PUBLIC COMMENT<br />

Dr. Ned Doffoney, Chancellor of the North Orange County Community College District, introduced Mr.<br />

Tony Ontiveros, a member of the NOCCD <strong>Board</strong> of Trustees who spoke briefly regarding the valuable<br />

partnership between the NOCCD and the PYLUSD, indicating that he represents our district on the<br />

<strong>Board</strong>.<br />

STUDENT BOARD REPORT<br />

Student <strong>Board</strong> Representative Chad Fixa provided a brief report of the activities and events occurring<br />

at the district’s high schools.<br />

The <strong>Board</strong> recognized Chad for his tenure on the <strong>Board</strong> of Education as the Student <strong>Board</strong><br />

Representative.<br />

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT<br />

• Mr. Richard McAlindin, Director of Executive Services, shared briefly regarding the ongoing process<br />

to establish a new strategic plan for the District and provided a packet of information to <strong>Board</strong><br />

members for their review in preparation for the <strong>Board</strong> Study Session on February 14, <strong>2013</strong>.<br />

• Mrs. Jayne Christakos, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, indicated that although the<br />

Governor has released the <strong>2013</strong>-2014 State budget proposal, we must await further analysis of the<br />

budget to know the impact on the District.<br />

COMMUNICATIONS<br />

Registration information relative to CSBA <strong>Board</strong> Presidents Workshop on The Brown Act<br />

BOARD REPORT<br />

1. Mrs. Karin Freeman attended the CTE (Career Technology Education) Academy Night for the<br />

district’s comprehensive high schools which was very well attended. She commended staff for<br />

their efforts in providing such valuable information to students and their parents. Mrs. Freeman<br />

commented on information provided in a recent <strong>Board</strong> Update relative to school safety (i.e., a<br />

uniform shirt identifying campus supervisors districtwide) and looks forward to hearing more.

BOARD REPORT, Continued<br />

2. Mrs. Judi Carmona attended the graduation ceremony for the Adult Transition Class at Esperanza<br />

High School, the Constitution Bowl at Kraemer Middle School, visited the Manufacturing and<br />

Engineering class at Esperanza High School, and attended music breakfasts at El Dorado and<br />

Valencia High Schools. She was pleased to have the opportunity to visit the training provided to<br />

Preppy K teachers by the Center for Creativity and Critical Thinking in Schools at Travis Ranch<br />

School and also attended the CSEA Installation of Officers event with Dr. Domene and Mr. Kent.<br />

Mrs. Carmona plans several more school visitations this month as well as a trip to Disneyland to<br />

hear Kraemer Middle School’s band and choir perform.<br />

3. Mr. Eric Padget wished everyone a happy new year. He was pleased to have attended various<br />

concerts and sporting events across the district during the month of December and found the CTE<br />

Academy Night very enjoyable. Mr. Padget expressed appreciation to staff who responded<br />

admirably to a medical emergency at a school site this past week. Although it was a difficult<br />

situation, staff stepped up and initiated the needed procedures. He is so grateful for the AEDs<br />

that have been placed at all district school sites and for the emergency response training staff has<br />

been provided.<br />

4. Mrs. Carrie Buck visited Valencia High School and Sierra Vista Elementary School prior to winter<br />

break, and will be visiting Wagner Elementary School. With regard to her visit at Sierra Vista<br />

Elementary School, Mrs. Buck mentioned in particular the school’s new practice of having the<br />

students take recess prior to eating their lunch. Staff at the school report this has been very<br />

successful as students now sit longer to eat their lunch, eat more of their lunch, and are ready to<br />

learn when they return to their classrooms. Mrs. Buck indicated she was pleased to have the<br />

opportunity to talk to Mrs. Sunshine Cavaluzzi’s AP Government class at El Dorado High School<br />

relative to her role as a member of the <strong>Board</strong> of Education and shared briefly regarding the class<br />

discussion.<br />

5. Mrs. Carol Downey found various holiday concerts at district schools very enjoyable and added<br />

that it is always a pleasure to hear students perform. She was also pleased to have attended the<br />

Constitution Bowl at Kraemer Middle School.<br />
