CHENNAI
February and March are months during
which the activity levels for everyone is quite
intense. The budget is announced on the
last day of February and though there are
indicators about how it would look like, the
FM can always spring a surprise or two. As
HR professionals, it is also a very hectic time
for all of us since the appraisal and
compensation review in most of our
organizations happens during this period.
Our Chennai chapter has also decided to
get busy in March by organizing two back
to back meetings.
The budget and its provisions are relevant
and important to us. While there are a few
things that we would understand prima facie,
there are deeper and more insightful things
about the budget that we would like to know.
In order to demystify the budget and provide
us an overview of its relevant provisions we
have invited Vidya Nagarajan, Sr Manager
from Ernst & Young to share perspectives
and answer all our queries. This meeting
takes place on Friday, 2nd March at Hotel
Star City, Bazullah Road, T.Nagar.
In the last decade or so, the subject of
managing compensation has become quite
a challenge for HR folks and inspite of
having done it over the years and gained
valuable knowledge, the subject still remains
as elusive as it has always been. There are
several questions for which there are no
obvious answers - What is pay for
Performance? How relevant is it today? How
important is compensation in the overall
retention strategy? What is an ideal
compensation structure if ever there is one?
If these and other related questions were
asked to a cross section of the HR
community, chances are that opinions and
perspectives could be as diverse as chalk
and cheese. This is not about right or wrong
but it has more to do with context and
relevance. We therefore decided to ask the
subject matter experts.
On Friday, 9th March we have invited
Sabitha, Regional Director, Cerebrus
Consultants and Gangapriya, Business
Leader of the Human Capital Product
Solution's business of Mercer to share their
insights on Compensation and Benefits.
Both Sabitha and Gangapriya bring a wealth
of knowledge and experience having worked
with a diverse set of Indian and Multi national
organizations across multiple industry
segments. The venue for this meeting would
be Hotel Savera, Radhakrishnan Road.
The exclusive quiz for HR professionals was
conducted on 17th February with quite a
number of teams participating. It was
exciting to see HR folks with such a
tremendous flair and enthusiasm for
quizzing. The Quizmaster R Shantaram did
a terrific job in sustaining interest and
momentum throughout the program. The
winning teams would be honored during one
of these meetings. We would like to thank
the teams and their organizations for their
interest and participation.
DELHI
January 24th was a special day indeed, the
4th Anniversary of Beyond Business, an
initiative of the NHRDN Delhi Chapter. Our
Special Event was held on this day to
celebrate the anniversary and journey of
Beyond Business, which aligns with the
Network's objective of Capacity Building,
and provides a platform for our members to
participate in capacity building for NPO's.
The evening began with an introductory note
from Pritha Dutt, one of the founding
members and facilitator of Beyond Business.
Her brief snapshot ran through the
achievements of Beyond Business in
volunteer programs, skill building and
support to NGO's through fund raising,
functional training, capacity building and
coaching.
This was followed by the formal signing of a
TOR between Delhi Chapter and iVolunteer,
for a joint program on employee
volunteering. Pankaj Bansal, Vice President,
Delhi Chapter and Rahul Nainwal, Director,
iVolunteer, enforced the TOR. ivolunteer, an
NPO that connects and places volunteers
where they are best suited, started as an
entrepreneurial initiative in 2000, and
currently places 80-120 volunteers per
month. It has 100 NGO and 4 corporate
partners. This eminent signup will lead to
even closer and more fruitful relationship
between the members of Delhi Chapter and
the NPO sector.
Following the signup, we moved into the next
session, "Mind of a Strategist", a
conversation conducted by Abhijit Bhaduri,
HR Director, Frito-Lay (Pepsico India
Holdings), with John Lincoln, Head
Segments (Mobile, Fixed & Enterprise),
Bharti Airtel Ltd. This was the second of a
series of conversations with CEOs & Heads.
Abhijit has had a long career, spanning two
decades across diverse industries and
multiple countries, and with his varied
interests is a man of many facets. He has
authored several books and has also been
a popular radio voice in India and abroad.
Our special guest for the evening, John
Lincoln, too has had a long and
distinguished career. He has over 17 years
of rich global telecom experience across
USA, Japan & Europe in consumer and
enterprise marketing, strategy and &
operational management in both fixed and
mobile services.
John had many insights to offer the HR
community, as the topics ranged from
market segmentation to recruitment and
customer service. He talked about market
segmentation being used for understanding
how to acquire new customers and be able
to retain the old ones. Today the market is
extremely big and varied, and every
segment has a different set of needs. John
