"You can dictate the way you want to work when you have the power and hire people who understand actors," he says. Asked about not taking on the director's chair (Cusack has helmed several plays for his Chicago-ba.sed New Criminals stage company), Cusack replies, "It's arrogant enough to write, produce and act. That's enough." Instead, George Armitage took the reins. "I had seen his 'Miami Blues' and loved it. I felt George would understand what 1 wanted, which was to do something that is not normally tried: to keep it tense, to keep it real, but lo go for the ab- ûrdity without lacing camp. "He did a great H)b. 1 like a director who.. .is interested in behavior and not just plot. Someone who understands what actors do. Someone who can catch 'moments.'" The film's oddball cast includes Cusack's actress sister Joan and his longtime friend Jeremy Piven, as well as Alan Arkin, Dan Aykroyd and Minnie Driver. For his part, Cusack's part-choirboy, part-gigolo look seems right for a role that demands he be both sensitive and slick—a cute date and a bad appointment. After "Grosse Pointe Blank," Cusack will turn his attention to other projects he has in development. One is a western about "redemption and sacrifice," another an off-kilter look at the NFL in which he would play "the quarterback." But audiences will next see Cusack in a mammoth action/adventure, "Con Air" (arriving this spring via Disney's Touchstone wing), in which he stars opposite Nicolas Cage and John Malkovich. In it, Cusack plays a U.S. marshal. That sounds like an aggressive role for Cusack, but he describes his "Con Air" character as "an eccentric goodie."
