Literacy and
Numeracy Initiative
Kindergarten to Grade 6
The literacy and numeracy initiative,
which is part of the Ministry’s Education
Foundations program, entered its
second year in 2004 – 2005. The
goal of the Education Foundations
program is to improve the achievement
of Kindergarten to Grade 6 students
in the areas of reading, writing and
mathematics.
“The supports provided under
these initiatives are based on research
that points to two key factors in
improving the achievement levels of
students: developing teacher expertise
in effective instruction, and developing
and implementing clear improvement
plans.” (The Guide to Effective Instruction
in Mathematics 2004)
In 2004-2005, the mathematics
component of the initiative focused on
primary geometry and spatial sense. The
literacy component focused on primary
writing and assessment.
Student Success Initiative
Grades 7 to 12
The Student Success Initiative,
a priority in Ontario schools,
entered its second year in
2004-2005. The goal of the
Student Success Initiative is to
inspire success for all students
regardless of which pathway
they choose.
The Student Success
Initiative has a foundation
built on discovering and
improving the individual
strengths of each person. Every person
has strengths and talents, and if we can
focus on success for each student we will
be able to help students to see the value
of staying in school.
Work continued in 2004-2005
on implementing the three pillars of
the Student Success Initiative - literacy,
mathematical literacy, and program
pathways (independent living, work,
apprenticeship, college, university).
A fourth pillar, community, culture,
and caring, was introduced in the spring
of 2005.
