1.0 INTRODUCTION Lochside is a residential area situated to the North East of Ayr town centre. The area is bound by Whitletts Road to the South, one of the main roads serving the town, the freight railway to the North, Somerset Park to the West and the Heathfield industrial area to the East . The area is predominately formed by extensive numbers of council housing with associated schools, recreation and retail properties. The council housing is predominately of mid 20th century two storey cottage flats with some 1970’s four storey maisonette blocks. The residents of the area are to an extent disadvantaged both socially and economically. This combined with the deteriorating condition of many of the houses has led to a decline in the quality of environment for the residents. South Ayrshire Council have developed a programme of housing improvements across the area with upgrades to internal and external building fabric, selective demolition and new build replacement of houses and environmental improvements. WHITLETTS ROAD The purpose of this study is to continue this programme of improvements by addressing the area to the northern edge of the estate. The principal issues to be addressed concern - the potential replacement of the substandard four storey maisonette blocks on Ferguson Street and Sloan Street - proposed alternative residential use of the derelict former greyhound stadium - improvements to the recreational amenity for the area in particular upgrading the open grassland between the James Brown Avenue housing and the Whitfield Drive industrial units. Lochside location plan with study area shaded The study will set out an outline design approach to the residential properties, the infrastructure related to this and the potential for the upgrade of recreational amenity for the residents. The outline design will define a potential housing mix, related open spaces and the estimated costs associated with this.
