Nurture staff Improve staff morale and encourage employee wellness Teacher Induction Program Over 50 permanent new teachers joined Rainbow District School Board when classes began on September 6, 2005. They received special support during their first year in the profession as participants in the Teacher Induction Program launched by the Board. The Teacher Induction Program was created to help new teachers make a successful transition into the profession. Pairing new teachers with experienced teachers as mentors throughout the year was a key component of the program. The Teacher Induction Program helps the Board to attract, support and retain a highly competent teaching staff. It also helps to improve teaching practices among new and experienced teachers. This has a direct impact on student learning in Rainbow Schools. In addition to mentoring, the Teacher Induction Program includes a series of workshops on topics such as effective planning, classroom management, and organization. New teachers receive a binder with resource information. They also meet with their mentors throughout the year, for job shadowing, coaching and planning. Board welcomes new employees New employees participated in an Employee Orientation Session at the beginning of the school year. They had an opportunity to meet the senior leadership team and get firsthand information about Board policies and procedures. Board awards Employees were invited to nominate their peers for Board awards, a rich tradition in Rainbow Schools. Four awards are presented annually – Awards for Excellence, Awards for Outstanding Contribution to the Co- Curricular Program, the Barbara Konarek Memorial Award and the William N. Roman Teacher of the Year Award. Rainbow Schools and You Newsletter Each issue of Rainbow Schools and You celebrated the work of staff in all areas, in schools and in the community. Board employees, through their individual and collective efforts, contributed to the Board’s mission of providing quality programs and character education to enable students to maximize their potential and fulfill their aspirations. Their energy and enthusiasm was captured in the many success stories in Rainbow Schools and You. Innovation Fund An Innovation Fund was established in the 2004-2005 budget to foster best practices and inspire new creative ideas for programming for students in Rainbow Schools. Response to the Innovation Fund in its inaugural year was outstanding. A total of 55 Innovation Fund projects were submitted for consideration. The Innovation Fund gave employees an opportunity to share their ideas for continuous improvement. Innovation Fund Projects • Mathematics Lighthouse Class • Business Certificate Program at Sudbury Secondary School • Tele-robotics initiative at Lockerby Composite School • First Nations Liaison Project at Little Current Public School • Police Mkwa Opportunity Circle • Advanced Placement Program at Espanola High School • Pay it Forward character education program at MacLeod Public School • Autism Spectrum Disorder videotaping project for successful practices • Technological Skills Competition • Installation of FM hearing systems • Environmental Conference at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School Presentations at Board meetings Throughout the 2004- 2005 school year, various employees were invited to attend Board meetings to provide progress reports on their respective Innovation Fund projects. Awards were also presented on behalf of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association.
