PUBLIC COMMENT 

Dr. Ned Doffoney, Chancellor of the North Orange County Community College District, introduced Mr. 

Tony Ontiveros, a member of the NOCCD Board of Trustees who spoke briefly regarding the valuable 

partnership between the NOCCD and the PYLUSD, indicating that he represents our district on the 

Board. 

STUDENT BOARD REPORT 

Student Board Representative Chad Fixa provided a brief report of the activities and events occurring 

at the district’s high schools. 

The Board recognized Chad for his tenure on the Board of Education as the Student Board 

Representative. 

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT 

• Mr. Richard McAlindin, Director of Executive Services, shared briefly regarding the ongoing process 

to establish a new strategic plan for the District and provided a packet of information to Board 

members for their review in preparation for the Board Study Session on February 14, 2013. 

• Mrs. Jayne Christakos, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, indicated that although the 

Governor has released the 2013-2014 State budget proposal, we must await further analysis of the 

budget to know the impact on the District.

COMMUNICATIONS 

Registration information relative to CSBA Board Presidents Workshop on The Brown Act 

BOARD REPORT 

1. Mrs. Karin Freeman attended the CTE (Career Technology Education) Academy Night for the 

district’s comprehensive high schools which was very well attended. She commended staff for 

their efforts in providing such valuable information to students and their parents. Mrs. Freeman 

commented on information provided in a recent Board Update relative to school safety (i.e., a 

uniform shirt identifying campus supervisors districtwide) and looks forward to hearing more.


BOARD REPORT, Continued 

2. Mrs. Judi Carmona attended the graduation ceremony for the Adult Transition Class at Esperanza 

High School, the Constitution Bowl at Kraemer Middle School, visited the Manufacturing and 

Engineering class at Esperanza High School, and attended music breakfasts at El Dorado and 

Valencia High Schools. She was pleased to have the opportunity to visit the training provided to 

Preppy K teachers by the Center for Creativity and Critical Thinking in Schools at Travis Ranch 

School and also attended the CSEA Installation of Officers event with Dr. Domene and Mr. Kent. 

Mrs. Carmona plans several more school visitations this month as well as a trip to Disneyland to 

hear Kraemer Middle School’s band and choir perform. 

3. Mr. Eric Padget wished everyone a happy new year. He was pleased to have attended various 

concerts and sporting events across the district during the month of December and found the CTE 

Academy Night very enjoyable. Mr. Padget expressed appreciation to staff who responded 

admirably to a medical emergency at a school site this past week. Although it was a difficult 

situation, staff stepped up and initiated the needed procedures. He is so grateful for the AEDs 

that have been placed at all district school sites and for the emergency response training staff has 

been provided. 

4. Mrs. Carrie Buck visited Valencia High School and Sierra Vista Elementary School prior to winter 

break, and will be visiting Wagner Elementary School. With regard to her visit at Sierra Vista 

Elementary School, Mrs. Buck mentioned in particular the school’s new practice of having the 

students take recess prior to eating their lunch. Staff at the school report this has been very 

successful as students now sit longer to eat their lunch, eat more of their lunch, and are ready to 

learn when they return to their classrooms. Mrs. Buck indicated she was pleased to have the 

opportunity to talk to Mrs. Sunshine Cavaluzzi’s AP Government class at El Dorado High School 

relative to her role as a member of the Board of Education and shared briefly regarding the class 

discussion. 

5. Mrs. Carol Downey found various holiday concerts at district schools very enjoyable and added 

that it is always a pleasure to hear students perform. She was also pleased to have attended the 

Constitution Bowl at Kraemer Middle School.

Classified School Employees’ Week 

WHEREAS, classified school employees are extraordinary workers who provide essential 

services and contribute to the everyday operations of our schools; and 

WHEREAS, classified school employees are often the first faces who greet visitors to our 

school district; and 

WHEREAS, classified staff are caring employees--many of whom work and live in our 

community; and 

WHEREAS, classified employees are hardworking, dedicated professionals, many of whom are 

often “behind the scenes” keeping our operations running smoothly; and 

WHEREAS, classified employees are extraordinary individuals who strive for excellence and 

are important members of our PYLUSD team; 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District 

Board of Education designates the week of May 19-25, 2013 as Classified School Employees’ Week. 

The Board encourages the community to thank each and every one of our classified employees for 

being extraordinary workers who provide essential work and make the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified 

School District an enjoyable place to go to school.

California Day of the Teacher Proclamation 

WHEREAS, California’s teachers are among the best educated, most credentialed and hardestworking 

educators in the country; and 

WHEREAS, the prosperity of our state and our nation is determined by the skills and abilities of 

the next generation; and 

WHEREAS, our students depend on educators to guide them on the road to success; and 

WHEREAS, the innovation, creativity, and problem-solving skills needed to maintain California’s 

leading edge derives from the quality of its teachers; and 

WHEREAS, teacher quality depends on a citizenry that values education and provides the 

resources needed to support it; and 

WHEREAS, good teaching grows in value and pays dividends far beyond the classroom. 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District 

Board of Education designates May 9, 2013 as California Day of the Teacher. The Board encourages 

all students, parents, and school district employees to participate in celebrations that express and show 

appreciation to the amazing teachers throughout the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.
