Training programmes If you are thinking of starting a work-based learning or training programme, either the college or the employer/training provider will be responsible for meeting your support needs, depending on the programme you choose. Contact the individual employer or training provider, your careers adviser at school or college, or Careers Wales for more information. (c) What kind of support is available? School At school, your local authority must make sure you get the support you need. The support you have had up until now should still be available to you, whether you continue studying at the same school or move to a different school. Colleges All colleges have a duty to meet the needs of all disabled students or students with other additional support needs. There are two ways of getting support from your college. • You can either take part in mainstream courses (disabled and non-disabled students studying together), where the college will give you the support you need to succeed on your course. This might include extra teaching if you have dyslexia, an interpreter if you are deaf, flexible timetables, or materials in alternative formats such as Braille or computer software; or • You can take part in courses which are specifically 22
designed for students with learning difficulties or students who have complex needs. These programmes have fewer students than a mainstream class and all the students on the course will need additional support to help their learning. This might include Skills for Life courses to develop your maths, reading and writing skills, or Independent Living Skills courses which prepare you for adult life. Disability or Additional Learning Support advisers at colleges arrange disability support within the college. You should contact them to discuss your individual support needs before you start your course. Specialist colleges These colleges provide further education for disabled people only. Some specialist colleges cater for all disabled students, while others are mainly for students with a particular impairment. Specialist colleges may give you the kind of equipment or supported learning that might not be available at your local college. Work-based learning or training programmes If you are taking part in work-based learning (such as an NVQ) or training or apprenticeship programmes, you should be supported to take part in and successfully complete the training. Because each programme is different, you should contact the provider to find out who will be responsible for arranging your support. (d) Who provides the support I need at college? If you are disabled you may need different kinds of support from different people while you are at college. It is important to know who is responsible for meeting your needs. • Educational needs 23
