8 DS Day School Doings A Fish in the Washtub Passover is my favorite holiday. When I was a child I watched my grandfather daven, hoping he did not keel over after hours of chanting. He never did. We drank some Manischewitz, sang Dayenu, and otherwise chilled out at the kids’ table. The biggest mystery to me was why my grandmother kept fish in the washtub in her basement. Finally, I asked her, and I learned that it was what she used to make gefilte fish; they were not her pets as I had imagined. Today’s children have questions as well, and while the traditions may have changed a bit, there are still wonders to impart every year. At the Day School we love the opportunity to teach our children about the holiday and its meaning. We have model seders, special treats and games, and our yearly “international charoset” event. Our hope is to instill in children a love and respect for tradition and ritual, and to infuse it with meaning and creativity. I envision that 20 years from now I will be invited to the home of a grown-up Day School graduate, and watch him/her impart the customs to his/her own children, who will ask their own questions. Hirsh Early Childhood Center is infant care. Starting this summer we will offer care for infants from 10 weeks of age through 18 months. One of our classrooms is being transformed into a warm, nurturing, stimulating environment for these newest and youngest students. Building community is what it’s all about. We all know that Brotherhood supports the Temple by providing auxiliary programs and services to help bring life to BHC. However, these days, whether it is at work, home or Temple, we are all being asked to do more with less. Both the men’s and women’s auxiliaries are ultimately working toward the same goal and each is working with fewer resources. Sometimes the gender separated effort, for an otherwise gender neutral program, is just too thin of a willing population to fill a room. Even worse, the event plans are scrapped. I have found that men are reluctant to attend programs sponsored by Sisterhood and women often feel the same way about attending Brotherhood events. The singular gender sponsorship seems to send a message of exclusion, even if the program is gender neutral. This is why I am supporting cross-population participation between Brotherhood and Sisterhood events; so that we can do more with less. Together we can make a sandwich of service called B.L.T, Bringing Life to Temple and no one will be left in a pickle. Bon appetit!
