y <strong>the</strong> fact that it goes back to Jesus. 15 We are <strong>the</strong>refore look<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> plausible Jesus, <strong>the</strong> Jesus<br />
who plausibly fits with<strong>in</strong> his Jewish context and who plausibly <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early<br />
Christian faith. 16<br />
If, <strong>the</strong>refore, we stand with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Third Quest for <strong>the</strong> Historical Jesus and assume that it is<br />
most likely that <strong>the</strong> Jesus tradition developed <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with (and obviously <strong>in</strong>fluenced by) <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />
words spoken by Jesus and that a historically plausible Jesus is one which is both similar<br />
enough to his Jewish heritage to be recognizable and yet radical enough to be crucifiable <strong>the</strong>n we<br />
are unpersuaded by <strong>the</strong> various non-contextual <strong>in</strong>terpretations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Parable</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Wicked</strong> <strong>Tenants</strong><br />
for a number <strong>of</strong> reasons. <strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> this essay is to show that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Parable</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Wicked</strong><br />
<strong>Tenants</strong> as it stands <strong>in</strong> its synoptic context is both a plausibly Jewish <strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Song <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> V<strong>in</strong>eyard (Isa. 5:1-7) and yet a plausibly controversial but characteristic part <strong>of</strong> Jesus message<br />
so as to be <strong>of</strong>fensive to his Jewish contemporaries. In <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g pages we will exam<strong>in</strong>e<br />
several different Second Temple Jewish <strong>in</strong>terpretations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Song <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V<strong>in</strong>eyard to see how<br />
Jesus' <strong>in</strong>terpretation fits with<strong>in</strong> typical Second Temple Jewish <strong>in</strong>terpretation. We will <strong>the</strong>n briefly<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> <strong>Parable</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Wicked</strong> <strong>Tenants</strong> to show that it is characteristically Jewish enough to<br />
be believable <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first century and that it is controversial enough to have upset Jesus' contemporaries.<br />
This picture fits quite well with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> third quest for <strong>the</strong> historical Jesus, and <strong>the</strong> criteria<br />
<strong>of</strong> double similarity and double dissimilarity and <strong>the</strong> 'characteristic' Jesus suggest that <strong>in</strong> fact, <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Parable</strong> as it exists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> synoptics is very plausible on <strong>the</strong> lips <strong>of</strong> Jesus.<br />
