Mission Statement
We, the community of St. James, are a prayerful and
Eucharistic people who treasure our Catholic
traditions. We strive to grow in our faith by being
good stewards of the gifts God has given us
and by sharing God’s truth with all.
As the Body of Christ, we are called to love and serve
everyone, especially the marginalized,
with joy and hospitality.
Did you Know? (This is a repeat of last week.)
It is that time of year again, when we ask all of our Groups/
Ministry Heads to please send Daryl in our parish office
your upcoming schedules for any events held in our St.
James Facility. This includes those who have already been
using the facility, as our calendar runs from July thru June,
hence we start over; none of the events are automatically
carried over from one year to the other. Please email your
ministry or Scout events to Daryl @ parsec@kc.rr.com. In
order to get the rooms scheduled as soon as possible.
Thank you.
We remind you it is our Policy (due to liability) in
accordance with the diocese that nothing can be held in
our facility without this event/ meeting being scheduled
through the Parish Office and shown on our
Critical Dates Calendar.
— Jim Newell; Operations Manager
“PLEASE”
We ask that every parishioner or visitor to St. James
observe the red curb in front of the Church, school and
parish office. Under no circumstances should a car be
parked in these areas. We limit access to all the buildings
by emergency vehicles when we violate this law, jeopardizing
all occupants. Thanks for assisting us in making St.
James a safer place to worship and attend school and visit
fellow parishioners. — Jim Newell
Holy Body and Blood of Christ Sunday Page 3 June 26, 2011
From the Pastor’s Pen
It is interesting to watch the young children who have not
yet made his or her First Communion come forward in the
communion line. Most of the children have learned to cross
their hands and arms to request a blessing. Every once in
awhile, one of the youngster will say, “Hey where is mine?”
And the mom or dad will will shhhh them and move on.
Although they may not know exactly what it is, they know
they want it or at least they don't want to be left out. When
we prepare our young people for First Communion, one of
the questions we ask is, “What do we believe about the
bread and wine? What does it become? Does it still look like
bread? Does it still taste like bread?” One response was, “It
doesn't look like any bread I've ever eaten.” As a wafer, it is
challenging sometimes to know that it is bread, albeit
unleavened bread.
As we receive today the Body and Blood today, as we
say our AMEN! not only do we recognize the presence of
Christ in the Eucharistic, we also recognize the Body and
Blood of Christ within us. For we ARE the Body and Blood of
Christ. We are the living witness and sign of His presence in
the world. So when that young child says, “Hey! Where's
mine?” she's challenging us to be present to her as well.
How often do we gather around a table as a family for a
meal? Who sits at our table with us? Who is invited? Who is
excluded? Are there any family members who don't feel
welcome? Recently my mom and sister moved into a new
house. It is a smaller house with a decent size kitchen and
living room, but a small dining room. The kitchen sink has a
breakfast nook around it with tall stools. Mom did not have
room for the large dining room table, so she decided to just
eat meals at the counter. Well, that lasted only a couple of
months when she decided she wanted, NO NEEDED at table
to sit at. So she rearranged and found a small table to fit the
space. How great it is to once again sit at table, share a
meal and share family stories.
May we always have a table to sit at, to be fed and
nourished and to share the stories. —- Fr. Timothy
Someone is Watching and Wondering
Today, we once again celebrate the
Solemnity of the Body and Blood of
Christ (Corpus Christi). This feast
originated in the diocese of Liège,
France , and was based on the reve
lations of a French nun Juliana of
Mont Cornillon (1192-1258). Juliana
was orphaned at age five, and
placed in the care of the nuns of
Mount Cornillon. She experienced
visions, while she was still young,
in which the Lord pointed out
that there was no feast in honor
of the Blessed Sacrament. As a
nun, and later prioress, she began
to speak out for such a feast.
Although she received support, the
opposition drove her from the
monastery and accused her of
mismanaging funds of a hospital under her control. Following
an inquiry, she was exonerated by the bishop, who in
1246 introduced the feast of Corpus Christi in Liège. Following
the bishops death, Juliana was again driven from the
monastery, and found refuge at the Cistercian monastery of
Salzinnes. That monastery was burned during a siege by
Henry II of Luxembourg, so she retired to Fossess for the
remainder of her life. Following her death, the struggle for
the establishment of the feast of Corpus Christi was continued
by her friend BL. Eva of Liège, until its universal promulgation
by Pope Urban IV in 1264. From its inception it was
a feast celebrating both the body and blood of Jesus,
highlighting the redemptive effects of the sacrament.
As we celebrate this feast I might suggest a re-reading of
Heb 9:12 and 22-24 as a reminder that Jesus shed his blood
for all humankind, for the forgiveness of sin; he made expiation
for our sins (Rom 3:25), he cleansed us (Heb 9:14, 1
John 1:7), purified and delivered us (1 Pet 1:2), sanctified us
(Heb 13:12), and justified us (Rom 5:9). The Church has
given a Eucharistic meaning to the words Jesus said at the
Last Supper, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new
covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20). By virtue of our baptism,
we share in the blood of Christ, and therefore, in His
life through the Eucharistic cup. We are called to share Jesus’
words with the world. This gives me a lot to contemplate,
especially today as we celebrate the feast of The
Body and Blood of Christ. Your sister in Christ, Sandy Gagnon

Doors to Discovery
What feelings do you feel as you stand in front of
an unfamiliar door? Curiosity? Apprehension?
Excitement?
Not only will the children in kindergarten feel all
these emotions on their "first day of school", they
will also experience them throughout the school
year as we open several new "doors" while learning
in the classroom. Our theme for the year is
"Doors to Discovery". Over the next 9 months,
the kindergartners will investigate behind Our
Own Doors, the Barn Door, the Cupboard Door,
the Workshop Door, the Garden Gate.
Behind our Own Doors, we will meet all our
new friends. We will discover new things about
our classmates, their families and our new
school! While studying behind the “Big Barn
Door”, we will investigate the seasons and the
weather, baby farm animals and their parents and
how food is produced. We will visit The Red Barn
Farm in Weston, MO, as well as Shatto Dairy
Farm, in Osborn, MO. This will lead us right into
our next door, “The
Cupboard Door”, where after taking a study trip to
our local Hy-Vee, we will transform our classroom
into our very own grocery store. We will learn
about food groups, nutrition, and how to make
healthy choices. All the knowledge we gain behind
this door will be culminated with a Family
Feast Night, in which the children plan the entire
meal, help prepare the meal and décor and even
provide the entertainment! “The Workshop
Door” will lead us into an intense study of those
famous builders; The Three Little Pigs. The importance
of shelter, building materials, the stages
of building houses, measuring and different types
of tools will be discovered. The tradition of constructing
our very own kindergarten classroom
playhouse will give the opportunity to apply the
knowledge we gain while behind this door. We
will finish our year
behind “The Garden Gate”, planting and digging
in God’s soil, and discussing the importance of
each one of God’s living creatures to our planet
earth. We will observe as the moon seems to
change shape in the night sky and use all these
beautiful creations to inspire our artwork and literature.
As they close the door on Kindergarten, the
children will feel a sense of accomplishment,
pride, and prepared for the First Grade doors
ahead of them.
Our Faith In Action
Stewardship Meditation: Among the compelling
Eucharistic themes proclaimed in today’s readings is
the notion of “participation” as found in Saint Paul’s
letter to the Corinthians. Good stewards are part of a
Eucharistic family: loving, welcoming, serving. An important
part of living as a steward comes about in the
many ways we can participate in the life of the Church.
No matter how much time we have to give, no matter
what our skills or interests, no matter what our level of
commitment, there is a way to participate as a good
steward to enrich our lives, and build up the Body of
Christ.
