Leitrim (33.3%) had the highest proportion of rural households connected to the local authority sewerage<br />

network <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, followed by Wicklow (27.9%) and Kildare (25.8%).<br />

Just one <strong>in</strong> ten homes <strong>in</strong> the rural areas of Galway <strong>County</strong> availed of public sewerage facilities <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>,<br />

the lowest of any county. <strong>Roscommon</strong> and Monaghan (both 16.0%) and Wexford (16.4%) also recorded<br />

low rates of rural households with access to public sewerage schemes.<br />

Overall, there was an 11.8 per cent <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the number of households us<strong>in</strong>g public sewerage <strong>in</strong> the<br />

rural areas of the State s<strong>in</strong>ce April 2006. Counties show<strong>in</strong>g the largest <strong>in</strong>creases s<strong>in</strong>ce 2006 were<br />

<strong>Roscommon</strong> (39%) and Mayo (30.6%).<br />

Water supply<br />

Three-quarters of the occupied 1,649,408 permanent private households <strong>in</strong> April <strong>2011</strong> were<br />

connected to the public ma<strong>in</strong>s piped water supply. Of the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g households, 9 per cent<br />

were connected to a local authority group water scheme and 12.9 per cent were connected to<br />

a private source (group and other).<br />

In <strong>Roscommon</strong>, the picture is similar, with 63.3 per cent of households connected to the public<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
