Café Habana are hosting a whole weekend of
Hallowe’en mayhem from Fri 29th Oct to Sat 31st
Oct. As always they have gone all out with the
decs, themed drinks and cabaret. Their ghoulish
weekend culimates in a charity fundraiser on Sun
30th Oct from 6pm, for local charity LGBT Youth
Scotland – so dig deep folks! Carrying on their
reputation as our scene’s biggest charity donators,
the tomfoolery includes karaoke, cabaret, prizes
for the best-dressed and of course a fantastic
raffle! Get down to this amazing night and also
grab the chance to chat with some of LGBT Youth
Scotland’s finest volunteers and staff. Habs have
also launched a new quiz night, every Mon night
from 9pm. Their first quiz saw Miss Coco Chanel
hosting this night of brain teasing, and at only £1
to enter the prize was £100 cash.
Big news this Hallowe’en is the
announcement of a surprise Tackno event! A
fantastic night of cheesy entertainment that just
keeps coming. Tackno will be taking over Elbow
Edinburgh on Sun 31st Oct from 10pm for a
Haunted House party!!! Publicity materials say it’s
taking place at the Ghillie Dhu, but some fool there
double booked. They will be transforming the place
into a Hammer House of Horrors! Join DJ Trendy
Wendy for spine-chillingly cheesy tunes... And
dress to distress with Fancy ‘fearless’ Nancy and
the ghostesses with the mostess! They sure do
know how to throw a themed party. Plus all your
Tackno favourites... prizes, performances and
plenty of surprises!!! They have applied for a 3am
license. Entry is FREE, but it’s a charity fundraiser
so donations are suggested. Other news at Elbow
is that they will be having live music every first Fri
of the month from The Hanley Tree.
Planet too are hosting a BIG Hallowe’en
weekend. The party kicks off with Deejay Bird on
Fri 29th Oct from 9pm and Dj Daz Glas on Sat 30th
Oct. The staff and bar will be fully dressed to
impress in Wizard of Oz theme, so come along and
check out all your favourite characters - including
the luscious Miss Cilla serving on Sat night as
Dorothy! On Sun 31st Oct, Cilla, Daz and Lala will
be hosting an evening of games, prizes and drinks
promos from 8pm. They are the official pre-club
party destination before you all head to GHQ for
the spooky goings on there all weekend!! With free
passes for Fri and Sat as usual.
Down at GHQ, their Hallowe’en weekend kicks
off with Gory Hole on Fri 29th Oct from 9pm-3am,
with Miss Cilla Slack and DJ Michelle. Show them
your trick and they will give you a musical treat!
Entry is free, and £4 after 11pm. Sat 30th Oct is
Ass-ylum, where DJ Darren & Dowzer prepare to
you poseurs!! And on Sun 31st Oct, the huge
stage! And with free entry for all you ‘little
monsters’ in costume, there’s no excuse to avoid
this monster bash!
Spoiling you even further for choice is
inventive games and mayhem. They have the
awesome Miss Scarlet Diamonte bringing the
scare into your Sat, on 30 th Oct - be afraid, be very
Alan Joy is continuing the re-release of his
old JOY mixes. Coming this month are the Sep,
Oct and Nov mixes from 1995 – 15 years since
their original release! Every month’s release
contains two CDs, mirroring the fact that the mixes
were made for both sides of a cassette. Retro
meets modern! Love it. Copies of these awesome
bangin’ mixes from this legendary DJ are available
at The Regent and Café Nom De Plum – a steal
for only £5. And all proceeds go to Hotscots FC,
Edinburgh’s gay friendly football team.
So, as most of you know, Ich liebe Roller
A sad moment now, with the mention of the
very sad passing of Scottie – very popular barman
and DJ at the Newtown Bar. He passed away
whilst on his holiday in Spain.
Scott McLaren first appeared on the scene in
April 1994, when QT’s (now The Street) opened its
doors in a previous straight bar. Over the years
Scottie was a familiar face on the scene and in
2007 he took up residence in the New Town Barnot
only organising its music and entertainment
(supplied by his own unique production company,
Spliffdog Music), but working behind the bar. A
unique person in pub circles, Scottie knew almost
every customer not only by drink, but by name,
with many a punter having a drink ready in the
time they made it from the door to the bar counter.
Over the last 3 years, Scottie worked tirelessly
through the New Town for their favourite charity
Waverley Care. Every Sunday during the Fringe,
Scottie ran the FUNdraiser cabaret showcases,
along with Scott Agnew, coercing and cajoling top
names, the likes of Stephen K Amos and Jo
Caulfield to give their time and energy FREE and to
appear in the NTB for Waverley. Over the last three
years more than £5k has been raised by these
events. Scott died suddenly in hospital in Alicante,
Spain on 30th Sep, aged 47, after taking ill on
holiday in Benidorm - ironically a holiday to help
him recover from the stresses of a hugely busy
Festival and Fringe. His funeral took place at
Warriston Crematorium on Wed 13th Oct and his
life was celebrated by more than 200 family and
friends. After the service everyone retired to the
Newtown Bar to be joined by more of his friends. A
special memorial event will be held in the near
future, in Scott’s name - rumour has it that
Topping and Butch have offered to headline a
special fundraising event in Scottie’s name. Watch
this space for details. Scott will be sorely missed
by his colleagues in the NTB and by his son David,
his mother and family. (Many kind thanks to
Jimmy from the Newtown for this moving tribute)
DAMNED IF WE DO - FUCKED IF WE DON'T...
In the last issue of ScotsGay, we published a piece by Anne McLaughlin with the word "fuck" in
it. This was changed from “****” without reference to the writer. Ms McLaughlin informs us that
"The word I was replacing was 'damn' but I thought even that might be offensive to some people
which is why I put the asterisks. I don't have a problem with other people swearing but it is not
really me.". ScotsGay finds the use of asterisks in this way insulting to the intelligence of our
readers. It can also give rise to confusion amongst readers (and the editor) as to the intention of
writers. If ScotsGay deems a word offensive, it simply isn't used!
NOSTRA CULPA
GLASGOW
Ladies and Gentleman once more I have
returned…….sorry for anyone expecting David
Beckham etc to pick up the column but
unfortunately for us all I’m far more accessible in
every way so nae luck chuck you shall just have to
make do and grin and bear it! Hope you are all in
fine fettle in this freezing weather and still making
it out and about, everywhere I’ve been has been
busy… full of bloody cold people but busy so
that’s a start! Sending a few words your way to get
you warmed up…..
This month there is a new night in Glasgow.
Bears Party, after running in Edinburgh for the last
three months is coming here! They will be at the
Basura Blanca Club underneath the Brunswick
Hotel in the city centre on Sat the 20th Nov from
10.30pm-2am and the event is in aid of Gay Men’s
Health so the organisers are making it free to get
in but if people could fling some money in the
bucket then it would be greatly received and wisely
used! Dance music from the eighties until the
noughties will be getting played with DJs Mishka
and DJ Corky. Not forgetting there will be a raffle
in aid of GMH so, you burly bunch of bears, go
and have some furry fun! It’s a great cause and
given the gossip from previous nights in
Edinburgh I’m sure it will be a great
night too.
Get the space filled in your calendars,
gents!
I was most delighted to receive a wee
electronic mail from the eternally lovely and
infamous Miss Cheri Treiffel this month to
fill me in on the latest goings on at
Scotland’s oldest gay bar, The Waterloo.
The venue is now under new management
and the team are, as always, working hard to
keep all punters entertained! Since the
aforementioned night won’t let me in, here’s
where I intend on heading which FYI means you
should be too!!!!!!!! Hallowe’en at the bar involves
free giveaways, best costume prizes, toffee apples
and big cash prizes on the Sat 30th Oct so that’s
sounding good and on Sat 5th Nov they’re holding
a charity fundraiser with all proceeds going to the
Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in memory
of one of their regulars, Peter Macdonald who
sadly died of cancer last year. The night which will
be attended by stars from
River City will be cabaret
filled and hosted by Miss
Cheri Treiffel herself (as if
after hearing all of that
you need any more
reasons to go….). No
excuses, everyone in
attendance please! Or it
shall be a case of SEE
ME! And ye ken what
I’m like with a drink in
me!
Also coming up on
their social calendar,
the Waterloo is still as
caring as ever and
running their annual
World AIDS Day
Fundraiser so they are
looking for donations
of quality items for
their raffle and
auction. As every
man and his dog knows this
is a cause personally very close to my own heart
and surely to heavens we can all find something
worth giving! My thinking cap is on and the old
man’s credit card is getting out!
Not forgetting every Sat night from 8pm
means it’s karaoke time and fret not their notorious
and ever popular Sundays with Cheri from 5pm is
still running with the picture quiz, ‘open my box’
(oooh err!), Play Ya Cards Right and Bingo and in
Miss Treiffel’s very own words “the usual shelf of
shite”... Actually LOL’d to myself there.
Speakeasy on John Street gets busier each
time I stagger in and no wonder, the drink prices
are AMAZING, hot staff, snazzy premises and
delicious food with entertainment of
some variety on every night of
the week. I personally like to
start my weekend off on a Thu
(usually ends on Thu also…..go
figure…..) because Queenie
presents: ‘Wannabe’ with
Vodka’n’mix/Btl Miller @ £1.25,
Jagerbombs £1.95! Then DJ
Shawn Roberts & Team TLC
present
‘Femmes:Hommes:Queens’. The
biggest and best gay Thu night in
town! The weekend kicks off there!
If you haven’t been before then pop
in, it’s a varied crowd in all aspects
and I think that’s part of what
makes it such a special and
individual venue.
Unfortunately all good things
must come to an end so here it is
folks… life is short so enjoy it! Even
when it’s your round at the bar and
I’m back on the champers! Hope to
see you all soon and as always thank
you for all comments and correspondence sent.
You lot aren’t half as bad as I make out! Muchos
fun and kisses. Ta ta for now x

Looking For Casual Relaxing Fun
With Younger Guy(s)
Just looking for fun with guy(s)
aged 16-26 - probably at my place
in Central Edinburgh. Nothing
complicated: love not required although
mutual respect is a must.
One off is good, so is longer term
fuck buddy. I'm mostly active but
can be versatile if that's what really
works for you. Safer fun only - no
barebacking. And a kiss or cuddle
can be just as good as (or better
than) anything else - so there are a
lot of options. What have you got
to lose by replying and seeing if
our needs/desires are compatible?
Other than your virginity which is
soon gone with this poof! Box
