<strong>Roscommon</strong><br />
Families<br />
There are 16,739 families <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong>, an <strong>in</strong>crease of 13.2 per cent s<strong>in</strong>ce the 2006 <strong>Census</strong>.<br />
Family size<br />
Nationwide, rural families were larger on average than those <strong>in</strong> urban areas. The average<br />
number of children per family was 1.5 <strong>in</strong> rural areas, compared with 1.3 for their urban<br />
counterparts.<br />
There is a clear North-West/South-East divide evident <strong>in</strong> family size. Donegal, Cavan and<br />
Monaghan had the largest families with 2.19 children per family on average. Leitrim and Mayo<br />
(each with 2.17 children per family) were next.<br />
The five cities had the smallest families <strong>in</strong> this category with fewer than 2 children per family<br />
on average. F<strong>in</strong>gal (2.00), South Dubl<strong>in</strong> (2.01) and Wicklow (2.02) also had smaller families than<br />
average.<br />
The average number of children per family <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong> was also 1.4, reflect<strong>in</strong>g the state<br />
average.<br />
