Robert Lobetta and Angelo Seminara and the fabulous Bruce Masefield at the Sassoon Academy – plus so many more opportunities with fabulous artists such as master of the fingerwave Leno d’Aprano - incredible stuff. We have also been invited to Australia again for Hair Expo and possibly have an opportunity lined up for them at HAIR WORLD in Paris in November. So I’m finding the role pretty fulfilling to say the least! Good job I’ve got I’ve got three amazing guys back at the ranch who are all really good at what they do three amazing guys back at Marc Antoni, my brothers Simon, Marcus and Aaron that are letting me get on with it! TC It’s a pretty tall agenda, which nobody seems to realise – so you’ve got your brothers back at the helm but how do you find time to manage the F.A.M.E. Team and run a successful group of six salons? BG I don’t! As I said I’ve got three amazing guys back at the ranch who are all really good at what they do. I’ve always been the creative one that undertakes all the imagery, shows and presentations on behalf of Marc Antoni – so don’t actually think they miss me on a day-to-day basis too much! I’ll have to make sure there’s a job for me to go back to! Seriously though, I’ve got my work cut out for me – I’ve got great support in my office and have invested in a blackberry to aid the lines of communication! TC What’s been your most exciting time with the F.A.M.E. Team to date? BG Although quite strong individuals – the toughest lesson of them all has been to unite them as a team. So I was pleased with the result of their debut presentation to the ClubStar audience at the Wella World Studio. For me that was the first time they sang from the same songsheet. TC Having managed the F.A.M.E. Team for six months now, if there was anything you could change – what would that be? BG I’d have taken a sabbatical from Marc Antoni for 2 years! Seriously though – as the F.A.M.E. Team’s presence has grown and grown with the help of the PR support over the past few years, I was amazed by the offers from iconic hairdressers and manufacturers to help support the team in terms of education. As I said earlier, what initially started as a one-event-a-month programme – could easily turn into a oncea-week-programme – the hardest thing for me is to where to draw the line as all the invitations and opportunities we are presented with are ones that I know the F.A.M.E. Team would like to experience. So going back to your question – I’d have changed the fact that I literally said ‘yes’ to everything for the first six months without the realisation that I would need to be there too! TC Who are your icons in the industry and who inspires you? BG It’s a very mixed bag. I place hairdressers on an iconic status for various reasons – for example – I think my brother Simon – is amazing – I’d absolutely hate to do all the things he has to do in order to run our salon group – but he does it unfailingly. Vidal Sassoon – for being the God of hairdressing and his many, many disciples – and of course you Terry for being the best crack! TC How do you see your involvement within The Fellowship moving forward in the future? BG To be honest Terry with the F.A.M.E. Team management and now the appointment of Vice President – it’s moving pretty quickly – I’m quite happy to stay where I am for the time being! Having said that it’s a brilliant organisation and any role within it is one that I will undertake to the best of my ability. TC If you could pick an ideal person to inspire your F.A.M.E. Team who would that be? BG Think we’ve just done that actually – it was Leno d’Aprano. This man’s an unsung hero – he spent the day with us teaching the team how to fingerwave – the man’s a magician. Now in his ninth decade it was an amazing opportunity for all concerned and he’s a truly wonderful man. TC What’s your most exciting achievement to date? BG Where do I begin? On a professional note it was undoubtedly winning the British Hairdressing Awards Southern Hairdresser of the Year... personally the birth of my twin girls... TC As a manger of the F.A.M.E. Team and Vice President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing what is your vision for the future of The Fellowship? BG Ain’t that your job? To give you a helping hand Terry – here are a few pointers: for the F.A.M.E. Team – most definitely a more structured itinerary for 2011! For the Fellowship... that’s difficult – I do feel that all those concerned have been and are doing a sterling job. What does concern me that as an organisation it is getting bigger and bigger – the event calendar is absolutely full to brimming now - especially with the inauguration of the fabulous new off-shoots such as Project X, Colour Project and ClubStar – just wonder if we’ve got enough manpower to handle it all! It’s quite a small council with 16 members – we’ve certainly got our work cut out! MEDIA MATTERS GARY KELLY Gary Kelly is the Editor-in-Chief of Estetica UK and is based at the company’s UK head office in Mayfair. He worked in Turin, Italy for 11 years before returning to London in 1998 and subsequently taking over the Editorship of the UK edition. Ever since it was first founded in 1946 Estetica has provided the hairdressing industry with a unique insight into the world of international hairdressing. Gary, how did you become the editor of Estetica? I originally worked for Estetica out of our head office in Turin, Italy. I worked across all our international titles but obviously my main interest was in the UK edition. In the early days, my work was very much office-based and it was quite some time before I actually had the opportunity to come to the UK in a work capacity and experience British hairdressing for myself! I remember my first-ever trip, which was to work on our stand at Salon International, and from that moment I was hooked! Had you always had a keen interest in hairdressing? Is suppose the honest answer to this question would be to say that I had always been interested in anything creative or inspirational, but it was only when I experienced hairdressing first-hand on that original trip to Salon International that I realized where my loyalties truly lay! The Fellowship magazine reaches hairdressers all over the UK – what is the best advice that you can offer to them so that they are able to get their work published in Estetica? As with all challenges, it's necessary to build up experience in doing photographic work - no-one can reasonably expect to get their firstever attempts at putting together a collection published in a highend magazine such as Estetica. The competition at this level is very fierce, and so the objective should always be to learn from experience and not be too disappointed if things don't always go according to plan. A photo shoot in a fully-equipped studio with a professional team of photographer, stylist, make-up artist and models will cost thousands, so it's always best to build up that initial experience on a smaller scale before forking out loads of cash. Secondly, styling hair for a shoot is a completely different ball game to salon work or even session work. It's therefore vital to learn the right techniques through structured training and education. Self-belief and confidence are always good qualities to have, but they must also be backed up with the necessary skills and knowledge. What do you think of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing? At Estetica, we have worked in close partnership with The Fellowship from day one. Our launch in 1946 coincided pretty much with the first seeds being sown for the formation of The Fellowship as we know it today. The Fellowship is a truly remarkable organisation insofar as it can bring together the most talented people in our industry while never losing sight of the importance of looking to the future, of training and education, and the formation of young creative minds, so there will always be a new generation of hairdressers who will be willing to step up to the mark and maintain the number one position that British hairdressing enjoys in the international arena. We publish 26 editions of Estetica worldwide and I can promise you that much to the disdain of my international colleagues there is no other country in the world that enjoys the benefits of an organisation such as The Fellowship. How close is your involvement with The Fellowship? As close as it’s possible to be! As a company we have a very important association with The Fellowship as for many years we have published The Fellowship Yearbook, an annual project which takes around 6 months to complete and involves all of our editorial and production team. On a personal level, my admiration for The Fellowship knows no bounds. I particularly hold Events Co-ordinator and all round good egg, Ann Herman, in very high regard and continue to be amazed by how she manages to fit so much into one day. My greatest nightmare is that I could in some way end up on the wrong side of her, hence my on-going efforts to keep her sweet in any way possible. How does your editorial team decide what to focus on in each issue? There are two ways in which we do this. Firstly, at the beginning of each calendar year we establish what our two main themes will be for each issue - one creative and inspirational; the other more professional and technical. Secondly, with these in place, we then work from issue to issue to decide which associated articles we can include and which are relevant to that particular season as well as being newsworthy, of course. Some articles even go international, and are published in several of our editions worldwide.
