Baltimore Hebrew Congregation Bulletin • Number 8 • 26 Adar II – 26 Nisan 5771 • April 2011 From The Clergy BHC’s Tree-Mend-Us Beginnings Over the last several years, BHC has been a leader among Baltimore Congregations in addressing environmental concerns. Caring for the Earth is a clear Jewish imperative drawn from the very foundation of our tradition. The Torah begins not with humanity, but with a story about the rest of Creation, teaching us that if humanity is to fulfill its potential “in the image of God,” we must have a world in which to do so. On Sunday, April 3, No o N, BHC will again lead the way as we partner with Bluewater Baltimore and TreeBaltimore in fortifying our city’s tree canopy, the part of the city that is shaded by trees. American Forests recommends that healthy cities need a 40% tree canopy. Baltimore’s current canopy is only about 27.4%. At the event we’re calling “Tree-Mend-Us Beginnings,” TreeBaltimore and Bluewater will provide us with 40 beautiful young trees to plant throughout our property. We will fill in existing lines on the Slade Avenue side as well as open spaces on Park Heights Avenue. My favorite part of the project will be the creation of a grove/sacred space that we can use for worship, educational gatherings and more. Since maintaining all those new trees will be significant work, we’re encouraging families and individuals to adopt a tree and commit to helping water and care for it over the next couple of years. More details on how to do that will follow, but if you’d like to be one of our caretakers, please let me know. “Tree-Mend-Us Beginnings” will also need lots of volunteers to get the planting done. Tools and materials will be provided, as well as lunch and babysitting! Also on April 3, TreeBaltimore and Bluewater Baltimore will have FREE trees available to anyone who wants to plant one at their home, as well as advice about how to do it. It is amazing how quickly the time has flown. I realize that I am prouder today of our Congregation than I have ever been. It is remarkable how dedicated our membership is. I can truly say that whenever a need arises, Congregants have stepped up to address our concerns. Night of the Stars, Saturday, April 2, 8 p m, will prove to be a great success, not only financially, but in terms of participation. The committee meetings I have attended show how vibrant and dedicated our members are; you won’t want to miss this event! Annual Giving, so necessary to our Congregation, has been very successful this year. Not only do we have more Congregants giving than ever before, but a large percentage, recognizing our need, have increased the size of their gifts. This beneficence allows us to ensure that all who are in need receive Congregational services, especially our children. A new endeavor for BHC will be the opening of an infant care program, which was approved by the Board of Electors at its February meeting. The advisory committee, ably chaired by Past President Ed Perl, is working diligently to see that this program will live up to the excellence that members and non-members alike expect and demand. Many Congregants, learning of our plans, responded immediately with donations to cover all the costs incurred in opening the center. I have come to appreciate in my year as President that BHC is a family. Like all Jews, we have varying opinions on every issue, yet when the chips are down, our family gathers together to support each other.
