keeps coming. Tackno will be taking over Elbow
Wendy for spine-chillingly cheesy tunes... And
dress to distress with Fancy ‘fearless’ Nancy and
A sad moment now, with the mention of the
very sad passing of Scottie – very popular barman
and DJ at the Newtown Bar. He passed away
whilst on his holiday in Spain.
Scott McLaren first appeared on the scene in
April 1994, when QT’s (now The Street) opened its
doors in a previous straight bar. Over the years
Scottie was a familiar face on the scene and in
2007 he took up residence in the New Town Barnot
only organising its music and entertainment
(supplied by his own unique production company,
Spliffdog Music), but working behind the bar. A
unique person in pub circles, Scottie knew almost
every customer not only by drink, but by name,
with many a punter having a drink ready in the
time they made it from the door to the bar counter.
Over the last 3 years, Scottie worked tirelessly
through the New Town for their favourite charity
Waverley Care. Every Sunday during the Fringe,
Scottie ran the FUNdraiser cabaret showcases,
along with Scott Agnew, coercing and cajoling top
names, the likes of Stephen K Amos and Jo
Caulfield to give their time and energy FREE and to
appear in the NTB for Waverley. Over the last three
years more than £5k has been raised by these
events. Scott died suddenly in hospital in Alicante,
Spain on 30th Sep, aged 47, after taking ill on
holiday in Benidorm - ironically a holiday to help
him recover from the stresses of a hugely busy
Festival and Fringe. His funeral took place at
Warriston Crematorium on Wed 13th Oct and his
life was celebrated by more than 200 family and
friends. After the service everyone retired to the
Newtown Bar to be joined by more of his friends. A
special memorial event will be held in the near
future, in Scott’s name - rumour has it that
Topping and Butch have offered to headline a
special fundraising event in Scottie’s name. Watch
this space for details. Scott will be sorely missed
by his colleagues in the NTB and by his son David,
his mother and family. (Many kind thanks to
Jimmy from the Newtown for this moving tribute)
