The Critical Section Problem • This is to model a situation in which two or more endless processes have critical sections in which it is certain that only one process is executing, i.e: ◾Statements from the critical regions of two or more process must not be interleaved. • We also need to be certain that processes are safe from one another in other ways: ◾No deadlock: if some processes are trying to execute their critical sections, one will succeed, ◾No starvation: if any process tries to execute its critical region, it will succeed eventually. 96 Trinity College Dublin © Mike Brady 2007–2009
The Critical Section Problem (2) • We must develop some kind of a synchronization mechanism. ◾Before the critical region, a sequence of setup statements called a preprotocol. ◾After the critical region, a sequence of teardown statements called a postprotocol. • Our task is to develop pre- and postprotocols to ensure mutual exclusion from critical region execution, i.e. ◾We must ensure that statements from the critical regions of processes are not interleaved. 97 Trinity College Dublin © Mike Brady 2007–2009
