“Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily
portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my
instructions or not.” (EXODUS 16:4)
God frowns upon it when we take or keep more than we need.
When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of
manna, that which they hoarded away became wormy and
rotten. In the same way, God calls us today to be content
with a fair portion and to be willing to share the rest.

2012 CATHOLIC WOMEN’S RECOGNITION CEREMONY: I have some very great news to announce.
Our parishioner Vicki Houska has been chosen as one of several women in our Archdiocese
to receive the Unconditional Commitment Award at the 2012 Catholic Women’s Recognition
Ceremony next Sunday, August 12, 2:00 PM, at Holy Spirit Parish in Maryland Heights. As
the letter announcing her selection states, she is being “honored among this year’s group of inspiring women who
have answered God’s call to dedicate themselves to the care of another, women who continually place the needs
of someone else before their own. The model for the Unconditional Commitment Award is (the Old Testament figure)
Ruth.” These awards will be presented by Archbishop Carlson. Vicki was chosen by our Parish Council for
this award because of her work with FAST (Foster Adoption Support Team) which assists families who either
adopt children or who serve as foster parents for in-need children. Look for more information about this ceremony
in this coming Friday’s edition of The St. Louis Review. Vicki, congratulations! We are proud of you!
THIS TUESDAY’S ELECTIONS: Please be sure to vote this coming Tuesday. Not only is it a primary election in
preparation for this November’s general election, but there are also choices to be made which have great significance.
One item in particular up for a vote is Amendment 2, the Missouri prayer amendment. As the Missouri Family
Policy Council stated in a recent email, “Voters throughout Missouri will be heading to the polls in a few weeks
to vote on Amendment 2. This important proposal is the Missouri Prayer Amendment. It is the most significant
statewide election ever held in the state of Missouri on the subject of religious freedom. The Missouri Prayer
Amendment will amend Missouri's Constitution to protect the rights of Missouri citizens and schoolchildren to express
and share their religious beliefs. The amendment will ensure that students in the public schools will be able
to pray on a voluntary basis. The amendment provides that citizens can gather on public property to honor God
and join in community prayer. The amendment guarantees that public officials can acknowledge God in public proceedings
and that invocations can be offered before government meetings.” As stated in the July 13 th issue of The
St. Louis Review, the Missouri Catholic Conference endorses the passage of this amendment.
A FOND FAREWELL AND BEST WISHES to Father Don Henke who has been residing among us as well as
helping out this Summer. Father Henke leaves this coming Saturday for his assignment as a faculty member at the
North American College in Rome. It is a three to five year commitment, but don’t despair. Father Henke plans to
spend his Christmases and summers with us while assigned there. If you’ll be in Rome, don't forget to look him up!
LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA: Please remember the Lighthouse Catholic Media audio CD being offered his
month in our Gathering Space. Jeff Cavins is a most interesting speaker, and, when you have listened to his CD,
please give it to someone else who will benefit from listening to it as well. What a nice, simple, unintimidating way
to evangelize someone!
A RECENTLY RECEIVED EMAIL that I thought you’d like to read; it’s entitled simply “Whispers.”
The man whispered, 'God, speak to me' and a meadowlark sang. But, the man did not hear. So the man
yelled, 'God, speak to me' and the thunder rolled across the sky. But, the man did not listen. The man
looked around and said, 'God let me see you.' And a star shined brightly. But the man did not see. And,
the man shouted, 'God show me a miracle.' And, a life was born. But, the man did not notice. So, the man
cried out in despair, 'Touch me God, and let me know you are here.' Whereupon, God reached down and
touched the man. But, the man brushed the butterfly away and walked on. I found this to be a great reminder
that God is always around us in the little and simple things that we take for granted...even in our
electronic age. So I would like to add one more: The man cried, 'God, I need your help!' And an e-mail arrived
reaching out with good news and encouragement. But, the man deleted it and continued crying.
Don't miss out on a blessing because it isn't packaged the way that you expect.
How true! Our God does speak in whispers, but so often we have so much “white noise” (white noise is that distracting
static sound you hear when TV or radio station is not perfectly coming in) going on around us every day
that we don’t even notice the presence of God in our lives, but again remember that God’s presence is like the air,
that, is, even though we feel it, smell it, hear it, touch it, taste it or even realize that it is present, the air is always
with us, and, without it, we die. So too with God’s love; even though we may not feel it, smell it, hear it, touch it,
taste it or even realize that it is present, God’s love is always with us, and, without it too, we die.
THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL here at St. Cletus is this coming Wednesday. That being so, I thought you would
appreciate the following prayer. Please use it with your families, and feel free to pass it along:
Father, we thank you for the opportunity to begin this new school year, and we ask that you bless the students,
faculty, and student families that make our school a great place. We pray that you will guide us in
all ways, so that we will seek your will in everything that we do. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

able to live the Gospel. Gospel living is
something so simple as taking the time to
listen to those who need to spill out their
hearts when seeking help.

A TRIP TO THE HOLY LAND AND TO GREECE
Remember that our pastor, Father Jim Benz, is planning
to lead a ten day trip to the Holy Land (January 21-
30) with an optional four day trip to Greece (January 30-
February 2). The cost of the basic ten day Holy Land
pilgrimage is $3447 from St. Louis. The cost of the optional

If you are not a registered voter or if you
have moved to a new address on August
11 and 12 we will have voter registration
cards available for you to register to
vote or change your registration record to your current
address. A person can register at age 17 ½, but must be
18 on or before Election Day in order to vote. You must
be registered to vote by October 10 in order to
vote on November 6.
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., in his Letter from a Birmingham
Jail, cited St. Augustine that “an unjust law is
no law at all.” And he asked, “How does one determine
when a law is just or unjust? A just law is a man-made
code that squares with the moral law or the law of God.
An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the
moral law.” He then went on to say, “To put it in the
terms of St. Thomas Aquinas, an unjust law is a human
law that is not rooted in eternal and natural law.” There
you have the ancient teaching of the Catholic Church
summed up by a Baptist preacher under arrest for living
by it.

Eucharistic Adoration
The essence of our call to conversion continues
to be reflected in the words which
God spoke to his people of old through
Moses: "Be holy, for I, the LORD your
God, am holy" (Lev 19:2). And in his encyclical
letter on the Eucharist issued in
1965 and entitled, Mystery of Faith, Paul VI said that
"The most efficacious way of growing in holiness is
time spent with Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament."
The fruit of this belief has been attested by
many in recent times through the practice of opening
chapels of adoration in parishes so that ordinary, common
folks can spend at least an hour a week (a "holy
hour") before the Eucharistic presence of Our Lord. All
our welcome anytime! If you can help with one of the

Parish School of Religion New Parent Meeting
There is a Meeting on Wednesday, August 8 at 7:00
p.m., for all parents or guardians who are NEW to
the Parish School of Religion. The meeting will be
held in the Duchesne Room of the Parish Center (lower
level of church).
PSR PARENT PACKETS
Parent Packets for everyone who has registered in
our Parish School of Religion can be picked up in the
Gathering Space at Church. These packets contain
important information about the program and the
beginning of the school year. PSR classes begin
Monday, August 20 at 6:15 p.m.. Any family who still
needs to register for PSR is asked to do so BEFORE

HOUR OF PRAYER BEFORE ELECTIONS
The upcoming election is critical for many reasons and as
concerned Catholics we must pray for all elected officials
and then let our voices be heard by casting our votes.
Please join us Monday, August 6, 2012 at 6:00pm in Our
Lady’s Chapel for one hour of Adoration, Prayer and
Benediction for all candidates and elected officials that
they use Godly judgment in their elected positions that
are pleasing to God. As decisions are being made to then
remember the importance of “Life” at all stages and support
religious freedom for all.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC?

activities of the Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Center.

ST. PAUL PARISH PICNIC
On Sunday, September 2, 2012, St. Paul Parish in St. Paul
will conduct its 144 th annual picnic. Directions: Take interstate
70 to Hwy 79 North (exit 220), go 5 1/2 miles to
Hackmann Road (Look for St. Paul Billboard). Make a left
onto Hackmann Road go two miles to the church. Family
style kettle beef and chicken dinners will be served from
11:00 a.m. – 7 p.m. Come out and enjoy live entertainment,
crafts, quilts, country store, games for the whole
family and play area for the kids.
FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students)
is a national outreach that meets college students
where they are and invites them into a growing relationship
with Jesus Christ and the Catholic faith, inspiring
and equipping them for a lifetime of Christcentered
evangelization, discipleship, and friendship
in which they lead others to do the same. FOCUS
sends teams of young, trained missionaries to the
college campus in order to reach students with the
gospel. In partnership with the university parish and/
or Newman Center, FOCUS missionaries host large
group outreach events, weekly Bible studies and offer
one-on-one mentoring with student leaders. You

BACK TO SCHOOL MIXER AT DUCHESNE HIGH SCHOOL
Gather your friends for one last party before hitting the
books! Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 are invited to
Duchesne's annual Back to School Mixer on Friday, Aug.
24. Doors open at 6:30, and the mixer will take place from
7 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is just $5 at the door, but you'll
want to bring a few extra dollars for snacks. Attendance is
limited, so be sure to get there on time! (Don't worry,

Again, the purpose of putting these photos in our Sunday bulletin is to help us all familiarize ourselves with these new
members so that we can give them a warm welcome when we meet them. By welcoming them, we strengthen our
