The growth <strong>in</strong> the rented sector is reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong>. In 2006 2,706 households were<br />
rented (13.1% of the total stock). This had risen to 4,504 households <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong> (19.5% of total<br />
stock).<br />
Detached houses still dom<strong>in</strong>ate<br />
Despite the <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the number of newly constructed apartments <strong>in</strong> recent years, the<br />
detached house rema<strong>in</strong>s the most common type of accommodation <strong>in</strong> Ireland.<br />
Just over 40 per cent of occupied dwell<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> the State were detached houses <strong>in</strong> April <strong>2011</strong>,<br />
which was similar to the share recorded <strong>in</strong> 2002 and 2006.<br />
Counties <strong>in</strong> Connacht featured as hav<strong>in</strong>g the largest proportion of detached houses with more<br />
than seven out of every ten homes <strong>in</strong> Galway <strong>County</strong>, <strong>Roscommon</strong>, Leitrim and Mayo classified<br />
as this house type.<br />
Strong growth <strong>in</strong> apartments<br />
The rise of apartments as an accommodation type <strong>in</strong> Ireland has cont<strong>in</strong>ued between 2006 and<br />
<strong>2011</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>g to the census. Apartments accounted for 10.9 per cent of all household types <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>2011</strong>, compared with 9.7 per cent <strong>in</strong> 2006.<br />
Dubl<strong>in</strong> City had the highest proportion of apartments as a household type at 32.4 per cent,<br />
while <strong>Roscommon</strong> had the lowest with 2.4 per cent.<br />
Sewerage<br />
Public sewerage facilities were used for dispos<strong>in</strong>g the waste water of 1,092,418 households, or<br />
two-thirds of all private dwell<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> April <strong>2011</strong>. A further 437,652 (27.5%) households used an<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividual septic tank while 50,259 (3.2%) households adopted other <strong>in</strong>dividual sewerage<br />
systems.<br />
In <strong>Roscommon</strong>, 60 per cent of households used a septic tank or other <strong>in</strong>dividual sewerage<br />
treatment system.<br />
