From the Pastor’s Pen
Happy Fourth of July! As we celebrate this great day of
our history, may we as citizens of the United States of America,
cherish always in our hearts the gift of freedom we enjoy. May
our celebrations with fireworks show the excitement we cherish
in our hearts. May we always remember in our thoughts and
prayers those who have fought and continue to fight to ensure
our freedom and peace in this world. May God bless the USA.
July is Precious Blood month. By tradition, the Catholic
Church dedicates each month of the year to a certain devotion.
In July, it is the Precious Blood of Jesus. The Feast of the
Precious Blood, established by Pope Pius IX in 1849, is
celebrated each year on the first Sunday of July. As Precious
Blood people, July holds a special place in each of our hearts.
Our Precious Blood community gathers each year for a special
celebration in honor of the Feast of the Precious Blood on July
1st. We celebrate and remember our history and our role in the
church. One of our many charismas we draw upon is the
redeeming power of the blood, namely reconciliation. We are
all aware of the issues that face us in the church and our daily
lives. There are times when we need to seek forgiveness and
there are times when we need to be ministers of forgiveness.
But reconciliation is more than just saying “I’m sorry.” It is also
working towards rebuilding relationships. It is working to
provide a safe space where a person can speak of his or her
loses or injuries or hurts in order to be reconciled and healed.
In our lives, where are we broken and hurting and need to be
healed? Or, do we need to be a person of listening and compassion
so that someone else may be healed? God listens to
the cry of the blood, where are we calling out in our hurts?
Where are the people around us crying out in need of healing?
Last Sunday, as a parish we celebrated with Fr. Tom and
said farewell as he leaves to begin the next chapter in his life.
As one door has closed, another has opened as we welcome
Fr. Mike Mulhearn. He will be joining us on staff and be with us
till the end of the year. Watch for more info about Fr. Mike in
next week’s bulletin.
We celebrate our independence and our freedom with loud
bangs and booms. We celebrate our faith with prayer. Is our
prayer today loud enough for others to hear it and take notice?
I hope and pray it is. — Fr. Timothy
As a people of faith, we share with one another the peace of Christ.
Let us continue to pray for those who serve our Country and for our Leaders.
Jesus said, “Peace be with You” as He sent His disciples out to share His Word.
On this Independence Day let us share in that gift of Peace as we honor
those who give and have given their lives in loving
service to Our Country and to Our World. Thank you!
NEW TO THE PARISH ?
Someone is Watching and Wondering
As many of you know, I am not a
As you vacation
Did you know of the website
to show you the Mass times throughout
the country? Go to:
www.masstimes.org to check.
with its hot, humid summers.
The primary reason I chose
to stay in Missouri is due
to family and friends who
live in the area.
Another reason is I truly
enjoy the changing seasons; spring with the new life and
beautiful flowers, fall with the color of bright leaves and the
cool, brisk air, winter’s snow, and summer with all the interesting
creatures that seem to magically appear every year.
One such creature is the firefly. Such a small, rather insignificant
creature, unique to the Midwest, yet one that can
change the dark night into a mesmerizing wonderland.
A few weeks ago Gene and I returned home, around
11:00 pm, from the Franciscan Prayer Center and our time
of Adoration with the Blessed Sacrament. When we got out
of our car, we noticed the clear, star-studded sky. As we
walked around the house, toward our door we stopped in
amazement. The woods around our home were full of
blinking lights. They seemed brighter and bigger than
either of us remembered, yet there they were, the fireflies.
They were thousands of them, and their brightness seemed
to be lighting our way, welcoming us home. We both
paused to experience and enjoy the sight.
Sometime later, when I was reading the eighth chapter
of John’s Gospel, the vision of fireflies from that night came
to mind. As I read Jesus’ words, “I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have
the light of life,” I thought about His call to me to share His
light with the world. As a baptized Christian, I have the
sacred responsibility to take Christ’s light to every part of
the world through which I pass, to every person I encounter,
and to every situation in which I find myself. Sometimes I
feel so overwhelmed, and helpless seeing so much suffering
in the world. How can I make a difference? Then I was
reminded of the firefly. Alone, a single firefly does not emit
very much light. However, when there are many fireflies
together, it seems like the entire landscape is bright with
their glow. No, alone I cannot make much difference, but
with God’s love, Jesus’ words,, and strength from the Holy
Spirit, the light of Christ shines bright within me. When I
combine my life, with each of you, the community of believers,
members of the Body of Christ, we can make a difference.
We can shine Christ’s light into the darkest corners
of people’s lives. We can reach out in unselfish love and
service, and suddenly, His light is shinning brightly over the
world. Like the child catching fireflies in a jar to serve as
her lantern, lets catch God’s light and let it lead us on our
journey to Him. Your sister in Christ, Sandy Gagnon

St. James School News
The Middle School Communication
Arts Department
had a fantastic school year!
Our students continued to
read books in class and on
their own that put them on the
college bound track. They
practiced writing strategies daily that allowed
them to journal, construct essays, research information,
and present reports and projects to
their class. They also focused on comprehension
tests on individual and group reading, including
Accelerated Reader and STAR tests.
All three grades complete different genres of
writing throughout the school year. They complete
a book report each month (these include
written, oral, and various projects). Our sixth
grade work on paragraph and essay writing.
Our seventh grade focuses on persuasive writing.
The eighth grade dedicates fourth quarter
to a research paper written in correct MLA style.
This will help prepare them for the many reports
they will complete in high school and college.
Our entire middle school participates in pen pal
writing with members of our parish that belong
to our Over Fifty Club.
We are especially proud to
share that by the end of middle
school, our students will complete
nine novels as a class.
Two of these novels are on the
college-bound reading list.
They will have also read one
book a month independently
from our middle school list for a book report.
Twelve books from our list also appear on the
college-bound list. Our seventh grade will be
busy this summer completing book report opportunities
and our eighth grade will be really
busy completing required reading for a leadership
essay to begin their last year with us at St.
James.
Our Faith In Action
July Steward of the Month is
years. They have three boys, Austin (9), Alex (4),
who attend St. James School, and Cooper (3).
They have been members of St. James for six
years.
Jeff went through RCIA at St. James. Jeff is the
HOPE Card director. he served three years as PTO
Treasurer for the school. Jeff is on the St. James
Development Committee, and was the 3rd Grade
Boys basketball coach last year. Jeff is one of the
founding members of Do-Dad’s Group at St. James
which has several projects planned to help around
the Parish.
Jeff is most of all passionate about his family. “I
am passionate about raising my children in a good
community, showing them the benefits physically
and spiritually, for our family and the community by
being involved and willing to lend a helping hand.”
The community of St. James thanks Jeff for sharing
his many gifts with us.
Dear Frs. Timothy and Tom, and
