This year’s out of the blue discovery, Donoma is the work of a
Paris based collective led by writer/director Djinn Carrenard.
Following on the recent trend that marked the successes of Etre
et Avoir and Palme d’Or winning The Class, Donoma takes a
fresh perspective on what it feels like to be a young kid from the
‘banlieux de Paris’.
Merging several different storylines based around the
classroom, Dacio is introduced as the disruptive and vulgar
lycée student. When his Spanish teacher Ana corners him after
a lesson and tosses him off, he starts to become increasingly
infatuated with her, something she uses to repeatedly humiliate
and intimidate him. Dacio’s atheist girlfriend is oblivious to his
obsession, and distracted looking after her older leukaemiasuffering
sister. In this alternative vignette, she begins to question
a number of unusual elements within her life. Their friend
meanwhile, has just offered herself to a stranger, in an attempt
to see whether love can be born from a single sexual encounter.
The beauty of Donoma is difficult to contextualise. On one
hand it’s a blindingly simple observation of suburban Paris, but
on the other, it’s a Lynchian discovery movie so natural you’d think
yourself in the room. XR
