CLUBSTAR First Full Day Workshop With Mahogany PR SALLY LEARMOUTH BY RACHEL GOULD Where else can you get a full day of worldclass hairdressing education for just £10? ClubStar, the youth membership programme of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, teamed up with international hairdressing educators Mahogany this April to pack in demonstrations and work sessions for an inspirational workshop. Darren Newton, Creative Director of the Mahogany Academy and his team shared some of Mahogany’s key techniques and showed the audience how to create outstanding quality cuts and colours. Each member of the audience was required to bring one model and their session bag and then the afternoon was spent in a guided work session. Attendees were able to access Mahogany educators’ extensive experience and knowledge in a focussed and detailed way. And that wasn’t all! The audience also got the opportunity to win a two-day course at the Academy valued at £500. Simon Shaw said: “We are absolutely blown away by Mahogany’s on-going support of ClubStar. We’ve really got momentum with our education now due in no small part to some of the industry’s greatest educators. COLOUR PROJECT PHILOSOPHY HAIRDRESSING BY SALLY LEARMOUTH Nothing was going to stop the Philosophy Team inspire the Colour Project students as the years fourth education seminar took place on 23rd April at the L’Oréal International Academy in London. Philosophy Art Team members Mark Creed & Luke Anderson literally raced to the Academy with seconds to spare after being delayed overseas due to the now infamous ash cloud. The duo literally hit the ground running with their unique brand of education as they shared numerous practical in-salon creative techniques. Philosophy’s Technical Director Mark Creed welcomed the students and then encouraged everyone in the audience to relax, ask as many questions as they wished and most importantly to open their minds to creative colour work. Colour consultation was discussed at length and Mark gave tips and insights into client behaviour that explored both psychology and body language. “Understanding these subliminal messages that clients involuntarily give us will make you a far better communicator and in-turn a fantastic colourist,” stated Mark. Philosophy Creative Director Luke Anderson then took to the stage and launched into his haircut, whilst cutting Luke explained, ”This is one of my signature haircuts that I put to good use in the salon on a daily basis,” he then created a stunning image and he shared a new direction for layering hair, reducing bulk and weight whilst perfectly retaining the length of the hair. Luke adds, “A perfect creative idea that you’ll definitely be able to employ on a great number of your clients.” Mark then went on to explain to the students that this seminar was focused on ‘pure education’ and so to echo this you won’t see the usual ‘show type’ of hairdressing that seldom seem in most salons; instead it would focus on client friendly techniques that would expand on your in salon colour business. The Philosophy Team also avoided the temptation to just focus, promote and share their latest collection instead an allencompassing range of techniques were shared from Philosophy’s numerous collections and Luke & Mark long career. Likewise the colours were varied and included dramatic deep damsons right through to delicate butter blondes infused with gentle caramel tones. The afternoon saw the students put through their colour paces as they worked on mannequin heads completing numerous challenging techniques. Mark & Luke encouraged the students to think artistically and gave them a task which really got the creative juices flowing! Words such as…..Volcano (very topical) & Angelic were written down and handed to each pair of students. The challenge was to imagine themselves creating a photographic collection that was to be entitled with the chosen word. Think laterally, avoid the obvious and push the boundaries,” urged Mark. The results were truly stunning and as each of the teams took to the stage to present their models, inspirations and ideas, it was clear to everybody involved in the day that it had been a highly motivating Colour Project seminar.
