Buffaloes
FC coffers
bleeding
head coach Luke Masomere missed Buffaloes’
trip to Bulawayo where they lost 3- 1 to Bantu
Rovers
By our correspondent
PREMIERSHIP side Buffaloes
FC’s life in the topflight
league is under threat
as their players are yet to receive
their signing-on fees and salaries
for the past six months.
Standardsport also learnt that
head coach Luke “Vahombe”
Masomere missed yesterday's
trip to Bulawayo where they lost
3-1 to Bantu Rovers.
Unconfirmed reports have
been linking the nomadic coach
to struggling Lowveld side Triangle
.
The situation in Buffaloes
camp got worse last week after
some players were almost
chucked out from their lodgings
owing to non-payment of their
rentals by the club.
The players who nearly faced
the wrath of their landlords are
mostly those that joined the club
at the beginning of the season.
The players sat out during a
training session last week as
they protested for their outstanding
dues.
On Friday there was chaos
in the Buffaloes camp after
one player (name withheld) disappeared
with US$100 that was
meant to be shared among five
Bantu Rovers in yesterday.
Buffaloes purse has been fat
for the past two seasons as they
got huge donations from Mbada
Diamonds, their principal sponsors.
However, the donation for
this season is yet to come and the
situation has been worsened by
the poor attendance of the army
side’s home matches.
An insider confirmed to Standardsport
yesterday that one player
had helped himself, pocketing
US$100 which was meant to be
shared among five players. The
player in question ended up not
travelling with the rest of the
team to Bulawayo.
“Each player was given $20 and
(he) grabbed the opportunity after
he was given US$100 to share
with other players and disappeared
with the money and did
not travel to Bulawayo,” said the
source.
Masomere who did not travel
with the team to Bulawayo said
he heard about the money issue.
“l heard about the issue but
I was not there. I am not surprised
about that because when
there is no money, there is no
discipline, you can call the secretary
general of the team Arnold
Gatsi. But what I can tell
you is that players need food on
the table,” he said.
Arnold Gatsi was not available
for comment.
As the financial woes mount in
the army side’s camp, reports that
secretary general Tendai Chitowa
has tendered his resignation for
reasons which are not yet clear.
Chitowa, a local businessman
in Mutare, was playing a pivotal
role at the army side as he would
sometimes part with his own
money to assist the team.
He however told this publication
that he will comment over
the matter when he returns from
South Africa.
Club Chairman Hlanganiso Matangaidze
said he is still waiting
for Chitowa to return from South
Africa, admitting that their coffers
were bleeding.
Nakamba inspired
by Moukandjou
BY MICHAEL MAdyIRA
Former Zimbabwe youth international
midfielder Marvelous Nakamba
looks to his AS Nancy teammate
and Cameroon forward Benjamin
Moukandjou as his biggest
inspiration in his debut French
League2 season.
Moukandjou made international
headlines last Thursday after
he was head-butted by compatriot
and Tottenham left-back Benoit Assou
Ekotto during Camaroon’s 4-0
thumping by Croatia at the ongoing
Fifa World Cup.
It had to take Achille Webo to restrain
Assou-Ekitto while captain
Samuel Eto’o also had a busy time
containing the defender’s explosion
after the final whistle.
With Moukandjo maintaining his
cool after the head-butt, it is not surprising
that Nakamba drew inspiration
from the former Monaco man
in his maiden League2 season.
“Benjamin Moukandjo inspires
me,” said Nakamba.
“Yes, he is from Cameroon but
he speaks both English and French
and that is how I easily communicate
with him. l can speak French
but not that fluent,” he said.
AS Nancy narrowly missed
League1 promotion on the final day
of last season with Nakamba making
six appearances after graduating
from the reserve side in January.
Although most of his appearances
were cameo roles, he lasted the
entire match in the 3-1 win over An-
Marvelous Nakamba
gers after making his senior debut
against Tours in February.
His campaign also included a sixminute
substitute appearance in the
0-0 draw away at Benjani Mwaruwari’s
former club AJ Auxerre.
Being thrown into the thick of
things at a critical period when AS
Nancy were pushing for League1
promotion underlines Nakamba’s
talent.
The 20-year-old attacking linkman
joined AS Nancy in June 2012
from Bantu Rovers after also trying
out at Belgian Jupiler side Cercle
Brugge.
He had made his Premier Soccer
League debut as a 16-year-old in 2010
in a Rovers team that included Hebert
Dick and Danny Phiri.
Black Rhinos, Triangle draw
By Mukudzei Chingwere in kAdoMA
Black Rhinos . . . 0
Triangle . . . 0
BLACK Rhinos failed to utilise
home advantage as they allowed
visiting Triangle FC to restrict
them to a goalless draw in a Castle
Lager premiership match at Rimuka
yesterday.
Both teams came into the match
looking for maximum points following
their subdued performance
in the league this far.
Triangle were the better side and
their head coach Biggie Zuze felt
they deserved to win.
“We created a lot of chances but
we could not bury them. We were
also affected by the bumpy pitch
but the boys did well,” Zuze said.
Army side coach Arthur Tutani
was a disappointed man after
failing to get maximum points at
home.
“I thought we were going to utilise
home advantage and get three
points following our away draw
away at FC Platinum. But anyway,
half a loaf is better than nothing,”
Tutani said.
From the first whistle, action
swung from end to end with both
teams creating few scoring chances.
With five minutes to halftime,
Rhinos skipper Bruce Homora did
well to deny Richard Kawondera a
scoring opportunity with an overhead
kick with Jonathan Zvaita in
goals a beaten man.
Fifteen minutes after the breather,
Kawondera failed to connect a Tatenda
Tsuro cross. Lameck Nhamo
was to be the next Triangle player
in line to miss yet another glorious
chance, directing his effort wide
from a Praise Tonha cross.
With 12 minutes to full-time,
James Mukombwe had a chance
to win it for Chipembere but his ferocious
shot was pushed over the
bar by the alert Ronald Mudimu in
goals for Triangle.
Bantu Rovers end winless streak
OBADIAH Tarumbwa scored a
brace as Bantu Rovers remembered
how to win, to end a winless
streak in a Castle Lager Premier
Soccer League match at Luveve
yesterday.
The win sent Bantu Rovers two
places up to 12 th position with 13
points.
Tarumbwa, who also assisted in
the third goal scored by Bukhosi
Sibanda, put the home side ahead
in the 22 nd minute and added another
eight minutes later.
Sibanda, who came on as a substitute
in the 29 th minute for Moses
Majika killed the game as a
contest seven minutes from full
time.
Bantu Rovers had to make two
injury inspired substitutions for
Lawson Nkomo in the 51 st minute
with Bongani Sikwili taking his
place while Nqobizitha Masuku
was stretchered off the field and
had to be replaced by Zephania
Ngodzo.
Buffaloes who were without
head coach Luke Masomere who
did not travel with the team due
to illness, got their face saver
from Jacob Muzokomba in the 33 rd
minute.
Bantu Rovers assistant coach
Mandla Mpofu had this to say after
the match: “We played well in the
first half and we created chances
and we were happy going to the
break with a 2-1 lead although we
were not happy that we conceded.
Unfortunately, we had to make
two injury inspired substitutions
but we organised ourselves well
and we got the goal that sealed the
game. As I said, during the week
we are not relegation candidates.
We are going to fight in the last 18
games and survive.”
Buffaloes assistant coach Timothy
Masachi said they had defended
poorly.
“We gave away poor goals due to
defensive blunders. Our defence
was not tight and we did not create
chances to score. We were also
poor in our attacking. We need to
pull up and rectify our mistakes,”
he said.
