Terry Calvert’s Power Night was guaranteed
to be bursting with stories and laughter –
and it didn’t disappoint.
Top industry names travelled down memory lane at the event, which was held at
the L’Oréal International Academy in Hammersmith, London. The Fellowship for
British Hairdressing’s new President took the celebrity-packed audience on a
journey through the decades, from starting his own business in the 70s to
becoming the face of The Fellowship in the present day. As well as images from
the past three decades, Terry also revealed stunning models that took inspiration
from the past, but he brought them bang up to date by combining textures and
colours for looks that were bold, beautiful and sexy.
The evening was compered by past President Sean Dawson from
HOB Salons, with questions fielded from the audience, which
included Joshua and Daniel Galvin, Richard and Hellen Ward, Mark
Hayes, Alan Hemmings, Stephen Messias and Andrew and Liz
Collinge. “Hairdressing is all about having fun,” Terry declared.
“Hairdressing is a serious business but you can still have fun.” And over
the past 30 years that is definitely what Terry has been having.
1970s
Terry was a young hairdresser in the 70s and had the audience in
stitches as he talked about the pranks and exploits he experienced at
the start of his career. He moved to Germany with £100 in his pocket
where he worked before returning to the UK to open his own
business. “In the 1970s salon decors were bamboo, palm trees and yucca
plants so I coined Clipso - a play on Calypso. The logo even had a palm tree
in it! I opened my first salon in 1978 for just £15,000,” he recalled.
Girls wanted to experiement in the 70s and
hairdressing was a very exciting time as
clients let you play around with their hair
A video displayed some of Terry’s favourite images from the decade,
which saw clashing colours, textures and bright make-up vying for
attention. Then the audience was in for a treat: Terry revealed two
models with Bowie-inspired hair and stunning clothes. “Hairdressing
in the 70s was a very different time - there was no internet and no retouched
