British Planning History *
1900 - 1952
The British planning system and its supporting institutions, journals and educational structure has become a
powerful force in the 20 th century, not only in Britain, but also throughout the world. While Britain has derived
planning ideas from other countries, such as land use controls from Germany and parkways from the United States,
she has also exported ideas, techniques, institutions, professional training and personnel on a large scale, both to the
British Dominions and former colonies and to other countries, such as America and Japan.
Archbishop Ussher (d.1656) discovered this manuscript and attributed it to Caedmon and though it is now believed
that he was mistaken, it is still called the Caedmon manuscript. It consists of poems telling the Bible stories and is
illustrated with Saxon drawings of around 1100.
