Your Watermelon Committee has
been busy putting together the 30th
Annual Watermelon Ride for Monday,
July 4th, . Now that spring is here,
we’d like you to start getting as
excited about the ride as we are!
In fact, we’d like you to sign up for
the ride nice and early this year.
Don’t worry, you can finish this article
before you register. Our early
registration deadline isn’t until June
17th. However, if you wait to register
until the day of the ride on July 4th,
you will find the costs are the same
as last year. Kids under 18 years old
(and accompanied by an adult) are
still free.
We changed the rates last year to
encourage early registration, which
makes it much easier for us to
accurately plan enough food, water
bottles, and volunteers. Additionally,
it puts TCBC in a much better
financial position if the unthinkable
for any bike ride should happen
again: RAIN!! We’ll still be there with
the registration and the rodeo, the
routes, and the picnic lunch, but
riders who have put off their
registration until the day of the ride
will likely make different plans.
Would you like another reason to
register early? How about the
opportunity to buy a Watermelon
t-shirt (like the volunteers got last
year) for a bargain price? We won’t
have those t-shirts available to
purchase on July 4th – the early bird
gets the shirt.
Of course, there are plenty of reasons
other than apparel to ride the
Watermelon!
FREE WATER BOTTLES: We will
again be giving out free water bottles
to all riders.
RECOGNITION I O N CORNER
R
PRESIDENT'S E S COLUMN
This month we recognize:
Melanie Pidgeon, Kathy Mulier,
Patrick Morford, and one other
anonymous rider
It was a cold, cloudy, and windy April 15th as these riders made their
way through the Macalester-Groveland Neighborhood in St. Paul
toward Java Train while on the Friday on the Bike ride. They heard cries
for help down a side street and portaged through a couple yards to
discover two women who had become trapped on a second floor
balcony when the door they exited blew shut and locked behind them.
The two explained that the downstairs door was open, and Melanie
went through the house and let them back in. For almost half an hour
their cries had been unheard, and they were very relieved to have been
rescued from the cold.
Loren Schomaker
Broke away from the Sunday Morning Coffee Meander May 9th to help
some non-members who were unprepared to deal with a flat tire.
Perhaps he admonished them (after making repairs) that they should
not ride further from home than they are willing to walk back if they
travel without the fixin’s for a flat.
Dan Miller with a cast of thousands
(well, a dozen anyway)
Made the TCBC presence known and were greatly appreciated at the
recent REI Cyclefest and Active Living Bike Expo. Credits and kudos go
to: Maureen Peterson, Phillip Lawson, Tim Crear (REI Cyclefest) and
Maureen Peterson, Joe Dupont, Tanya Rice, Tim Crear, Susie Anderson,
Barb Miner, Les “Codger” Miner, Arlen “Grumpy” Scherber, Joann
Scherber (Active Living Bike Expo). They all made generous donations of
their time.
Sarah Hartmann
Once again this year took on the heroic job of coordinating volunteers
for the annual Minnesota IRONMAN Bike Ride. By her own admission
she’s been doing this since the Clinton administration, and amazingly,
maintains an extraordinary amount of enthusiasm and energy for it.
Many could (and certainly would) echo the cry: “You go, girl!” Gratitude
is also due to the dozens of volunteers who responded to Sarah’s
request for help. The IRONMAN is the biggest TCBC event of the year,
and it couldn’t happen without the likes of Sarah and scores of
volunteers.
Mary Miller
and many excellent contributors
Continue to make Bike U a success. Many have enjoyed and learned
from the fine presentations.
We encourage any member to pass along the names of fellow TCBC
members who deserve recognition of anything worthy of mention. Just
send your suggestions to recognition@biketcbc.org. THANKS!
PATT SELEEN
Greetings all TCBC members!
I’m so excited - our April membership
has soared to 1,812 members!
WOW! With that, I’d like to extend a
special welcome to the new
members. 62 (37 single and 8
households) joined TCBC with your
Ironman registration - so we know
what a hearty bunch you are. We
look forward to providing all of you
with many pleasant rides with low to
no wind and temps in the 70’s and
above.
For all of you new to club rides, our
“new member rides” are for you!
Board members (and leaders) Paul
and Garry spend time going over bike
safety and some basic group riding
skills followed by a club ride. They
have rides scheduled for June, July,
and August. The Ease Into Biking
Series (offered again in June) is also
geared towards getting you
comfortable with group rides. More
information on these rides can be
found in the ride schedule.
Thanks to all of you who represented
TCBC at recent events. We had a
great presence at REI, the Bike Expo,
and the Ironman. We had a
phenomenal year for Bike U – with
excellent attendance at the bike
clinics and the tour at QBP. A special
thanks to our sponsoring bike shops
and QBP for inviting us into their
facilities. We have a very active
committee organizing our annual July
4 Watermelon Ride. The volunteer
grid is up on the www – and filling in
fast. So, as you can see, there are
LOTS of ways to participate in the
club – besides just riding your bike!
Exciting: Check out the new
“mileage meter” on the web. We are
tracking our 1,000,000 mile
challenge with a new graphic. Our
new ride stats system makes it really
easy for us to provide more statistics
for the entire club – not just miles
that individuals are logging. When
you’re checking the www for rides,
check out the new “Dashboard” on
the home page – it’s really cool!
New: The board adopted a new rule
this year stating that we do not allow
the use of cell phones while biking
on club rides (that means taking and
making calls while in motion). We
are always cognizant of the safety of
our riders – and we believe this is an
important rule for all of us to follow.
We appreciate your cooperation
with this.
Invite: I’m leading an Outreach Ride
on June 18 – the Watercarnival Ride
in Hutchinson - 65 miles of new
roads to explore. There’s a separate
article in the newsletter and
information on the schedule. It’d be
great to have you come join me – it’s
going to be an adventure.
Looking forward to seeing you on the
road. Make every ride a safe ride!
VOLUNTEER E CORNER
R
VOLUNTEERS JOE DUPONT AND MARUEEN PETERSON AT THE BIKE EXPO
This past six weeks, 19 member
volunteers represented TCBC at the
REI Cyclefest, Active Living Bike Expo,
and Minnesota Ironman. It was a
very interesting mix of new and old
members. There were many inquiries
about the club and the organizations
appreciated TCBC’s attendance. Here
are a few comments from our
volunteers.
“I, myself, as a new member to TCBC
(first year) found myself having a
blast, talking about my own love of
biking, with other people who are out
there on the road. The beauty of
information expos and booths like
TCBC's, is not only the sharing of club
information and building bike
interest, but it's really about
promoting bike safety, and what
better way to do that but to
encourage safety in numbers.” –
Tanya Rice, Bike Expo
"It was fun! Great meeting you and
Paul and other TCBC members who
had the time to chat. It was a great
event…just wish the weather had
been better. It would have been
more interesting to hear from those
members/riders when they finished
the ride…I bet there were stories to
tell. No matter how far anyone went,
they accomplished a lot. They don’t
call it the Ironman for nothing!" –
Missi Priest, MN Ironman
“I go on a lot of rides and I really
respect our ride leaders who put in
the time and effort to make them
happen. A few hours at the TCBC
table at the Ironman is a way I can
contribute to our club. It's also a lot
of fun to see a lot of members I know
and meet a lot that I don't. It's also a
great way to keep our friendly
volunteer coordinator from giving me
the evil eye! The variety of riding gear
that people had on for such a
weather-challenging day was really
amazing. Good people-watching
opportunity.” – Peter Neubeck, MN
Ironman
Thanks goes to all of these volunteers
with a special nod to Maureen
Peterson, Tim Crear, Kathy and Pete
Hawkins. Maureen participated at all
three events. Tim did two events and
two shifts at the Bike Expo. Kathy and
Pete did a double shift at the Ironman
to allow the volunteer coordinator to
finish his Ironman ride.
Other news
The Watermelon Ride volunteer
roster is now up on the TCBC website.
Check it out to see what positions are
open and contact watermelon@
biketcbc.org to volunteer. It would
be nice to have names behind all the
assignments by mid-June so we are
well prepared for the ride.
While you are on the TCBC website,
check out the new “Volunteer” forum
on the message board. The
Volunteer forum is for TCBCsponsored
and biking- related events.
This will provide another way to get
the message out to our membership
about volunteering opportunities.
If you wish to receive e-mail updates
when items are posted to the
Volunteer forum you need to do the
following:
Click on the "Volunteer" forum on the
Message Board. In the upper right
hand corner click on "watch this
forum".
You can then choose how you want
to be notified if topics are posted to
the forum.
Now – Let’s get out there and ride!
make you eligible for a fine volunteer
gift. We need you!
See you July 4th! May the
Watermelon be with you.
Community Highlights:
Minneapolis has the second most
number of bicycle commuters of the
larger cities in the U.S., right behind
the truly four-season-city Portland.
Minneapolis has invested in a
connected network of more than 120
miles of on and off street facilities,
launched education programs for
cyclists, and encouraged more
people to get on their bikes. The
city's bicycle ambassador program
employs four full-time staff who are
dedicated to build a culture of
courtesy, acceptance and safety for
all mode shares including motorists,
bicyclists, and pedestrians. The city
also promotes bicycling by offering
subsidized shower, locker and bicycle
storage facilities at two downtown
parking facilities. On Bike to Work
Day 2008, Mayor Rybak pedaled his
bicycle to win the Twin Cities’ firstever
Great Commuter Challenge –
which included commuters by car,
transit and foot.
Most Compelling Community
Statistic: The estimated percentage
of commuters who bicycle in
Minneapolis increased from 2.5
percent to 3.8 percent between 2006
and 2007 – the second largest increase
out of America’s largest 50 cities.
(Editor’s Note: The League of
American Bicyclists (LAB) presents
certifications to various U.S. cities
and businesses each year, using
standard criteria. Minneapolis was
the only city to move up to gold this
year, and above is the LAB’s
description. Bronze cities included
Eau Claire and Des Moines.
Honorable Mentions included Apple
Valley, Rosemount, and Mankato.)
OUR CLUB The Twin Cities Bicycling
Club (TCBC) is the Twin Cities’ largest
recreational cycling club. We typically
appeal to adult, intermediate cyclists
who like group riding but don’t race.
We ride mostly on low-traffic roads
and use maps. We generally don’t
mark our routes or sag our rides.
Please use the ride key to choose rides
suited to your abilities.
HELMETS: Must be properly worn and
fastened by everyone on all TCBC rides
and must be ANSI or Snell-approved.
TOOLS: Carry these on your bike: tire
levers, a pump, spare tube, patch kit.
WATER: You should drink water
before you ride, and carry water with
you on the ride, drinking frequently.
AT THE RIDE START: Arrive early and
allow time to get yourself and your
equipment ready, sign the registration
sheet, and (if you are not a member)
pay the leader the trip fees. All bike
trips list the time the trip actually
departs from the start. There will be a
briefing by the leader.
DAY TRIP FEES: NO CHARGE for TCBC
members & families, $2.00 for nonmembers,
$4.00 for each non-member
family. Pre-registration isn’t necessary
unless stated.
MOUNTAIN BIKE (MB) RIDES
Mountain bikes are required for MB
rides. Protective glasses are highly
recommended. MB rides may require
more protective clothes. Muddy terrain
rides of any ride type. Ride length is
not necessarily the same for the same
ride types.
LEADER SPEED Leaders may choose to
ride slower than the Minimum Average
Riding Speed on any ride. Leaders may
choose to ride faster than the Average
Riding Speed on all A and A/B Rides.
LEADER SUPPORT will be available
only to those who are riding at or
above the minimum average riding
speed on B and B/C rides. Leader
support will be available to all riders
on C rides.
may be common. There will probably
be NO water available, so bring two full
bottles. Experienced TCBC road riders
new to mountain biking should select
MB rides at least one Ride Type lower
than they normally ride “on-road.”
RIDE SAFE!
Beautiful, expressive lakes provide an
extraordinary backdrop for the Water
Carnival Bike Ride. Come for the day
or weekend to enjoy the bike ride and
so much more!
Just a stone’s throw from the metro,
Hutchinson is the starting point for
20-mile and 65-mile rides that
celebrate the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
The 20-mile ride can be fun for all
ages and skill levels. This ride travels
outside Hutchinson into the lake
country a short distance, turns back
to town, and includes a ride along the
Crow River on the Luce Line Trail.
The 65-mile ride, though relatively
flat, travels much farther through the
lake country and passes thru the
towns of Dassel and Litchfield before
returning back to Hutchinson and
also riding along the Crow River on
the Luce Line Trail. Showers are
available back at the Hutchinson
Middle School, if you choose to
change and enjoy a potpourri of fun
events in town.
Heartland Trail Weekend
Join us on a three-day trek of C(+)
trail rides and after-ride fun activities.
Trails are railroad grades with 10-foot
blacktopped surfaces and generally
level. Routes pass through northern
hardwood forests and stands of jack,
red, and white pine. On Friday we
bike 44 miles from Baxter to Pequot
Lakes and return. We set up our
accommodations for the weekend in
Walker and meet for dinner at
Benson's 1896 Emporium, a local
eatery. Saturday we bike 41 miles
from Guthrie to Bemidji (new section
opened in 2010).
Fun options include dining at
Brauhaus German Restaurant and an
evening out at the Woodtick Musical
Comedy Review in Akeley. (tickets
$16.50 or $15.50/seniors). Sunday we
wind up with a 42-mile trek from
Walker to Dorset with a feature lunch
stop at Mexican Campaneros
Restaurant at noon. Come for one,
two, or preferably all three days. You
will make your own lodging
accommodations. (Early bookings
recommended.) Contact Diana and
PBDC
The Paul Bunyan Double
Century celebrates its
45th year on Saturday,
June 18.
It’s one of the oldest Double
Centuries in the entire country. A
challenging ride of 202 miles, it takes
us from Anoka to Mille Lacs Lake,
around it and back again. This route
and indeed the ride as a whole have
remained essentially unchanged over
all these years.
This A/B level ride is free of charge
for TCBC members and only $2.00 for
non-members. Meet at Anoka Senior
High School after 4:15 AM, 3939 7th
Ave. It's about 1.5 miles north of Hwy
10 on 7th Ave (Co Rd 7). Turn left at
the 38th Ave stoplight. (This is
actually the school parking lot
entrance.) We’ll begin the ride as a
group at about 5 AM. The PBDC is not
a race. However, as is tradition, you’ll
be timed to the minute (no sprints!)
and this time will be recorded on
your ride certificate. The route is
basically flat with a few small rollers.
For the most part, traffic levels are
moderate. Perhaps 10% of the route
gets heavy use, but this portion has a
wide shoulder.
Food and water (convenience stores)
are located on average at 20-mile or
so intervals and will be well marked
on the ride map. Please come
prepared and trained for the
distance. It’s essential to eat smart
(early and often); drink smart (before
you’re thirsty) and ride smart (ride a
pace you’re accustomed to). As
always, I will be driving the route and
will offer assistance if I can. I’ll carry
cold water, a few basic tools, a floor
pump and maybe even some
bananas! However, it’s quite possible
that our paths may not cross for the
entire ride, so keep that in mind.
There is no sag-wagon! If you’re
unable to finish, you’ll have to
arrange your own transport back to
the start.
The official lunch stop will again be
the Spotlight Svoboda Café in
Garrison at the halfway point. I highly
recommend it. So, put in a few early
miles and muster the courage to ride
the Paul Bunyan Double this year.
You’ll likely discover that it’s not as
tough as you anticipated, assuming
good weather of course. In truth, you
really should know that riding the
PBDC could become a habit that’s
very hard to break! (Bob Hoffman,
BACK OF THE PACK
Herb Bench Dedication Ride
and Picnic Set for June 26
Just east of the Sabo Bridge over
Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis sits
a new bench alongside the Greenway,
inviting bicyclists to sit and relax.
And that’s most appropriate, because
the bench was placed there this
spring – paid for by TCBC members
-- to honor the late Herb Schultz,
surely one of the most welcoming
ride leaders the TCBC has ever had. It
carries a plaque saying, “In Honor of
Herb Schultz … Friend – Bicyclist
– Mentor … a favorite Twin Cities
Bicycling Club Ride Leader.”
The club will be dedicating the bench
on Sunday, June 26, with three 10 AM
rides – for B, B/C and C riders –
preceding the 12:30 PM dedication at
the bench. All rides will leave from
Brackett Park, about a mile east of
the bench, stop at the bench for the
dedication, then proceed back to
Brackett Park. (The park is along 28th
St. E, just east of 36th Ave. S.)
A picnic will held at Brackett Park at 1
PM following the dedication. The cost
will be $5 per person to help defray
the cost of food and renting the park
shelter.
All club members are invited; even if
you don’t choose to ride, you’re still
welcome to join your fellow members
at the picnic. If rain wipes out the
rides (hey, Herb didn’t like to ride in
the rain, either) the dedication and
picnic will be held inside the park
shelter at Brackett Park.
RSVPs are necessary for the picnic.
You can email your RSVP to
HerbPicnicRSVP@bikeTCBC.org by
the deadline, June 21, or check the
while they last!"
Herbie
The quintessential back of the packer
was Herb Schultz. Herbie didn't have
to ride at the back. He also didn't
have to gather up new riders, some
young and some on the other side of
young, to come to his rides. He didn't
have to encourage folks just getting
back into cycling after decades of
watching an old bike with deflated
tires sit in the garage to join his riding
bunch. Herbie didn't even have to
arrive an hour early for bike rides just
to "set a spell" and visit with a few
people who would come ahead of
time to exchange updates on life,
work, friends, and pie. But he did just
that because he was Herbie. So in his
memory, which brings a smile to
many of our faces, I asked a few of his
cycling companions to share a
memory of Herb.
For me, riding with Herb started with
a phone call about finding a place to
stay in the Lanesboro area for his
annual fall ride along the trails along
the Root River. He could have simply
said here is a list of hotels and most
are booked, which is a cold reality of
that time of year in SE Minnesota.
But Herbie instead knew who was
coming, and who had a spare bed in
their room and might be looking for a
roommate. He knew this not because
he was helping coordinate lodging
but because he knew his people so
well and in casual conversation; they
shared with him where they were
staying and what their roommate
situation was. He also asked me
about myself and calmed my anxiety
about going out of town with a group
of people who I didn't know and had
no idea if I would fit in with, let alone
be able to ride all day with them on
my old bicycle.
That weekend I was warmed by the
friendly "Herb bunch" and realized
this was far more than a cycling
weekend. It was a group of friends
that chose to share their lives
whether they were on the bike,
eating dinner, going to the theater, or
sitting around a campfire. An
amazing realization was that age,
ability, and appearance didn't matter,
nor did whether you opted in or out
of each suggested event. And I
learned that Herbie was a good
cyclist but chose to lead from the
back of the pack, most often quietly
observing his "pack" with occasional
reminders to the front runners to
keep it to a C riding speed.- Karen J
Here are several others’ favorite
memories of Herb....
I didn’t often ride in back with Herbie,
because I was one of those who
frequently showed up an hour early
to sit with him in his big Explorer and
discuss life, love, and leisure. His
rides were often mapless, and he’d
enlist me to ride “point” with only a
vague description of the route and an
admonishment to avoid hills. The
bunch would pedal along with me up
front trying to hold things down to a
C pace while trying to outline
upcoming turns for the folks wanting
to ride ahead. I’d often glance to the
back of the pack to make sure Herb
was in sight and occasionally he’d
shout out to slow things down a bit.
After a stop for soup we’d return to
the ride start, and Herb would always
wrap things up by saying: “Let’s hear
it for Jeffie!”, and I in turn would say:
“Let’s hear it for Herbie!” (the
quintessential back of the packer).
Herb is gone, and it is infrequent that
I’m up front, but if I am I can’t help
but glance back to see if Herb is
there, and his requests to slow it
down still echo in my ears. Most days
slowing down and hanging in back
still seems like fine advice! - Jeff R
I rode literally hundreds of rides with
Herb over the years, and co-led
dozens of them with him. So I often
rode at “the back of the pack” with
him, as he played mother hen to all
the guests on his rides. Herb was
almost always back there to help if
you had a flat or other mechanical
problem.
Mind you, Herb helping didn’t
necessarily solve the problem quickly,
but he was always willing to try.
Once, several years ago, Herb, I and
the rest of the Bunch all left a
restaurant in Cornell, at the end of
the Old Abe Trail, to head back down
the trail to Chippewa Falls. Herb
started off in his usual last position, I
was second-to-last, and about a half
a block ahead of us was the rest of
the Bunch, including Terry Osell.
Anyone who’s ever been on a “Herb
ride” where Terry was riding knows
that Terry was the unofficial “tire
fixer” when anyone has a flat. Terry,
who designs and builds bikes, and
owned a bike shop for many years,
sees changing a flat tire as about as
challenging as putting on a biking
jersey. Watching him is a 90-second
free clinic on how to fix a flat tire.
So, a half-block from the restaurant,
when I heard a “pop” from my rear
tire and we braked to a halt, Herb’s
and my first thought was not,
“Where’s the spare tube?” but
“Where’s Terry?” There he was, a
18 JUNE 2011 TCBC NEWS www.bikeTCBC.org TWIN CITIES BICYCLING CLUB

BACK OF THE PACK
block ahead at the end of the pack,
going around a corner. Where others
in the club who got a flat might have
stopped, taken out the tools, and
started taking off the tire, what Herb
and I did was run down the street
yelling, “Terry! Terry!”
But to no avail, as Terry was out of
sight. So it was up to Herb and me to
fix the tire, something we’d rarely
done, because Terry was on so many
of his rides in those days. Forty-five
fumbling, bumbling, “you’ve-got-iton-wrong,
dammit,” minutes later,
we finally got rolling.
When we eventually caught up with
Terry and the Bunch at a rest stop at
Jim Falls, Terry asked innocently,
“Where were you guys?” Herb just
smiled, and said, “Donny and I were
taking our time, enjoying the
scenery.” Neither of us wanted to
admit Terry was 30 times faster at
fixing tires than two of the fearless
leaders on the ride. -Don P
My first TCBC ride was a "Herbie"
ride. I had a lot of fun and Herbie
made me feel at ease with the group
even though I did not know anyone
there. I immediately signed up to
become an official member of TCBC
and went on to ride with Herbie on
many, many "C" rides and weekend
trips. My last and wonderful memory
of Herbie was when we had to cancel
a ride (due to rain) and instead we
ended up having a great potluck
party at my house. Herbie always
loved a good potluck gathering!! Two
weeks later he passed away. I will
never forget all the fun times we had
with Herbie. He was definitely one of
a kind. - Joan D
One of our fondest memories of
riding with Herb occurred when he
asked us to plan a three-day bike ride
on the Paul Bunyan and Heartland
Trails. Our Saturday night included
going to the Brauhaus German
Restaurant where Herb had their
special Schweinhaxe, followed by the
performance at the Woodtick
Theater where Herb “rocked and
rolled” to the fiddle music. His
laughter at the comic routines was
heard throughout the theater. Herb
enjoyed it so much that this has
become an annual TCBC trip (June
17-19 in 2011). - Diana and Duane K
From 2001 thru 2009 I co-led many
rides with Herb, both as an
"ambassador" and an official club ride
leader. As we were rolling along, I will
never forget Herbie's big shout out
"hold up" which could mean several
things - we had dropped someone at
a light, someone had a flat or other
mechanical problem - but it was
mainly a nice warning to "slow
down". At the finish of a ride Herbie
was always ready to lead a cheer for
the ride leader. I especially miss his
"Let's hear it for June." Herbie might
be gone but I will never forget him.
-June J
One special memory I have of Herb
was his unique handshake involving
bumping and twisting fists, fingers,
thumbs, and elbows. I tried my best
to remember the rather complicated
sequence and aspired to join the
group that greeted Herb in this
special way. Once on a weekend ride,
I was determined to get it right. After
the first day's handshake, I was fairly
sure that I had finally learned it. On
the second day, I confidently strode
up to Herb and we did the sequenced
handshake without a hitch. I smiled
and said, "Herb, it took me years to
finally learn the handshake. I can't
understand why it took so long."
With a wink, Herb then simply stated,
"well, Dave, that is because it is
different every time." We had a good
laugh about that. - Dave M
IN BRIEF
Herb that live on in our hearts and
minds. His memory comes up on bike
rides regularly as we wind along
trails, past lakes, in the forests, and
through urban landscapes. He still
can make us laugh, and we always
knew that the world was right when
he was with us on a ride. Some of us
believe he is still riding along with us
in spirit and caring about all the
people on his rides, especially those
at the back.
MARSHALL "MAJOR" TAYLOR'S 1899 TRACK BIKE
Major Taylor Book Release
Major Taylor Bicycling Club of MN is
proud to present the American
Release of …“Major Taylor in
Australia”. Jim Fitzpatrick, author of
"Major Taylor in Australia" (Star Hill
Studio, 2011), will join us for a retelling
of the greatest American
athletic story ever forgotten.
Major Taylor in Australia, the basis
for the award-winning Tracks of
Glory, is the first significant new work
on Major Taylor since Andrew
Ritchie’s original biography in 1988.
Major Taylor, the black American
cyclist and 1899 World Sprint
Champion, was the highest paid and
most famous athlete in what was then
the world’s most popular and lucrative
sport. Spectators packed stadiums in
North America, Europe, and
Australasia to watch him race. In the
United States, however, his white
rivals’ racial bigotry, hatred, threats,
and dangerous and dirty riding tactics
became intolerable. In Australia, in
1904, Taylor faced his American arch
enemy, and hostilities came to a head.
Come join us for evening with Jim
Fitzpatrick as he walks us through this
great period in Major Taylor’s life. We
will discuss his life’s accomplishments,
innovative training, spiritual
commitment, his great challenges
and why he is still relevant in 2011.
He has been rediscovered as an
American hero in the “new golden
age of cycling”.
When: June 16, 2011, 6 PM
Where: The Center For Families,
3333 North 4th Street,
Minneapolis, MN 55412
The event is FREE and a light dinner
will be provided. Bike Parking will be
available.
Please RSVP Anthony@
COLDEST IRONMAN EVER
And also one of the windiest! Using
the official weather stats from the
airport that I have piled up over the
years, it was our coldest IRONMAN
since the event started in 1967. The
daily high on May 1 was 43 at 1 AM.
Day’s low of 33 was 8 AM, and the
highest temp during the ride was 39
at 3 PM. This beats all other years the
way I read it.
The average wind speed was 19 mph,
with gusts into the 30‘s, and wind
chills in the 20’s. During the ride, the
wind never dropped below 15 mph
on the hourly figures. It was a steady
blast out of the west. Just to keep an
old tradition going too, a trace of
snow was recorded, and some of us
IRONMAN N 2011
saw that and laughed, or possibly
reacted in other ways.
A cloudy, cold, windy day again. At
least there was only a trace of precip.
Blame an intense area of low pressure
near Winnipeg. Or just blame
karma. The event was pushed into
May because Easter was the Sunday
previous, and it still didn’t improve
things. Somewhere around 3000 bikers
were actually on the road, down
from last year. Eight buses were used
and sagged more than 200 bikers.
Dedication shown that day by the
riders and volunteers was certainly
impressive!
BIKE TRAIL GUIDELINES
I E SPRINGTIME ON THE GATEWAY PHOTO DON PICARD
TCBC Bike Trail Use Hazards
and Guidelines
by Pete Hawkins
Bike trails offer many advantages to
cyclists, such as being free of
automobiles and their toxic fumes
along with improved scenery and
closer proximity to nature. But they
are not risk free…
Bike Trail Hazards
-“Bicycle crashes happen almost
three times as often on paths as on
streets.”
(Source: http://www.mrbike.com/
ask%20stats.php )
• The most dangerous sections of
bike trails is where they intersect
roads. Accidents involving motor
vehicles are usually the most serious,
often lethal.
• Dangers related to people include:
two way traffic, multiple sport use,
use by very young and/or
inexperienced riders, fast and slow
riders mixed, unpredictable behavior,
domestic animals, and potential
criminal behavior.
• Dangers related to nature and trail
conditions include: small animals
crossing; higher concentration of
bees and wasps; debris such as
leaves, sticks, sand, and rocks; slick
surfaces due to wet leaves, moss,
frost, or ice; pot holes, cracks,
bumps, and trail edges.
• Wooden bridges can be
unexpectedly very slippery in any
weather.
• Unexpected very steep inclines
and/or descents.
• Sight lines are often limited.
Bike Trail Guidelines
• Biking speed on bike trails must be
reduced to take into account all of
the hazards listed above.
• If a bike trail has a posted speed
limit, it must be obeyed.
• In most cases, a speed limit of less
than 16 mph is recommended.
• Fast riding alone or in groups is not
appropriate or safe on bike trails.
• Bicyclists should ride single file on
busy trails or ones with poor sight
lines.
• When approaching dogs and/or
horses, slow your speed, announce
your presence, and be wary of their
behavior.
• Stop and yield signs must be
obeyed at all bike trail intersections.
• Use extra caution in tunnels and
under bridges.
• At road intersections, if no painted
crosswalk is present, trail users must
wait for a clear intersection to cross.
• Calling out “Passing on your left!”,
and using a bell if available, should be
done whenever passing other trail
users.
• Remain alert for unannounced
passing cyclists and other trail users.
• If stopping on a trail, get
completely off the trail.
• As when on the road, always call
out hazards and signal your moves to
riders behind you.
LEAGUE OF AMERICAN
BICYCLISTS 2011
NATIONAL BIKE SUMMIT
By Paul Frenz
Between March 8th and 10th, I
attended my third consecutive
National Bike Summit, sponsored by
the League of American Bicyclists
(LAB) in Washington, D.C. This
Summit kicked off with a dinner
Tuesday night (March 8th). Ray
LaHood, the Secretary of the U. S.
Department of Transportation, was
the keynote speaker and repeated
his personal and the Department’s
continuing support for bicycles as a
mode of transportation.
On Wednesday morning the Summit
began in earnest with an opening
session welcome by Congressman
Earl Blumenauer of Oregon.
Congressman Blumenauer, the
leading bicycle proponent on Capitol
Hill now that Jim Oberstar is no
longer in office there, observed that
Congress has changed since the 2010
elections and that our message
should be: “Don’t cut what you have
not seen.”
Janette Sadik-Kahn, Commissioner of
the New York City Department of
Transportation, spoke about how
New York City has become more bike
friendly by adding bike lanes, bike
boxes, and signage to facilitate the
movement of bicyclists. Ms. Sadik-
Kahn, who is also the President of
the National Association of City
Transportation Officials (NACTO),
announced that NACTO had recently
produced and published online an
Urban Bikeway Design Guide with
state-of-the-art practice solutions
for on-street bicycle facilities. This
Guide was produced because many
of NATCTO’s members found existing
design manuals to be inadequate
and out of date. This Design Guide
can be found at www.nacto.org/
cities-for-cycling/design-guide.
The third speaker at the opening
session was Ken Salazar, the
Secretary of the U. S. Department of
Interior. Secretary Salazar
PAUL FRENZ
emphasized that the outdoor
industry, which includes the bike
industry, creates jobs and that bike
trails on federal lands get people on
bikes, which contributes to the
better health of these bicyclists.
Through the American Great
Outdoors program, Secretary Salazar
hopes to create more bike trails in
both urban and rural federal parks.
Because of the change in the
makeup of the current Congress,
LAB advised the attendees at the
Summit that the message to
Congress, through the state
delegations, should be “ do not cut”
bike-related programs that have
dedicated funding such as
Transportation Enhancements, Safe
Routes to School, and Recreational
Trails. The remainder of Wednesday
consisted of breakout sessions
stressing the various areas of the
Summit’s policy agenda to be
presented to Congress.
On Thursday, with other members of
the Minnesota delegation, I met
with the legislative assistants for
Representatives Betty McCollum and
Michele Bachmann and Senator Al
Franken. We also met with Rep.
Keith Ellison and his legislative
assistant and with Sen. Amy
Klobuchar and her legislative
assistant. From these meetings it
was clear that McCollum, Ellison,
Klobuchar, and Franken would
support the LAB’s policy agenda.
Rep. Bachmann’s legislative assistant
listened to the positions we were
requesting without comment and
did not commit that Rep. Bachmann
would support these positions.
For the activity year that started last
November 1, here are the folks with
