Task<br />

Description<br />

The plann<strong>in</strong>g department with<strong>in</strong> <strong>Ronneby</strong> local authority wants, <strong>in</strong> partnership with<br />

CEFUR, to look at how recycl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>water</strong> can help to build a new susta<strong>in</strong>able urban<br />

<strong>residential</strong> (KILEN) <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ronneby</strong> <strong>in</strong>spired by the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> Cradle to Cradle.<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> the project is, <strong>in</strong> collaboration with a suitable College/University, exam<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

bra<strong>in</strong>storm and evaluate ideas regard<strong>in</strong>g how different elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>water</strong> recycl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

can be implemented <strong>in</strong> a new susta<strong>in</strong>able <strong>residential</strong> area.<br />

Areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest that should/need to be regarded are:<br />

- The four different types <strong>of</strong> waste<strong>water</strong>: dra<strong>in</strong>age, surface <strong>water</strong>, grey<strong>water</strong> and black<br />

<strong>water</strong>.<br />

- Possible <strong>in</strong>teraction with sister project ”Green facades and ro<strong>of</strong>s”.<br />

- Ma<strong>in</strong> focus should be <strong>water</strong> as a resource, a nutrient and as a source <strong>of</strong> energy.<br />

- Consider how implementation <strong>of</strong> a <strong>water</strong> recycl<strong>in</strong>g project will <strong>in</strong>fluence future<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>tenance.<br />

Background<br />

”Grey<strong>water</strong>” is waste<strong>water</strong> generated from domestic activities such as laundry, dishwashers,<br />

and bath<strong>in</strong>g that is flushed <strong>in</strong>to the sewer system. Not to be confused with<br />

sewage or black<strong>water</strong>, which is waste<strong>water</strong> from toilets. <strong>Recycl<strong>in</strong>g</strong> and treatment <strong>of</strong><br />

both grey<strong>water</strong> and black<strong>water</strong> are important elements <strong>in</strong> our efforts to build a susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

society.<br />

<strong>Ronneby</strong> is plann<strong>in</strong>g a new <strong>residential</strong> area <strong>in</strong> the centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ronneby</strong> (Kilen). The area<br />

will house flats, <strong>of</strong>fices and other functions built accord<strong>in</strong>g to the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> Cradle to<br />

Cradle. The plann<strong>in</strong>g department is responsible for project management <strong>in</strong> co-operation<br />

with CEFUR, which is <strong>Ronneby</strong>´s center for research and development. The ma<strong>in</strong> focus<br />

for CEFUR is susta<strong>in</strong>ability issues <strong>in</strong>spired by the pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> Cradle to Cradle.<br />

The plann<strong>in</strong>g department with<strong>in</strong> <strong>Ronneby</strong> Authority will support the student with all<br />

background knowledge and competence necessary to drive the project eg field visits,<br />

contacts with other departments etc.<br />
