Governor releases $155 million for local road projects
BOSTON — Rep. Paul
Kujawski, D-Webster, has
announced that Governor Deval
Patrick has notified cities and
towns they will receive $155 million
in state Chapter 90 funds to
rebuild and repair local roads
and bridges this year.
This significant capital investment
will create construction
jobs, improve transportation and
public safety and encourage longterm
economic development
across the Commonwealth.
“This record level of investment
in repairing town and city
roads and bridges represents an
historic and timely boost for
communities across the
Commonwealth,” said Patrick.
“When combined with our
unprecedented Accelerated
Bridge Program and federal
stimulus projects, we are putting
thousands of people to work and
jumpstarting our economy as we
rebuild our transportation infrastructure.”
“Chapter 90 funds are essential
towards the repair and enhancement
of local infrastructure
needs,” said Kujawski.
“Communities with tight budget,
use the section 90 funds to make
transportation safe and efficient.”
Each city and town will receive
an increase in Chapter 90 funding
for the fiscal year beginning
on July 1, 2010, compared to the
previous year, with funds allocated
using a longstanding formula
based upon community road
miles, population and employment.
This investment represents
a $5 million increase over
2009 and is part of the Patrick-
Murray Administration’s record
level of investment in the
Commonwealth’s aging infrastructure.
This year alone, officials
project the Administration
has funded an estimated $1.085
billion in Accelerated Bridge
Volunteers needed for Relay for Life
AUBURN — The American Cancer Society
Relay For Life® of Central South County is
seeking volunteers — walkers, cancer survivors,
caregivers, community leaders, anyone
wanting to make a difference — to organize
and recruit fundraising teams, garner
community support, coordinate logistics,
seek refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment
and lend a hand to ensure the success of
the 2010 event.
Relay For Life events are held overnight as
individuals and teams camp out at an athletic
track, park or other gathering area, with
the goal of keeping at least one team member
on the track or pathway at all times throughout
the evening. Teams do most of their
fundraising prior to the event, but some
teams also hold creative fundraisers at their
campsites during Relay. Relay brings together
friends, families, businesses, hospitals,
schools, faith-based groups — people from all
walks of life — all aimed at celebrating the
lives of those who have had cancer, remembering
those lost, and fighting back against
the disease.
and supporting its efforts to create a world
with less cancer and more birthdays.
Volunteers and participants who are willing
to give their time and energy to this exciting
event are making a commitment to let the
local community know that cancer can be
defeated.
Although Relay For Life of Central South
County includes the communities of
Auburn, Millbury, Leicester and Oxford, we
welcome volunteers from all towns and communities
to participate in our event.
If you would like to join the Relay For Life
of Central South County as a volunteer or
team participant, call the American Cancer
Society at (508) 270-4600 or visit www.relayforlife.org.
The American Cancer Society combines an
unyielding passion with nearly a century of
experience to save lives and end suffering
from cancer. As a global grassroots force of
more than 3 million volunteers, we fight for
every birthday threatened by every cancer in
WEBSTER — As part of their community policing efforts, the Webster
Police Department took several students to opening day of the Pawtucket
Red Sox Thursday, April 8. Pictured, Chief Timothy Bent, Officer Cindy
Johnson and the students. Linda Perno of AA Transportation donated a bus
and driver for the event.
Program and American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act
projects.
“For far too long, our roads and
bridges were overlooked but our
administration is committed to
improving our infrastructure,”
said Lieutenant Governor
Timothy Murray. “We are
addressing deferred maintenance
by responsibly applying
funds to invest in our roads and
bridges in cities and towns
across the Commonwealth.”
Chapter 90 funds are allocated
as part of the three-year
Transportation Bond Bills
approved by the Legislature in
2008. The funds may be used for
road, bridge and multi-use path
projects and related needs.
The town of Douglas will
receive $278,952, Dudley $325,857,
Oxford $388,491, Uxbridge
$367,190 and Webster $377,842
respectively.
“Our municipalities have critical
street and bridge improvement
and safety projects ready to
go and waiting for these funds,
and MassDOT is working closely
with our local partners on
streamlined project design and
construction to put these dollars
to use quickly and wisely,” said
Transportation Secretary and
CEO Jeffrey Mullan.
“This important investment in
our communities lies within the
confines of our 5-year capital
plan, a responsible blueprint for
the
Patrick-Murray
Administration’s strategic
investments,”
said
Administration and Finance
Secretary Jay Gonzalez. “These
road and bridge repair projects
are important to communities
and important to the economic
strength of the Commonwealth.”
every community. We save lives by helping
people stay well by preventing cancer or
detecting it early; by helping people get well
by being there for them during and after a
cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through
investment in groundbreaking discovery;
and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers
to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying
communities worldwide to join the fight.
As the nation’s largest non-governmental
investor in cancer research, contributing
about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know
about cancer into what we do. As a result,
more than 11 million people in America who
have had cancer and countless more who
have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays
this year. To learn more about us or to get
