Event description
Do you want to get low this summer? Then join us in a grand tour of the lowlands! For two
weeks you will travel through The Netherlands and Belgium by train and hitchhiking. This
way you will be dipped in both cultures and experience the Dutch and Belgian ways of life.
No worries, you do not need any skills in hitchhiking, we will teach you everything you need
to know.
The most important part is that you will have fun!
The Summer University will start in Utrecht where AEGEE-Nijmegen and AEGEE-Leuven
will give you a warm welcome. From here we will make trips to its seat of government, The
Hague and optionally to the Dutch capital Amsterdam.
On the 13th of July we will hitchhike to Nijmegen, which will then be host to an international
four day marching event and a large music festival.
On the 17th of July we will hitchhike to Belgium. Leuven will be the first city to visit here. It
is situated in the centre of Belgium, not far from Brussels, the capital of Belgium. It is one of
the oldest
student cities in Europe. After a day trip to Brussels on the national day of Belgium you will
move to the last city of the programme: Ghent. This is a beautiful city where you can enjoy
the biggest (free) festival in Belgium, the famous "Gentse Feesten".
Places visited
Utrecht
Utrecht is the 4th largest city in Holland and located in the middle of the country. It has
been the religious center of the Netherlands since the eighth century and one of the most
important Dutch
cities. This city has a medieval city center surrounded by canals and hosts the largest
university of Holland: Utrecht University.
Nijmegen
Nijmegen is a large student city located near the German border. Founded by the Romans,
Nijmegen is considered to be the oldest city in the Netherlands and celebrated its 2000th
anniversary in 2005. Nijmegen is famous for the Four Day March festival, which we will
attend during this Summer University.
Leuven
Leuven is a relatively small city and home to the Catholic University of Leuven, the oldest
and largest university of the country. It is therefore renowned as a student city, with a lively
atmosphere and a big variety of civil society organisations. Leuven has a beautiful historic
center and is located ideally within Belgium, only 20 minutes away from the capital,
Brussels. Furthermore, the city is famous for its beer brewery, which belongs to one of the
