכ]איבה corrected to .בכ]איכה <strong>The</strong> translation is from<br />
George J. Brooke, "4Q500 1 and <strong>the</strong> Use <strong>of</strong> Scripture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Parable</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V<strong>in</strong>eyard," <strong>in</strong> idem., <strong>The</strong> Dead Sea<br />
Scrolls and <strong>the</strong> New Testament (M<strong>in</strong>neapolis, MN: Fortress Press, 2005, 235-60; orig<strong>in</strong>ally published as "4Q500 1<br />
and <strong>the</strong> Use <strong>of</strong> Scripture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Parable</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V<strong>in</strong>eyard," DSD 2 (1995): 268-94; throughout our engagement with<br />
this article we will use <strong>the</strong> pag<strong>in</strong>ation from <strong>The</strong> Dead Sea Scrolls and <strong>the</strong> New Testament.<br />

Baumgarten , "4Q500," 1-2. In fact, Brooke, "4Q500," 236, proposes that we can be even confident enough to<br />
reconstruct <strong>the</strong> text <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e 7 as וכ]רמכה because "<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>k traces at <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e are entirely compatible with<br />
