Preparing Next Steps: AFSIIC & A-FOURMI
• Current facilities are either very limited in spectroscopy (NSST
La Palma) or in spatial resolution (like THEMIS) and with low
duty cycle (AO ≤ 1% since cannot "lock" when poor r 0 )
• Next to come (either on-axis or off-axis design) are Gregor 1.5
m and NST 1.6 m but still limited for IR and coronal
observations; diffraction limited use is foreseen but with duty
cycle problem of AO activation at small r 0 (500 - 600 hours?)
• AFSIIC (Antarctica Facility for Solar Interferometric Imaging
& Coronagraphy) would outperforms them by diffraction
limited resolution @ high duty cycle, polarization, coronal
magnetic field measurements (IR) and coronagraphy
• Later will be ATST and, possibly, EST or A-FOURMI 4 m class
facility… Precursors/demonstrators will show the way
