You might find it helpful to arrange a meeting with the college’s
course tutor or careers adviser or a Careers Wales adviser. You
might also want to speak to Learndirect Cymru/Wales who have
information on all the courses available in Wales. See the Useful
Contacts section.
College visits, open days and student ambassadors
It is very important to visit any college you are considering and
meet the disability or ALS adviser. They can tell you about flexible
study methods, equipment available to help you study, accessibility
issues and adjustments the college can make for you. If you are
still at school, ask if a student ambassador from the college can
visit to tell you more about their experiences.
(b) How do I apply to college?
Once you decide which course you would like to take, you can
either ask the college to send you an application form or download
one from their website. You might find it useful to visit the college
after you apply to talk to college staff about the support you might
need when you start the course.
The application form may ask if you have a disability or additional
support needs. You don’t need to fill this in if you don’t want to.
However, if you do the college will be able to meet your needs
more effectively. All the information you give the college about
your disability or support needs will be kept private and will not be
passed on to anyone else unless you give your permission.
It is against the law for colleges to discriminate against you
because you are disabled.
