THE TOLL
SATURDAY 9 OCTOBER AT 11:45AM
Still living at home with his mum, Steve is a healthcare
professional who entertains dying patients. Left a book by a dead
patient, inside the cover is a hand drawn map that shows where
his savings are hidden in a town in Western Australia. Steve
heads out on a treasure hunt with his best friend Nick under the
pretence of a ‘fishing trip’.
When they reach their destination, a small field, they dig up
a chest of cash, but venturing back into the forest they face a
difficult challenge ahead. No matter what they try to do, they
can’t seem to find the exit and keep reaching the same spot
they earlier dug up. Struggling without a phone signal, and
without anybody knowing their whereabouts, their friendship and
durability is tested to the limit.
An entertaining, part coming of age, part psychological drama,
The Toll is supported by stellar performances by Steve McCall
and Nick Britton, who offer a sense of authenticity, and vibrant
resilience on their trip into the wilderness. The soundtrack of
electronic instrumentals sets up the atmosphere of the journey
well, and the eerie confusion it creates complements the plot
fantastically. JB
