Paul, a young art student from Mexico is now living in Los
Angeles. He’s still on the rebound from the collapse of his
relationship with Mariana when he meets the statuesque
Canadian, Sofi, who is in town on a visit from Vancouver. After
their first meeting they fall in love and as Sofi returns back
home, their long distance romance begins. This pared-down love
story is told in a series of intimate vignettes ranging from the
conversational to the sexually intimate.
The first problem to emerge in their relationship is one of
geography as Paul is firmly LA based while Sofi is not prepared
to uproot herself from Vancouver. The pair struggle hard to
maintain their early passion via calls and infrequent meetings
but before long their initial lust has turned to ennui - on the part
of Sofi at least, while the ever-needy Paul struggles to retain
a foothold in her life as he attempts to come to terms with his
myriad of insecurities.
Mexican director, Rafael Palacio Illingworth plays Paul, while
the stunning Canadian newcomer, Jolene Andersen shines as
Sofi. An intimate portrayal of the various stages in a relationship,
this is a debut feature from Illingworth who also has a short in the
Venice film festival this year. SB
