Procedures to use Turnitin for Plagiarism Check - Student
Introduction
This document contains the procedures to help you to get started with Turnitin. You need both
the class ID and class enrollment password given by the Suject Coordinator/Lecturer to access
Turnitin.
Step 1 - Creating a User Profile and Enroll in a Class
Creating a User Profile
1. To register and create a user profile, go to www.turnitin.com and select your language from
the drop down menu.
2. Click on the "Create Account" link on the homepage and the Create a User Profile page
will open.
3. Fill in the required information in the new user profile form.
Enroll in a Class
In order to complete a profile, you must have a Class ID and an enrollment password given by
your Subject Coordinator/Lecturer.
1. Click on the “Enroll in a class” tab on the student homepage.
2. Enter the class ID and enrollment password.
3. Click submit to enroll in the class. The class is then added to the student hompage.
Step 2 – Open a Class Portfolio
The list of class is shown up on your homepage.
1. Click on the name of class to open your class portfolio.
Step 3 – Submit your Assignment
The assignments created by your Subject Coordinator/Lecturer is shown up on the class
portfolio.
1. Click on the “Submit” button and hte paper submission page will open.
2. At the “Choose a paper submission method:” pull down menu, select "Single file
upload" method.
3. Enter your name and submission title.
4. Click on the “Browse” button and select the file to upload.
5. Click on “Upload” button to upload the file.
6. Review the preview panel of the “text only” version of the file being uploaded.
7. Confirm it is the correct version of the file to be submitted.
8. Click on “Submit” button to complete the submission process.
9. After the submission, a digital receipt is displayed on the screen. Save the digital receipt and
the paper ID as the proof of a complete submission. A copy of the digital receipt is also sent
to your email address used to register your user profile.

Note:
The following file formats are accepted for submissions to Turnitin:
MS Word, WordPerfect, RTF, PDF, PostScript, HTML, plain text (.txt). The file size is limited
to 20 MB.
You can only submit a work on the start date and before the due date.
Step 4 – Viewing the Originality Report
Return to your class portfolio and follow the step below to view the Originality Reports.
1. Click on the class name.
2. Click on the “Originality Report” icon to the right of the assignment to view the report.
Notes (Taken from Turnitin website):
If you see the text “Not Available” instead of the “Originality Report” icon, you may contact
your Subject Coordinator/Lecturer to enable the option of the student ability to view the
Originality report.
The Originality Report will open in a new window called the Document Viewer.
The Document Viewer allows instructors to access each Turnitin product in one location and
view all the products simultaneously as layers.
All the top sources found to match the paper submission are in the sidebar to the right of the
paper contents. Top sources are the sources that have the closest match (most matching
words without variation) to the document's text.
To view all underlying sources for a top source hover the cursor over the source and click on
the arrow icon. The overlapping sources are listed below the top source.
To exclude a source from the Match Breakdown list click on the "Select Sources to be
Excluded" button at the bottom of the source list.
Click on the check box next to all the sources you would like to exclude.
Once you have selected all the sources to exclude, click on the "Exclude (#)" button at the
bottom of the Match Breakdown list. If the sources that were excluded affect the
Similarity Index it will recalculate and display a new percentage of matching content.
