Maintain quality facilities Capital projects The Board invested approximately $3.8 million in capital projects in 2004-2005. The original windows were replaced at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School. A new plumbing system was installed at Lockerby Composite School. These upgrades will result in substantial energy savings. The exterior of Confederation Secondary School was refaced. In addition, roofing was completed at Lockerby Composite School, Cyril Varney Public School, S. Geiger Public School and Levack Public School. Under the first phase of the Province’s Good Places to Learn Initiative, Rainbow District School Board received approval to obtain $11.2 million in Ministry financing for capital projects to be undertaken in the 2005-2006 school year. Ontario Disabilities Act The Rainbow District School Board continued to make its schools accessible. The elevator was upgraded at Manitoulin Secondary School. Washroom renovations were completed at Pinecrest Public School, Val Caron Public School, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, and Jessie Hamilton Public School. A ramp was also installed at Val Caron Public School. Boundaries review The Board announced that there would be no school closures in the 2005-2006 school year. However, a committee was established to look at school boundaries in two areas - Warren Public School/ Markstay Public School and Monetville Public School/Wanup Public School. Effective September 2005, Grades 4, 5 and 6 students living in the Warren Public School jurisdiction attended Focus on sustainability Dearness Conservation Teachers and students from Rainbow Schools participated in a series of workshops presented by Dearness Conservation, with funding support from Union Gas. The program is self-financing through utility savings and waste reduction. It involves the whole school community - administrators, caretakers, teachers and students - who all learn together how to adopt a conservation ethic in their schools and take leadership in transferring this learning to their homes and communities. Energy savings Student-run activities such as turning off lights and computers, closing taps and making garbageless lunches are saving energy, water and reducing waste in the entire school community. The Board achieved approximately $120,000 in savings in utilities in 2004- 2005 through a number of initiatives including the installation of a new boiler at Lively District Secondary School and Alexander Public School, new windows at Lockerby Composite School and Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, the cleaning of radiation heat units, and the retrofitting of lights at Espanola High School, Lockerby Composite School and Lasalle Secondary School. Savings are also being achieved by maximizing the use of technology. A state-of-the-art mechanical system was installed at Lockerby Composite School. Automation systems were installed at Chelmsford Valley District Composite School, Espanola High School and Manitoulin Secondary School. Transforming school grounds Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School hosted a full-day workshop for students and teachers in Rainbow Schools on the benefits of naturalization and re-greening in May 2005. Under the guidance of Ann Coffey, Co-ordinator of School Planning for the Canadian Biodiversity Markstay Public School. Effective September 2005, new registrants living south of the Highway 69/64 junction and east on Highway 64 to Leger Road were given the choice of attending Monetville Public School or Wanup Public School. Effective September 2006, a boundary will be established based upon the choice of the majority of new registrants in 2005. Accommodation Review The Rainbow District School Board indicated that it will conduct a comprehensive accommodation review in 2005-2006 including space for children in day care and before/after school programs. Rainbow District School Board supports high quality early learning environments. A detailed fiveyear accommodation review began in 2004-2005 in keeping with Ministry of Education requirements. Institute and Environmental Advisor for the City of Ottawa, participants learned how to transform school grounds into nurturing, healthy spaces. The workshop was a Rainbow District School Board Innovation Fund Initiative supported by Inco and the Canadian Biodiversity Institute. Some elementary schools embarked on significant school ground transformation projects with support from the community, including Jessie Hamilton Public School and C.R. Judd Public School.
