Having dominated the spring with hits
like "K-9," "The Dream Team" and
"Field of Dreams," Universal Pictures
has announced it upcoming production
slate for the next 30 months. Movies
scheduled to go into production within
the next year include "Henry and
June," the first project from director
Philip Kaufman since the critically hailed
"The Unbearable Lightness of Being;"
"The Dark Man," a thriller from goremaster
Sam Raimi; and "Havana," a drama
which is expected to reunite "Out of
Africa" director Sydney Pollack with Robert
Redford. In 1990, Universal expects to
have 24 releases, three times the number
it had in 1987.
In a major step toward rejuvenation following
its pending sale to Qintex Entertainment,
MGM/UA has named Christopher
Bomba vice president of production
for the studio Bomba, who started with
the company in the story department in
1980, will report directly to John Goldwyn,
president of production.
Headstrong writer-director Oliver
Stone ("Platoon," "Talk Radio") has
signed a first-look deal with Carolco Pictures,
which heretofore has primarily
done big-budget action flicks like "Rambo"
and "Red Heat." Stone's immediate
concerns, however, are the release of
"Bom on the Fourth of July" for Universal,
and the production of "Evita" for the
Weintraub Entertainment Group.
Rafaella De Laurentiis, the ineffective
head of production for her father's
doomed DEO, has signed a two-year, first-
for the studio under the actor's Tig Production
Company banner.
Dennis Quaid has also signed a production
pact with Orion, which recently
released the disappointing "Great Balls of
Fire." The first film to go into production
under the long-term, non-exclusive pact
will be "22-Cent Romance," a romantic
comedy about a woman who receives a
strange visit from her pen pal.
PERSONNEL
New Line Cinema has promoted
Theresa Collins to senior vice president
of advertising and Alison Emilio to senior
vice president of marketing and publicity.
Collins, with the company for four
years, will now handle all areas of national,
co-op and corporate advertising. Emilio
will be creating and overseeing national
and field publicity, as well as being
involved in the formulation of national
promotions.
ACQUISITIONS
Cinecom: "Queen of Hearts," a drama
from Jon Amiel, the director of the
acclaimed BBC series, "The Singing Detective."
The film, which follows 20 years
in the life of an Italian family living in
London, will open in limited markets this
fall.
Fries Entertainment: "Easy
Wheels," a racing comedy starring Paul
Le Mat ("Melvin and Howard") and Eileen
Davidson.
Orion Classics: "Mystery Train," the
new film from "Stranger Then Paradise"
director Jim Jarmusch. Winner of the
prize for Best Artistic Contribution at this
year's Canne Film Festival, the film consists
of three separate stories that deal
with life on the road. The movie, which is
Jarmusch's first color feature, will open
in New York in November and a month
later in Los Angeles.
