High school student Sadie is a quiet and artistic teenager who<br />
has just been rejected by her best friend in favour of the incrowd.<br />
She plans to study photography at college but lacks<br />
inspiration or individuality. Everything changes when she meets<br />
the rebellious and self-assured Nico. Equally an outsider, Nico<br />
suffers from a genetic defect which forces her to walk with a<br />
crutch, but rather than being held back by her disability she<br />
seems to relish her differences.<br />
Nico’s lifestyle and attitudes have a huge influence on Sadie as<br />
she is introduced to Mod culture: fashion, European cinema and<br />
vintage scooters. Sadie finds a sense of identity and a muse for<br />
her artistic work and begins a transformation from shy teenage<br />
tomboy to stylish and confident young adult. Things soon get<br />
complicated though, as a love triangle develops between the two<br />
girls and Nico’s boyfriend Tregg. Director Cassidy subtly builds<br />
the sexual tension and Sadie’s exact feelings for Nico remain<br />
unclear to the audience throughout most of the film, as they are<br />
probably unclear to her.<br />
This perfectly cast coming of age story boasts a great<br />
soundtrack and has the kind of visual flair and striking images<br />
which should make it a shoe-in for cult status. SE<br />
