Apprenticeship then you won’t have to pay for your training. While
you are training you will also receive a wage or, in some cases, a
training allowance. If you are disabled, you may still qualify for
certain welfare benefits during your training.
There are two kinds of Apprenticeships.
• Foundation Modern Apprenticeships
These programmes are mainly for young people aged 16 to 18
who want to learn while they are in a job. If you are already
employed, you will be paid a wage by your employer, and if
you are on a placement you will receive a training allowance of
at least £50 per week. Successful completion will give you an
NVQ level 2 qualification and the opportunity to move on to a
full Apprenticeship.
• Apprenticeships
These are for people of any age, and lead to an NVQ level 3
qualification. They combine practical on-the-job training with
college learning, and you get paid a wage from your employer.
Apprenticeships normally take three to four years to complete
and can be useful entry qualifications for higher education
courses such as degrees.
(b) Modern Skills Diploma
If you are already in work, you might want to think about a Modern
Skills Diploma. These are aimed at adults (over 25) and give you
extra work-related skills and knowledge. You continue to earn your
normal wage while the scheme pays for off-the-job training to bring
your skills up to NVQ level 4.
(c) Skill Build
