THIS WEEK’S COVER
Launceston’s Will Campbell breaks
Photographer: Steve Youd.
from the editor
The first Super Saturday of the 2010
Wrest Point State League was a great
success last week and Round 4 will
dish up the same for footy fans.
The RECORD’s reading highlight is the
‘View From Here’ which analyses this
week’s games which are pivotal to the
fortunes of all Clubs. I will be amazed
if we can find more than a handful of
‘Tassie Tipsters’ who can predict all
winners this weekend.
That said it is the time for bold
predictions. The clash between North
Hobart and Clarence is sure to preview
two September combatants. Will they
be this year’s Grand Finalists? Well
they are the most dominant Clubs in
Tasmania achieving premierships on
average every 4 years or less.
Finally, the footy this Saturday preludes
a day of reflection on ANZAC Day.
Australian football has many members
who have given great service in times
of war. Many have paid the ultimate
sacrifice so we can play the game and
enjoy the other freedoms of our great
country Australia. Lest We Forget.
Have a great ANZAC weekend at the
footy.
V I E W F R O M H E R E | Just what the competition ordered!
Round 4 of AFL Tasmania’s 2010 Wrest Point
State League competition is arguably the most
exciting single round of the competition since
its inception in 2009.
All five Saturday games this weekend are vital for
a range of different reasons:
Burnie versus Glenorchy at West Park.
A Burnie victory would result in the Dockers
having won three and lost just one game after
the first month of the 2010 season. What a
fantastic effort that would be considering the
staggering number of experienced and senior
quality players that left the Dockers following the
2009 season.
A Burnie victory would also mean that Glenorchy,
the team that only lost the inaugural 2009 TSL
grand final by just six points, would be sitting on
only one win after four games of the 2010 season.
Launceston versus Devonport at Windsor Park.
A Launceston victory would have the Blues
nicely positioned with three wins and one loss.
However, this result would also mean that the
Devonport Magpies would be winless after the
first month of the 2010 season. A month ago
many predicted the North West based Magpies
to give the flag a real shake in 2010.
South L’ton versus North L’ton at Youngtown.
A victory by the Northern Bombers would have
them sitting with three wins and just one loss.
While a Bulldogs victory would have both teams
sitting with two wins and two losses after the first
month of competition. The Bulldogs would probably
be satisfied with this scenario given they have a
young and inexperienced senior list in 2010.
Lauderdale versus Hobart at the newly
developed Lauderdale Oval.
A victory by the Southern Bombers would have
them sitting on two wins and two losses, with
one of the losses being by just four points in
round one against South Launceston. This
scenario would be a good start to the season for
Lauderdale; however, it would be a disastrous
month of football for the Hobart Tigers, i.e. no
wins and four losses.
Clarence versus North Hobart at Bellerive Oval.
A top of the table clash between the only two
unbeaten teams in the 2010 TSL competition!
The match of the season to date and victory
by either team would be a huge psychological
boost and would provide the winner with great
confidence for the rest of the 2010 season.
Won’t it be terrific when the TSL competition
develops to a point whereby each and every week
we have a similar scenario to round 4 of 2010?
Five great games and the result of all five games
is anyone’s guess!
The Langmaid / Lee Room and the Bourn
Players, coaches and officials will represent
the football club at the 11 am Anzac Day
winning the NWFU premiership, the entire
Burnie Football Club team enlisted together
to serve in World War 2. One player, Lenny
not return.
The club continued its good run of success
Brett Geappen continued his good form
equal leader in the RACT player of the year
award and leads the goal kicking award in the
Great to see Brennan Savage play so well and
we have been fortunate to recruit him this
year. Likewise Jackson O’Brien returned to
the senior side, leading us as captain for the
day in the absence of our injured skipper Nick
Paine, and also playing very well.
The next two weeks we play night games at
Bellerive. This week against the undefeated
North Hobart and we are looking forward to a
good contest.
The following week is on Friday night against
Lauderdale commencing at 6.00pm.
The reserves and under eighteens play
the following day at Bellerive with under
President: Steve Daley
Senior Coach: Errol Bourne
DEVONPORT
Congratulations to all teams for your effort last
week against a formidable North Hobart. Sadly
though, our U18’s were the only team to be
victorious on the day. All the boys are putting
in the hard yards on the training track but it’s
not all coming together at the moment. Our
vast pool of talent and experienced players will
show their stuff in the coming weeks.
Congratulations must go to our loyal band
of volunteers who turn out on game day and
through the week. The club and the football
public thank you for your efforts.
Thanks to our Major sponsor ‘Total
Performance Sports’ and our U18’s Naming
Rights sponsor ‘Cambridge Services’ for their
support in 2010.
We also thank Community Sponsors such as
Terry and Joan Matthews and Lance and Jan
Cox (master fish & chip makers) who have all
supported the club for decades in many ways.
Good luck to all the teams today. Launceston
at home is always a formidable task, but
with your support our boys can rally to the
challenge and come away winners.
Flag Presentation
Last Sunday a unique piece of history was
created at the TCA Ground when the Club
and the U15 team were presented with the
U14 Premiership Flag won in 2009. Coach
Tony Rosendale, the team and staff are to be
congratulated on an outstanding season. This
team is the first to win a premiership at this
level and will be the only team to do so wearing
the Lions’ colours. Congratulations, and the
boys celebrated the day by defeating Cygnet
and enjoying a “hot snag” after the game!
The annual Black & Gold Ball is to be held on
Saturday 5 June at Hadley’s Hotel after our
LAUDERDALE
The Lauderdale Football Club have ticked
another box in our Tasmanian Statewide
League history by delivering Tasmania’s
newest AFL sized ground.
The Clarence City Council and Spectran are to
be congratulated for their efforts.
Our next mission is to deliver one or more
extra playing surfaces to support our current
ground, as our player and team numbers
have undergone their single biggest increase
in many years over this last off season.
Now that the state political unrest is
settled, we hope that our incoming Franklin
representatives look at our developing club
in a positive manner as the Labor leader had
done to established clubs prior to the election.
We wish to acknowledge partners to our
Club, including George Self Real Estate and
MG Robert Plumbing (Aussie Waste) who join
household names: Deaks Fine Foods (Primo
about to sink their teeth into the upgrade of
the toilets inside the clubrooms.
Also, there will be added comfort with the
NORTH L’TON
A great team effort last week resulted in a
fantastic win against Burnie. The boys were on
a high following their close win the week before
against Devonport, and with Burnie’s great
start to the season, the boys knew they had to
go in hard.
Well done everyone, and a great result for
Shane Wager’s 100th game.
This week we travel to South Launceston. This
game is always the hardest to predict of the
season. The historic rivalry between the two
Clubs ensures that both teams will be playing
at their best, in what is always a fierce and
competitive game.
Next week we travel to Glenorchy for our first
game in the South. Come along and support
the teams.
Thank you to everyone who sold and/or
purchased tickets in the Club’s recent Petrol
raffle. Prize winners were :
1st – John Cartwright;
three sides looking for their second win of
the season.
Congratulations must go to our reserves for
Blues last week for their first win of the year.
A reminder to all players, members and
supporters that we have our “Bulldog Cup”
O U R G R E AT G A M E | Tasmania’s first great club
North Hobart Football Club was founded in
1881 at St Kilda House in Macquarie Street
Hobart by a group of interested men who had
been playing 12 a side pick-up matches in
Smith’s dairy paddock at the domain end of
Campbell Street in North Hobart.
The Committee of the Club, which was called
North Hobart in recognition of the recently
formed township. decided to affiliate with the
Southern Tasmanian Football Association and
enter the Junior division, which comprised 12
teams. The first match was played by the club on
the 4 June 1881 against City (of Hobart). The
colours of red and blue of various shades have
been used continuously since that game.
North Hobart has won a Tasmanian record total
of 28 senior premierships – the first being in
1902 and the most recent in 2003 by a record
margin of 110 points against Hobart. The
Robins, as North Hobart were called before
becoming the Demons in the late 1960s, were
also in the record books in the 1930s and
1940s by playing in 15 consecutive grand finals.
Many of the North Hobart Football Club
players and officials have achieved notable
success in business, professional, sporting
or public life. These include IXL founder, Sir
Henry Jones, Rhodes Scholars Gollan Lewis
and John Ingles, former Premiers of Tasmania,
Sir Robert Cosgrove and Jim Bacon, and the
former President of the Legislative Council, Ray
Bailey. Life member and former Club Chairman,
Associate Professor Dr Bruce Felmingham,
2003 Archibald Prize winner artist Geoff Dyer
and senior VFL/AFL football journalists Michael
Sheahan and Geoff Poulter have all had an
association with the club.
The Club has also provided a pathway for a total
of 54 players who have played VFL/AFL football.
These include champion goal kicker Alan Rait;
Peter Jones who played 249 senior games for
Carlton and later coached that club and Sydney
Swans 2005 premiership player Paul Williams.
More recently, the 2006 draft saw 17 year old
forward Colin Garland selected by Melbourne.
Garland made his AFL debut in May 2007. He
was nominated as an AFL Rising Star in 2008.
In 2008 Liam Jones was drafted by the Western
Bulldogs. In addition Tom Allwright was drafted to
Geelong as a rookie. In the 2009 draft talented
utility Marcus Davies was selected by Carlton.
The club had 6 players named in the Tasmanian
Team of the Century in 2004, including Roy
Cazaly (Coach), John Leedham (v/capt), Peter
Jones, Daryn Cresswell, Len Pye and Paul
Williams. As well, in 2005 North Hobart became
the first great football club and a further 34
people who have been associated with the
club have also been inducted to the Tasmanian
Football Hall of Fame.
G R A S S R O O T S | Not just for the boys
The Tasmanian Women’s Football League
(TASWAFL) was formed in Tasmania in 2007, when
Clarence Football Cub and Launceston Football
Club, became the first clubs in Tasmania to
establish a Women’s Football Team.
The first game for 2007 was an exhibition game
between the two sides, at the half time break of the
Tasmanian Devils VFL game on the 30th June at
Bellerive Oval.
It was a good display of women’s football, with
all those involved surprised by the high skill level
of the game, considering many girls had never
played before. The remainder of the 2007 season
consisted of another 4 games played between
Clarence and Launceston.
In 2008, the Launceston and Clarence Women’s
Football teams played each other in an informal
6 game roster, having 3 homes games each with
all games displaying a high level of skill and both
teams’ further developing skills learnt in the
previous season.
A highlight in progress during the 2008 season was
the introduction of the first annual gala day, held
in September at Aurora Stadium. Clarence and
Launceston were joined by two new and emerging
teams – Lindisfarne from the South and East
Devonport from the North West. Clarence and
Launceston showcased a high level of experience
on the field, while new teams, Lindisfarne and
East Devonport displayed an excellent skills base
and determination to be competitive in Tasmanian
women’s football.
In 2009, with the support of the East Devonport
Football Club the East Devonport Swanettes
became the third team to join the competition,
which cemented the future of the competition as a
state wide league.
The league itself developed considerably during
2009 with a formalized roster expanding the
competition to a 12 game fixture with a Grand Final
for the top two teams. Official umpires were used
at most games. The Footy Web system and a player
report process was introduced, and the league was
given an official logo.
By the end of 2009, a fourth team, the Spreyton
Ea-Girls, supported by the Spreyton Football Club,
were already in training and registered for inclusion
in the 2010 roster. There were also rumours of
other teams forming on the North West Coast and
in Hobart.
Six teams now form part of the Tasmanian
Women’s Football League with the inclusion of
North Hobart Women’s Football Team and Yeoman
Women’s Football Team, in the 2010 season.
Female participation in Tasmania has increased
by 300% since the end of 2007, and continues to
grow, showing that AFL is no
longer a game for the boys.
YOUNG GUNS | Development series kicks off
The TSL Development Series is on again with
the southern U14 and U15 series held over the
Easter Break.
The Development Series represents the
first stage of the Talented Player Pathway in
Tasmania, offering an opportunity for young
players from youth clubs around the state to
come together and play for the State League
club in their zone.
The Development Series exists for two years
in the Under 14 and Under 15 age groups
and culminates in Southern and Northern
representative teams that are selected to play
for the Tastel Community Telco Intrastate Cup in
the September holidays.
Club Development Officers at TSL Clubs
liaise with youth clubs in the lead up to the
Development Series to produce squads.
Games are observed by State Academy Coaches
Mathew Armstrong and Adam Sanders with
50 players selected in the south to play in an
intermediate Representative Blue vs Gold game
in the June school holidays, from which southern
teams will be named.
Highlights of the Southern Development Series
were:
- The high standard of matches in both age
groups and the good spirit in which they were
played
- The professionalism of the coaching and
development staff provided by clubs, an
example was Clarence with Cameron Thurley
and Brennan Savage coaching the Under 15
team, Mathew Geappen the Under 14 team,
overseen by Cameron Blight, with senior coach
Brett Geappen present on both days.
- The strong showing of young players from the
Kingston and Blackmans Bay area.
- The importance of the rotation system in
providing opportunities to play in all areas of
the ground and in a variety of roles.
The Northern Development Series will be
conducted in the June school holidays on the
following dates:
Tuesday 1st June - Under 14 - Aurora Stadium
Game 1 North L’ton v Launceston 9 – 10.10am
T H E W H I S T L E B LOW E R | Father and Son combination a first
This week we feature Michael and Brayden
White who are the first father/son umpires
to have both officiated at Tasmanian State
League senior level. Michael and Brayden are
Goal Umpires and last week they were both
appointed to the Hobart v Clarence match at
the TCA. To have any father/son combination
involved in the same match (whether footballers
or umpires) is an extremely rare occurrence.
Michael is 42 and commenced Goal Umpiring in
2005. Apart from Brayden, Michael has two other
children, Tyronn (8) and Michaela (4). He has
quickly moved through the umpiring ranks to reach
TSL Senior level. To date, Michael says his best
appointments have been the 2007 SFL Premier
Reserves Grand Final and last seasons TSL opener
between Glenorchy and Launceston at KGV. He
was also on last years TSL Senior finals panel.
Michael works for Blundstone Australia where
he is the factory supervisor and maintenance
technician. Michael says that Wayne Coombe has
been the biggest influence in his umpiring career.
When not working or umpiring, Michael likes to
spend as much time as possible with his family.
Michael says he aims to be a support base for his
son to strive for the AFL. He also wants to be a
positive influence on other young people coming
through the umpiring ranks.
Brayden is only 16 and is a student at Elizabeth
College. Although now a Goal umpire, he has also
had stints as both a Field and Boundary umpire.
Brayden reached senior level at the age of 15 and
has already officiated in 7 TSL Senior matches.
Brayden says his best appointment to date was
when he umpired the 2009 TSL Colts Grand Final
at Bellerive. He says to be involved on grand final
day was a terrific experience and has given him
even more incentive to further his career.
Brayden says that Wayne Coombe (Game Day
Coach), Denis Bishop (Ex Goal Umpires Coach)
and Stuart Allen (Ex VFL Squad umpire) have all
provided great assistance to him in his career.
He also says his father has provided support and
guidance since he commenced umpiring. Brayden
says his long term ambition is to reach AFL level.
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Media partners support Australian football
Leading into the finals series of the inaugural
Wrest Point State League in 2009 you would
have noticed a bigger media presence
promoting the final two rounds of the home
and away season and the four week finals
series. This was largely due to a new threeyear
partnership arrangement with the Hobart
Media Centre.
The Hobart Media Centre partnership with AFL
Tasmania is classified under our major partner
umbrella. The Hobart Media Centre joins the
Foster’s Group, Coca Cola, Aurora Energy, RACT
Insurance, Cadbury and The TOTE as major
partners of AFL Tasmania.
The Hobart Media Centre gives the Wrest
Point State League more local media
coverage than ever before through their
partnership with Southern Cross Television,
SeaFM and Heart 107.3.
As a major partner of AFL Tasmania the Hobart
Media Centre is a great fit with our other media
partners; the Mercury, Examiner and Advocate
newspapers, Tote Sport Radio and our official
Wrest Point State League broadcast partner
ABC TV.
We believe the media coverage that our Wrest
Point State League, clubs and players enjoy is
the best local sport media coverage in Tasmania
and comparable to that anywhere in Australia.
Over the past 4 weeks you would have noticed
our new Wrest Point State League round
promotions on the Hobart Media Centre’s
Southern Cross TV and radio stations SeaFM and
Heart 107.3. These promotional advertisements
are updated each week and will be broadcast
during the home and away season as well as
during the final series in 2010. If you have not
seen them keep eye and ear out for them.
The partnership between the Hobart Media
Centre, AFL Tasmania and the Wrest Point
State League demonstrates the genuine
community and corporate support for
Tasmania’s premier competition.
AFL Tasmania and its partners remain
committed to reinvigorating the great game
of football in the state of Tasmania and to
growing support for Australian football in all
areas of Tasmania.
AFL Tasmania is dedicated to working hard with
all stakeholders to improve the promotion of the
Wrest Point State League and its games, clubs,
and players.
