<strong>Procedures</strong> to use <strong>Turnitin</strong> for Plagiarism Check - <strong>Student</strong><br />
Introduction<br />
This document contains the procedures to help you to get started with <strong>Turnitin</strong>. You need both<br />
the class ID and class enrollment password given by the Suject Coordinator/Lecturer to access<br />
<strong>Turnitin</strong>.<br />
Step 1 - Creating a User Pr<strong>of</strong>ile and Enroll in a Class<br />
Creating a User Pr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />
1. To register and create a user pr<strong>of</strong>ile, go to www.turnitin.com and select your language from<br />
the drop down menu.<br />
2. Click on the "Create Account" link on the homepage and the Create a User Pr<strong>of</strong>ile page<br />
will open.<br />
3. Fill in the required information in the new user pr<strong>of</strong>ile form.<br />
Enroll in a Class<br />
In order to complete a pr<strong>of</strong>ile, you must have a Class ID and an enrollment password given by<br />
your Subject Coordinator/Lecturer.<br />
1. Click on the “Enroll in a class” tab on the student homepage.<br />
2. Enter the class ID and enrollment password.<br />
3. Click submit to enroll in the class. The class is then added to the student hompage.<br />
Step 2 – Open a Class Portfolio<br />
The list <strong>of</strong> class is shown up on your homepage.<br />
1. Click on the name <strong>of</strong> class to open your class portfolio.<br />
Step 3 – Submit your Assignment<br />
The assignments created by your Subject Coordinator/Lecturer is shown up on the class<br />
portfolio.<br />
1. Click on the “Submit” button and hte paper submission page will open.<br />
2. At the “Choose a paper submission method:” pull down menu, select "Single file<br />
upload" method.<br />
3. Enter your name and submission title.<br />
4. Click on the “Browse” button and select the file to upload.<br />
5. Click on “Upload” button to upload the file.<br />
6. Review the preview panel <strong>of</strong> the “text only” version <strong>of</strong> the file being uploaded.<br />
7. Confirm it is the correct version <strong>of</strong> the file to be submitted.<br />
8. Click on “Submit” button to complete the submission process.<br />
9. After the submission, a digital receipt is displayed on the screen. Save the digital receipt and<br />
the paper ID as the pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> a complete submission. A copy <strong>of</strong> the digital receipt is also sent<br />
to your email address used to register your user pr<strong>of</strong>ile.<br />

Note:<br />
The following file formats are accepted for submissions to <strong>Turnitin</strong>:<br />
MS Word, WordPerfect, RTF, PDF, PostScript, HTML, plain text (.txt). The file size is limited<br />
to 20 MB.<br />
You can only submit a work on the start date and before the due date.<br />
Step 4 – Viewing the Originality Report<br />
Return to your class portfolio and follow the step below to view the Originality Reports.<br />
1. Click on the class name.<br />
2. Click on the “Originality Report” icon to the right <strong>of</strong> the assignment to view the report.<br />
Notes (Taken from <strong>Turnitin</strong> website):<br />
If you see the text “Not Available” instead <strong>of</strong> the “Originality Report” icon, you may contact<br />
your Subject Coordinator/Lecturer to enable the option <strong>of</strong> the student ability to view the<br />
Originality report.<br />
The Originality Report will open in a new window called the Document Viewer.<br />
The Document Viewer allows instructors to access each <strong>Turnitin</strong> product in one location and<br />
view all the products simultaneously as layers.<br />
All the top sources found to match the paper submission are in the sidebar to the right <strong>of</strong> the<br />
paper contents. Top sources are the sources that have the closest match (most matching<br />
words without variation) to the document's text.<br />
To view all underlying sources for a top source hover the cursor over the source and click on<br />
the arrow icon. The overlapping sources are listed below the top source.<br />
To exclude a source from the Match Breakdown list click on the "Select Sources to be<br />
Excluded" button at the bottom <strong>of</strong> the source list.<br />
Click on the check box next to all the sources you would like to exclude.<br />
Once you have selected all the sources to exclude, click on the "Exclude (#)" button at the<br />
bottom <strong>of</strong> the Match Breakdown list. If the sources that were excluded affect the<br />
Similarity Index it will recalculate and display a new percentage <strong>of</strong> matching content.<br />
