16 ART & ABOUT VALLEY OF THE ARTS by Lon Michels and Todd Olsen I always say the greatest artist of all is God, Higher Power, or if you wish, the Universe. We find the best things are in our own back yards. For us, in the greater Palm Springs area, and “Valley Of The Arts”, our back yard is magical beautiful mountains! We took an overnight to Big Bear Village, just one hour from our home here in Palm Springs. On the way, we drove the ‘back way’ up to Big Bear through Yucca Valley, up the mountains on the north end, to the valley of the bears! Since we had never been there before, we were just amazed at a beautiful serene lake with an altitude of over 7000’ above sea level. Where mountains and lakes come together, the artistry of this magical planet create beauty beyond compare! The huge bonus of taking a short excursion this time of year is not only do we escape the dry heat of the desert, but we experience a mountain Springtime. The green of Springtime is known all to well for folks from the Midwest, and the flowers that accompany this most vibrant Spring green are an incredible explosion of color. Our stay was super affordable, just $62 per night at the Big Bear Frontier resort, complete with pool, spa, and the cutest room with a fireplace. Art galleries are open and ready for you to come and explore not only local artists, but world class masters who live right here in our “Valley Of The Arts”. Heather James Gallery has the works of old masters on exhibit, that will take your breath away. Please tell our dear friend Sam you heard about Heather James Gallery located in Palm Desert from “Art and About by Lon and Todd” in LIVE Magazine, and say hello for us. At Heather James Gallery you can view everything from Andy Warhol, to Picasso, right there for you to enjoy. In the meantime, please keep hydrated, and cool, either in the pool, movie house, a gallery or the museum. The best refreshment for us is sparkling water with a little Pom juice, ( pomegranate juice) ,for flavor and color. This refreshing beverage also helps to kill cancer cells according to Dr. OZ on TV. One last tip to beat the heat, we love to people watch. We also love frozen yogurt. When you mix people watching with delicious frozen yogurt you get Eddie’s Frozen Yogurt, on Arenas Road, next to Hunters. Not only do you get to taste the sweet but you get to see it too, eye candy never looked so refreshing! Downtown Big Bear is adorable with great restaurants and shops. There are huge gas open fire pits blazing on the side walks, even in early Summer. Temperatures can be chilly in the morning, where we can see our breath, but afternoon was a perfect 73 degrees. Once again , the downtown was filled with flowers everywhere! We brought our bikes and found the most incredible bike path, 4 miles in length, on North side of lake, titled “Peddle Path”, which was also very nice for walking. We had dinner at Captain Anchorage across from Walgreens in downtown Big Bear, and had the best prime rib since we moved to California, 16 oz. You will feel like you are in an old German pub with huge wooden painted beams. The details are superb; bear teeth hanging on chandeliers and an atmosphere reminiscent of a Bavarian movie set. On our trip back home to Palm Springs, we chose to come back on Hwy 18 down the ‘front side of the mountain’. To our surprise and delight this was amazing and the closest thing to describe these vistas is driving into Yosemite. We thought that the Big Bear area was named after black and or grizzly bears, but quickly realized that many of the bears we saw had cubs and also have homes in Palm Springs! Truth is that the valley was so proliferated with real grizzlies, that this is how the name really did come to be. Promotion and dedication to promoting the arts, are not only appreciated by artists, galleries, Palm Springs Art Museum and “The Valley Of The Arts”, but a necessity to bring art to the forefront, and apply art to our world, for people of all ages, ethnic, and economic classes to enjoy. Although so many people come to mind in this regard and hard work, one person stands out to us, Angela Romeo. Angela has worked tirelessly to promote the arts.
