www.webstertimes.net Friday, April 16, 2010 • THE WEBSTER TIMES • 15 Little Leagues to kick off season this weekend BALL continued from page 1 baseball fields for opening ceremonies. On Sunday, April 18, both Webster and Oxford will hold their annual parades, with Webster’s parade starting at 11:30 a.m. The meeting place for teams will be Chet’s Smoke Shop on Main Street and the parade will finish at the Edward T. McGerary Memorial Field on Little League Lane. Oxford’s Opening Day festivities will wrap up the weekend with a parade starting at 11:30 a.m. at the American Legion Hall, 227 Main St., and Opening Day speeches will take place at the Oxford Community Center, 4 Maple Road, and the first pitch of the season will happen at Stanley Johnson Field on Route 12 in North Oxford. Oxford Little League Board member Steve Horgan said he has been involved with the organization for the last 16 years. He said as with each new season, there comes the excitement of playing the game and seeing the players out on the field enjoying the sport he and other members hold so close to their hearts. “I look forward to success for this season,” said Horgan. He added that this year he is excited to see new field lights go up on the Greenbrier Fields, which will benefit the players in the 14- to 16-year-old bracket. “The poles are up and we are just waiting for National Grid to turn them on,” said Horgan. He said the project, which was funded by the town, came in at approximately $130,000. Horgan said at the end of March, he and other officials were concerned that this age group might not even be able to play due to heavy flooding that took place during the Players on the Indians, a Webster Little League Major League team, practice Wednesday, April 7. OXFORD — Aquarion Water Company has begun cleaning water mains in Oxford beginning Monday, April 5, and continuing through May, so we can ensure that you continue to receive the highest quality water. Work will take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Crews will start at the Auburn town line and work toward the Webster town line. Signs will be posted in each area when work is about to begin. During this time, you might notice some discoloration spring’s most recent rainstorms. “Those fields are right in Oxford’s flood zone,” said Horgan. He said the good news is that the fields are drying out and ready for the kids to take the field on Sunday. Horgan said he is pleased with the current success of the T-ball team, which is now three years old. He said it is reassuring to see the number of children participating go up each year with 25 the first year and now 48 playing this season. A new feature the Oxford Little League is offering this year is the Challenger League, which according to Horgan, can be found district wide, where children with developmental disabilities can participate in sports on their own team. “It is a great program,” said Horgan. “The parents are very happy and we have about five to six kids already signed up.” In Webster, Little League Players Agent John McLaughlin said this year the children are just as happy to participate as last year, even though there are less of them signed up than in years past. “This year should go great,” said McLaughlin. “Even though we are 30 kids shorter than last year.” He said he believes the drop in kids is due to the state of the economy, but is still disheartened to see the fall in the number of players. Having grown up in Webster and having participated in Little League from the age of five until high school, McLaughlin said helping out with the organization was something he fell into naturally. “I have been the agent for about four years and my dad was the one who actually brought up the idea,” said McLaughlin. “I don’t have kids, but when I got into it I ended up loving it.” McLaughlin also coaches a Major League team of 10 to 12 year olds called the Indians, and he said since the first practice the kids have been chomping at the bit to play a game. “They are always excited as soon as practice comes,” said McLaughlin. Turning an eye to Dudley, Umpire Director Cynthia Howard said she has loved the experience she has had with the group for the last 19 years. “This will be my first year as the umpire director,” said Howard. “My husband Dan did it last year and now he is one of the coaches.” She said it was nice to make the hobby a family affair and hopes that more families in the area will take that into consideration when they look for an after-school outlet for in your water. This results from the temporary disturbance of the water flow, which disrupts naturally occurring minerals, such as iron and manganese, that settle in water mains. You may want to store tap water in the refrigerator for drinking and cooking. And, if your water becomes discolored, delay washing clothes until it is clear. Once the work in your area of town has been completed, running cold water from the bathtub tap will clear Courtesy photos Oxford Little Leaguers were greeted with a disheartening site at the end of March when the Greenbriar Little League fields were found flooded from the large amount of rain that fell during the month. Oxford water mains to be cleaned their children. “I love being involved [with the Little League],” said Howard. “It is something that is local and easy access and gets kids out there exercising and living healthy.” She said she wants both boys and girls to get involved with the league and that it is a good way for them to work together as a team, make friends and find an interest that they can carry with them into middle and high school. “It is good to see them work together in a team,” said Howard.
