THE STORY OF MY SPACE [VIDRIMASGOR]
WEDNESDAY 6 OCTOBER AT 3:45PM
After the funeral of Clara’s grandmother the kitchen window in
her shared flat suddenly shatters. Replaced with what appears to
be an enchanted piece of glass, the grey concrete yard seen out
of the kitchen window suddenly transforms into a space unique to
each who looks upon it.
This optimistic comedy, the debut feature of Yana Polyarush,
follows the seemingly innocuous lives of the flatmates and their
transformations as they try to understand why their window
shows them such views. Clara sees a glimpse of her recently
deceased grandmother on a beach, Malakhitov, a fortnight of
evening opera performances, and photographer Grisha’s view
shows a venture into the cherry blossoms of Japan. As the flatmates
struggle to work out whether the laws of physics have
changed or they have gone collectively insane, the film gently
explores the relationships between these endearingly eccentric
characters. Between this character study and some beautifully
striking images first-time director Polyarush has started a
career that is sure to be followed. Vidrimasgor is a diverting and
entertaining movie with a refreshing modern and Russian twist
on the fairy tale concept of a journey inside oneself. LC
