<strong>The</strong> <strong>System</strong> <strong>112A</strong> (Rascal) Project, formerly<br />
referred to as Project MX-776, was initlated by the<br />
All' Materiel Command, USAF, as a studyprogram for<br />
the ie'!elop~ent of a subsonic a1r-to-s'.!nace missile<br />
(ASM) carrying a special warhead. ThisJlrogram was<br />
amended to lndlJ.de a supersonic ASM; eventually, the<br />
subsonic missile phase was discontinued.<br />
In 1948, the project was dlvlded into twO concurrent<br />
programs: the X-9 Shrike and the GAM-63<br />
Rascal. Bell Aircraft Corporation, as the .prlme<br />
Weapon <strong>System</strong> Contractor, immediately Initlated the<br />
design, development, and fabrication of Shrike, a<br />
supersonic teat missile (small-scale version of the<br />
GAM-63) with a 50-mUe range andcapabl,,{cllrrylng<br />
a l000-pound special warhead. Work on the radarrelay<br />
