Off-axis Telescopes: Corona & HAR • AFSIIC/FOURMI solar facility is introducing minimal compromises as compared to special purpose solar telescopes: AFSIIC will be able to study both the solar disk and the solar corona very near the limb AFSIIC will have a broad wavelength range coverage from near UV (0.38 µm) to IR (20 µm) AFSIIC's large collecting area means high S/N ratios and high sensitivity AFSIIC's very high resolution outperform all existing facilities allowing to follow dissipation near process scale with continuity, both with (very high resolution) and without AO (corona) AFSIIC's telescope polarization is small, constant (NO COUDÉ train, no angle variation) and hence largely correctable (< 1%) thanks to limited telescope opening
SOLARNET Off-Axis Approach • Off-axis design has advantages (stray-light, access to primary focus…) but added complexity and optical aberrations to compensate on relay optics. Trade-off during Assessment Phase for Space project but suitable for corona access on ground.
