Terry Calvert
Not only doesThe Fellowship have
a new President but as a country
we now have a new government
which will hopefully see
a change in our economy too!
Hi everyone and welcome to the 2nd issue of the new Fellowship Magazine
(FM). So, not only does the Fellowship have a new President but as a country
we now have a new government which will hopefully see a change in our
economy too!
We’ve got an event filled magazine with our editor and roving reporters sharing
all the exciting educational and creative events like the F.A.M.E. Team’s first stage
show and day with Angelo Seminara. Interviews with the Fellowship Award
winning Metropolis salon, Estetica’s Gary Kelly and my very own Vice President,
Bruno Marc Giamattei, plus loads more!
You can also read about my Power Night which I enjoyed doing – for those of you
who were there on the night – I hope you enjoyed it too!
the
interview
president’s
Terry Calvert interviews the new
Vice President – Bruno Marc Giamattei
As President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, I’ve created a series of interviews with members of the Fellowship Council as I feel
that it is important to introduce fellow members to the team that make the Fellowship tick. As new to all the regalia is me – is my brand new
Vice President – Bruno Marc Giamattei. Bruno shares this role with Mark Creed who I will be interviewing in our next issue.
TC Bruno as my new Vice President, what
does that mean to you?
BG It was a surprise, came totally out of the
blue – but a role that I accept and will
undertake to the best of my ability. To be
elected into this role is indeed an honour –
doesn’t it also kind of measure my
popularity?! If so – I will have to make sure
I don’t get too big for my boots!
TC You have been a member of The Fellowship
for 12 years, but recently you’ve become more
active on the council and now F.A.M.E. Team
manager. How are you finding this role?
BG Would have loved a job description
prior to my acceptance of the role – having
said that – hand on heart, I’m enjoying it –
and I’m learning a lot too! These guys have
such a fabulous fabulous opportunity – it’s
amazing – I thought we’d be out and about
at least once a month but more often than
not it’s once a week – so it’s a lot of time and
commitment on everyone’s part. They are
still young and they need guidance so they
need my constant support and amazing
organisational skills! Seriously though – we
are only in May – and they’ve already done
a shoot with Andrew O’Toole, they have an
Art Director for the year who is the highly
credible Errol Douglas MBE, at the end of
the ‘phone, had days with Tim Hartley,
WWW.FELLOWSHIPHAIR.COM 2 WWW.CLUBSTARHAIR.CO.UK

Robert Lobetta and Angelo Seminara and
the fabulous Bruce Masefield at the Sassoon
Academy – plus so many more
opportunities with fabulous artists such as
master of the fingerwave Leno d’Aprano -
incredible stuff. We have also been invited
to Australia again for Hair Expo and
possibly have an opportunity lined up for
them at HAIR WORLD in Paris in
November. So I’m finding the role pretty
fulfilling to say the least! Good job I’ve got
I’ve got three amazing guys
back at the ranch who are all
really good at what they do
three amazing guys back at Marc Antoni,
my brothers Simon, Marcus and Aaron that
are letting me get on with it!
TC It’s a pretty tall agenda, which nobody
seems to realise – so you’ve got your brothers
back at the helm but how do you find time to
manage the F.A.M.E. Team and run a
successful group of six salons?
BG I don’t! As I said I’ve got three amazing
guys back at the ranch who are all really
good at what they do. I’ve always been the
creative one that undertakes all the imagery,
shows and presentations on behalf of Marc
Antoni – so don’t actually think they miss
me on a day-to-day basis too much! I’ll have
to make sure there’s a job for me to go back
to! Seriously though, I’ve got my work cut
out for me – I’ve got great support in my
office and have invested in a blackberry to
aid the lines of communication!
TC What’s been your most exciting time with
the F.A.M.E. Team to date?
BG Although quite strong individuals – the
toughest lesson of them all has been to unite
them as a team. So I was pleased with the
result of their debut presentation to the
ClubStar audience at the Wella World
Studio. For me that was the first time they
sang from the same songsheet.
TC Having managed the F.A.M.E. Team for
six months now, if there was anything you
could change – what would that be?
BG I’d have taken a sabbatical from Marc
Antoni for 2 years! Seriously though – as the
F.A.M.E. Team’s presence has grown and
grown with the help of the PR support over
the past few years, I was amazed by the
offers from iconic hairdressers and
manufacturers to help support the team in
terms of education.
As I said earlier, what
initially started as a
one-event-a-month
programme – could
easily turn into a oncea-week-programme
–
the hardest thing for me
is to where to draw the
line as all the invitations
and opportunities we are presented with
are ones that I know the F.A.M.E. Team
would like to experience.
So going back to your question – I’d have
changed the fact that I literally said ‘yes’ to
everything for the first six months without
the realisation that I would need to be there
too!
TC Who are your icons in the industry and
who inspires you?
BG It’s a very mixed bag. I place
hairdressers on an iconic status for various
reasons – for example – I think my brother
Simon – is amazing – I’d absolutely hate to
do all the things he has to do in order to run
our salon group – but he does it unfailingly.
Vidal Sassoon – for being the God of
hairdressing and his many, many disciples –
and of course you Terry for being the best
crack!
TC How do you see your involvement within
The Fellowship moving forward in the future?
BG To be honest Terry with the F.A.M.E.
Team management and now the
appointment of Vice President – it’s moving
pretty quickly – I’m quite happy to stay
where I am for the time being! Having said
that it’s a brilliant organisation and any role
within it is one that I will undertake to the
best of my ability.
TC If you could pick an ideal person to inspire
your F.A.M.E. Team who would that be?
BG Think we’ve just done that actually – it
was Leno d’Aprano. This man’s an unsung
hero – he spent the day with us teaching the
team how to fingerwave – the man’s a
magician. Now in his ninth decade it was an
amazing opportunity for all concerned and
he’s a truly wonderful man.
TC What’s your most exciting achievement
to date?
BG Where do I begin? On a professional
note it was undoubtedly winning the British
Hairdressing Awards Southern Hairdresser
of the Year... personally the birth of my
twin girls...
TC As a manger of the F.A.M.E. Team and
Vice President of the Fellowship for British
Hairdressing what is your vision for the
future of The Fellowship?
BG Ain’t that your job? To give you a
helping hand Terry – here are a few
pointers: for the F.A.M.E. Team – most
definitely a more structured itinerary for
2011! For the Fellowship... that’s difficult –
I do feel that all those concerned have been
and are doing a sterling job. What does
concern me that as an organisation it is
getting bigger and bigger – the event
calendar is absolutely full to brimming now
- especially with the inauguration of the
fabulous new off-shoots such as Project X,
Colour Project and ClubStar – just wonder if
we’ve got enough manpower to handle it
all! It’s quite a small council with 16
members – we’ve certainly got our work
cut out!
It’s a brilliant
organisation and
any role within it
is one that I will
undertake to the
best of my ability
MEDIA MATTERS
GARY KELLY
Gary Kelly is the Editor-in-Chief of
Estetica UK and is based at the company’s
UK head office in Mayfair. He worked in Turin, Italy
for 11 years before returning to London in 1998 and
subsequently taking over the Editorship of the UK edition.
Ever since it was first founded in 1946 Estetica has provided the
hairdressing industry with a unique insight into the world of
international hairdressing.
Gary, how did you become the editor of Estetica?
I originally worked for Estetica out of our head office in Turin, Italy. I
worked across all our international titles but obviously my main
interest was in the UK edition. In the early days, my work was very
much office-based and it was quite some time before I actually had
the opportunity to come to the UK in a work capacity and experience
British hairdressing for myself! I remember my first-ever trip, which
was to work on our stand at Salon International, and from that
moment I was hooked!
Had you always had a keen interest in hairdressing?
Is suppose the honest answer to this question would be to say that I
had always been interested in anything creative or inspirational, but
it was only when I experienced hairdressing first-hand on that
original trip to Salon International that I realized where my loyalties
truly lay!
The Fellowship magazine reaches hairdressers all over the UK – what is
the best advice that you can offer to them so that they are able to get
their work published in Estetica?
As with all challenges, it's necessary to build up experience in doing
photographic work - no-one can reasonably expect to get their firstever
attempts at putting together a collection published in a highend
magazine such as Estetica. The competition at this level is very
fierce, and so the objective should always be to learn from experience
and not be too disappointed if things don't always go according to
plan. A photo shoot in a fully-equipped studio with a professional
team of photographer, stylist, make-up artist and models will cost
thousands, so it's always best to build up that initial experience on a
smaller scale before forking out loads of cash. Secondly, styling hair
for a shoot is a completely different ball game to salon work or even
session work. It's therefore vital to learn the right techniques through
structured training and education. Self-belief and confidence are
always good qualities to have, but they must also be backed up with
the necessary skills and knowledge.
What do you think of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing?
At Estetica, we have worked in close partnership with The
Fellowship from day one. Our launch in 1946 coincided pretty much
with the first seeds being sown for the formation of The Fellowship
as we know it today. The Fellowship is a truly remarkable
organisation insofar as it can bring together the most talented people
in our industry while never losing sight of the importance of looking
to the future, of training and education, and the formation of young
creative minds, so there will always be a new generation of
hairdressers who will be willing to step up to the mark and maintain
the number one position that British hairdressing enjoys in the
international arena. We publish 26 editions of Estetica worldwide
and I can promise you that much to the disdain of my international
colleagues there is no other country in the world that enjoys the
benefits of an organisation such as The Fellowship.
How close is your involvement with The Fellowship?
As close as it’s possible to be! As a company we have a very
important association with The Fellowship as for many years we
have published The Fellowship Yearbook, an annual project which
takes around 6 months to complete and involves all of our editorial
and production team. On a personal level, my admiration for
The Fellowship knows no bounds. I particularly hold Events
Co-ordinator and all round good egg, Ann Herman, in very high
regard and continue to be amazed by how she manages to fit so
much into one day. My greatest nightmare is that I could in some
way end up on the wrong side of her, hence my on-going efforts to
keep her sweet in any way possible.
How does your editorial team decide what to focus on in each issue?
There are two ways in which we do this. Firstly, at the beginning of
each calendar year we establish what our two main themes will be
for each issue - one creative and inspirational; the other more
professional and technical. Secondly, with these in place, we then
work from issue to issue to decide which associated articles we can
include and which are relevant to that particular season as well as
being newsworthy, of course. Some articles even go international,
and are published in several of our editions worldwide.
Ross Taylor of Falltricks, Romford:
What a moment, the first show for the F.A.M.E.
Team and what better audience to do it in front
of, ClubStar! Today was one of our biggest tests
so far as we had never performed on stage
together doing hair, there was a lot of excitement
and nerves all rolled into one! We got to the
Wella World Studio at 10am to prepare our
models for the 7.30pm start. There were 10
models in all 4 cuts 4 hair-up plus 2 presentation
models. The exercise brought us closer together as
a unit – it was our aim to ensure that everything
was perfect. It was great to see over 130 ClubStar
members in the audience – all young and
enthusiastic – as we are! Our confidence grew as
the evening went on and we felt the warmth from
the amazing audience.
F.A.M.E . TEAM
F.A.M.E.TEAM DIARY
This month the Fellowship for British Hairdressing
F.A.M.E. Team enjoyed a double date, the first with
the truly iconic multi-award winning hairdresser,
Angelo Seminara, the second with the legendary
Leno d’Aprano – here Ross Taylor reports for
FM magazine:
DAY WITH ANGELO SEMINARA
how we could enhance them to make them even better. In the
afternoon we were given the freedom to do whatever we wanted to
express our creativity – our choice was to take advantage of the
intimacy of the event and literally ask Angelo absolutely everything
that came into our minds! At the end of a long, but amazingly
creative day we all left L’Oréal absolutely stunned by how much
Angelo knows. We can’t thank him enough.
DAY WITH LENO D’APRANO
As a F.A.M.E. Team member I appreciate how lucky we have been to
work with some of the biggest names within the industry – and
Angelo was no exception! We had the honour and utmost pleasure to
work with the British Hairdresser of the Year 2007. We all met at the
L’Oréal Academy in Hammersmith prompt at 9.30am – we were all
so excited but nervous at the same time. However, when Angelo
walked into the room he made us feel very at ease. To me he has got
to be one of the most ‘laid-back’ hairdressers I’ve ever met which
gave me a sense of comfort and ease. To start the day, Angelo sat us
down and chatted about himself and what he was going to be
showing us throughout the day. He then turned the tables and asked
us to introduce ourselves and share our passions – all of which are so
completely different – I do believe he was quite entertained! Angelo
then demonstrated what we were going to be doing throughout the
rest of morning – he wanted us to not copy it as such but reinterpret
it, giving our individual twist which we all thought was great!
On completing our task – Angelo gave each of us fabulous advice on
As a team this was going to be our first opportunity to meet the
legendary Leno d’Aprano. We had heard so many amazing things
about him it was fabulous to meet him. At 81 Leno’s story was a long
one – but what a fabulous tale to tell. As he showed us his finger
and marcel waves we were spellbound. Leno was a fabulous tutor
and to learn these skills from the master was memorable –
educational and fun! Leno took time to show us his tricks and tools
of the trade – one of which was one of the biggest and heaviest
hairdryers we had ever seen – and the tongs were so so heavy!
He’d also brought along a copy of the Hairdressers Journal from the
50’s which featured his work! Following Leno’s demonstration we
went to our blocks and tried it out for ourselves with Leno giving us
great pointers in how to attain perfection. By the end of the day we
all felt that we had learned so much it was absolutely incredible.
This was a great day and we are all very proud to have met Leno
and hope to work with him again in the near future.
PROJECT X
Getting some
fashion insight
BY HARRIET EVANS
The Fellowship’s Project X students all arrived at the
Sassoon Academy London this month for an action
packed day called Fashion Insight.
The workshop provided the group with a
fascinating insight into the world of fashion
and session styling and was designed to
show the students how strongly linked the
hairdressing industry is to the world of
fashion. “Hair is the ultimate fashion accessory”
said project leader Robert Eaton “and this can
be seen by some of the amazing work produced by
the session stylists who work the fashion weeks
and do the shoots we all look at regularly in
magazines. We wanted to show the students a
different side to the hairdressing industry and
what opportunities are out there.”
The morning began with the guys
presenting their fashion-themed mood
boards and it’s clear that making a
presentation each month is really helping
the team polish their presentation skills in
preparation for their final show at Salon
International exhibition.
Next they were joined by a regular on the
fashion scene, Herman Ho. Herman is a key
member of the Headmasters artistic team,
whose job involves working on fashion
weeks, producing shoots and editorial work
and developing the artistic direction of the
Headmasters group. He demonstrated
several looks and shared images and videos
of shows he has worked on, an amazing
inspirational insight into session styling.
Next was another demo on session skills
from Davide Scarna from Sassoon, who
proved to be a massive inspiration to the
team and the day finished with a talk by
fashion guru and author Caroline Cox,
who gave the students a real insight into
the world of fashion, focusing on how to
identify trends and maintain a credible
relationship between hair and fashion.
“Another amazing day had by all the team” said
Robert. “It’s great to see them growing in
confidence and gaining more and more
inspiration and knowledge to achieve great things
in the future.”
BEHIND THE SCENES
FELLOWSHIP EVENTS
COORDINATOR
ANN HERMAN
At the Fellowship Luncheon in 2009 you
mentioned that it was your job to sell the
very first tickets of a Fellowship Event. Can
you tell us how the idea came about, when it
was and how much the tickets were
The first Fellows Luncheon took place on
9th December, 1985 in the Barber Surgeons
Hall, Barbican. The idea came from the
Chairman at this time, Xavier Wenger. I was
given the job of selling tickets for the event
which cost £32.50 and I can tell you that this
was not an easy task and I only managed to
sell 25 tickets! The first "Fellows with
Honours" were awarded and I was
delighted to be amongst the first to be
presented with an award by then President
Stephen Cohen. It might interest people to
know that the recipients of the Awards were
then sent an invoice to cover the cost of the
medal! The event stayed at this venue for a
couple of years when it became so popular
we moved to the Cafe Royal, when we
outgrew that space we moved to the
Dorchester which is where it has been held
ever since. This event has now proved to be
the most popular in the hairdressing
calendar.
Can you give us a potted version of your
‘career’ to date with the Fellowship for
British Hairdressing?
I was asked by the Chairman, Xavier
Wenger to join the Fellowship Council and I
used to attend our monthly meetings which
were held in a very grotty room above a
pub in Knightbridge. It was here that I met
Christofer Mann and I started to assist
Christofer who was responsible for putting
on shows for the Fellowship. A job I
eventually took over and have been doing
ever since.
As Events Coordinator for the Fellowship –
what does your job entail on a daily basis?
Along with the Fellowship Council we plan
events for the coming year involving
members throughout the UK. It’s then my
job to ensure that we have a good range of
presenters at each of these events. Sounds
simple but because we are holding so many
events up and down the country it keeps
me very busy!
In 2008 you were awarded the prestigious
title of Patron of Honour what did this mean
to you?
In 1993 I was given the first Fellow with
Distinction Award. In 2004 I received a
Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2008
I was made Patron of Honour of The
Fellowship. This is the highest honour given
to any Member of The Fellowship and I am
very proud of it.
Prior to your all consuming work for The
Fellowship you ran your own busy London
salon, when you look at salons and the
technology they have available at their
fingertips today – what would have helped
you most when you were at the helm?
Sometimes I am asked by the very young
members whether I was a hairdresser. This
makes me laugh for I realise that it must be
very difficult for some of these young
people today to ever imagine an 84 year old
doing what they are now doing. Yes I had
my Salon in Camden and a very busy salon
it was. I just loved every day I worked there
and only wish I could wind the clock back
and do it all again! The young hairdressers
today don't know just how fortunate they
are with all the technology available. Things
were not quite like that when I was actively
hairdressing: unstable colours, awful liquid
peroxide to name just two!
What’s the highlight of your Fellowship Year?
The highlight of the Fellowship Year just has
to be Salon International which after many
many years being at Wembley is now held
at Excel in Docklands. My work on that
beings in April and continues right through
the summer months until the event in
October. I have great cooperation from the
Fellowship Business partners with whom I
work very closely.
What’s your advice to up-and-coming
hairdressers who want to showcase their
work to The Fellowship?
Another of my favourite events is Members
Night which are held twice a year. This
enables young hairdressers to showcase
their work. From these evenings we
"discover" new talent who will eventually be
invited to take part in Salon.
Personally I would love to see more young
people in The Fellowship and the gateway
to this is our ClubStar. ClubStar is open to
young hairdressers aged from 16 to 25 and
the opportunities are endless. Young
members also have the opportunity to apply
for a place in the F.A.M.E. Team just like
Errol Douglas MBE, Antoinette Beenders,
Lisa Shepherd, Sean Dawson and Jamie
Stevens did – to name but a few! One of the
greatest thrills for me is to see these young
hairdressers make an impression in our
industry and travel the world showing their
skills (unheard of in my day).
You’ve earned the reputation of the Mary
Portas of hairdressing .... not only how you
can help change and improve young
hairdressers profile but in the way you dress
– what’s the secret of your fabulous
wardrobe!
Thanks for the compliment! I must admit
I’ve always loved fashion and I’m always
interested in trends coming. I’m a bit of a
magpie in terms of my style... I steal good
ideas from people I think look good and
interpret them to suit me.
TERRYCA
BY RUTH HUNSLEY
Terry Calvert’s Power Night was guaranteed
to be bursting with stories and laughter –
and it didn’t disappoint.
Top industry names travelled down memory lane at the event, which was held at
the L’Oréal International Academy in Hammersmith, London. The Fellowship for
British Hairdressing’s new President took the celebrity-packed audience on a
journey through the decades, from starting his own business in the 70s to
becoming the face of The Fellowship in the present day. As well as images from
the past three decades, Terry also revealed stunning models that took inspiration
from the past, but he brought them bang up to date by combining textures and
colours for looks that were bold, beautiful and sexy.
The evening was compered by past President Sean Dawson from
HOB Salons, with questions fielded from the audience, which
included Joshua and Daniel Galvin, Richard and Hellen Ward, Mark
Hayes, Alan Hemmings, Stephen Messias and Andrew and Liz
Collinge. “Hairdressing is all about having fun,” Terry declared.
“Hairdressing is a serious business but you can still have fun.” And over
the past 30 years that is definitely what Terry has been having.
1970s
Terry was a young hairdresser in the 70s and had the audience in
stitches as he talked about the pranks and exploits he experienced at
the start of his career. He moved to Germany with £100 in his pocket
where he worked before returning to the UK to open his own
business. “In the 1970s salon decors were bamboo, palm trees and yucca
plants so I coined Clipso - a play on Calypso. The logo even had a palm tree
in it! I opened my first salon in 1978 for just £15,000,” he recalled.
Girls wanted to experiement in the 70s and
hairdressing was a very exciting time as
clients let you play around with their hair
A video displayed some of Terry’s favourite images from the decade,
which saw clashing colours, textures and bright make-up vying for
attention. Then the audience was in for a treat: Terry revealed two
models with Bowie-inspired hair and stunning clothes. “Hairdressing
in the 70s was a very different time - there was no internet and no retouched
images to market yourself, so you opened the doors and hoped people would
come in. But some things never change - back then people wanted a great
hair cut and they want that today too. We might wrap it up with
champagne, treatments and a great decor, but at the end of the day it’s the
hair cut that matters.” He added: “Girls wanted to experiment in the 70s
and hairdressing was a very exciting time as clients let you play around with
their hair.”
1980s
Moving to the 80s, Terry talked about venturing into the session
world - and his love for creating beautiful images. “Being successful is
a balancing act - it’s no use having a great business with lots of money if you
aren’t creative; but you can’t be creative without a good business so you need
to balance and work at them both.”
Hair was big and bold and I loved working
with curls and ringlets, making them look
sexy and romantic
The launch of HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards was a turning point
for Terry, who entered in 1985 and won Southern Hairdresser of the
Year for two consecutive years. “I loved creating images and making the
models look beautiful, sexy and feminine.” He stressed how important it
was to get work published and imagery really started to come to the
fore of hairdressing. However, while his creativity was rocketing, his
business started to suffer. He opened a salon in London’s Covent
Garden, which turned into a disaster. “It was the boom times and prices
WWW.FELLOWSHIPHAIR.COM 10 WWW.CLUBSTARHAIR.CO.UK

An absolutely fantastic evening. A true seasoned pro
who delivered a very entertaining presentation that
included beautiful hair, creative insights and a whole lot
of fun and wit. Terry Calvert at this best! Mark Creed
just rocketed - the rent went from £25,000 to £75,000 a year. I had no choice
but to close it, which was a shame as it was attracting a lot of people but I
just couldn’t afford the rent. That was the first time something hadn’t
worked for me and it was hard,” he said. His work throughout this
decade was Vivienne Westwood-inspired, with structured clothes
and new romantic curls. “Hair was big and bold and I loved working with
curls and ringlets, making them look sexy and romantic.”
1990s
Terry’s winning streak continued in the 90s as he won HJ’s Eastern
Hairdresser of the Year and the L’Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy.
It was also the birth of the celebrity hairdresser, with Anthony
Mascolo, Trevor Sorbie and Andrew Collinge all regularly making
headline news. “It was a hard time to compete as there were so many great
names and so much interest in the industry. It’s all about confidence; we all
lose it sometimes but it always comes back,” he stated.
It was a hard time to compete as there were
so many great names and so much interest
in the industry
His imagery in this decade was bold, flirtatious, exciting and
directional and Terry really played with movement and textures to
constantly push the boundaries. “I love borrowing ideas from the past,
but turning them into something new for the future,” he said. Models
graced the stage with quirky, structured updos – and a little cheeky
reminder that it should be fun as one of the models exposed a
diamante-covered rear!
Terry’s Power Night for The Fellowship was absolutely brilliant. It was incredibly interesting to hear Terry explain in
detail and chart the history of Clipso over the last four decades through his impressive photographic collections. The
highlight of the Power Night for both Liz and myself was to see such stunning work created on all the models from the
70’s to the present day. It was an inspirational and thoroughly entertaining event. Andrew Collinge
2000s
With new technology, new products and enhancements in
photography, Terry pushed his creativity – and his business - and
made it into a household name. He ventured back in to London with
Darren Fowler running the Windmill Street salon, and the team won
HJ’s Artistic Team of the Year twice. Terry and his team became
regulars on the show and seminar circuit and his business went from
strength to strength.
Now, he has taken over as Fellowship President and is looking
forward to taking the organisation into a new direction. “We are here
to share our knowledge and push forward the reputation of the industry and
its creativity. I want to make hairdressing exciting, fun and professional and
I have lots of things planned.” If the future is as colourful as Terry’s past
then we’re all in for a bright time ahead.
I want to make hairdressing
CLUBSTAR
First Full Day
Workshop
With Mahogany
PR SALLY LEARMOUTH
BY RACHEL GOULD
Where else can you get a full day of worldclass
hairdressing education for just £10?
ClubStar, the youth membership
programme of the Fellowship for British
Hairdressing, teamed up with international
hairdressing educators Mahogany this
April to pack in demonstrations and work
sessions for an inspirational workshop.
Darren Newton, Creative Director of the
Mahogany Academy and his team shared
some of Mahogany’s key techniques and
showed the audience how to create
outstanding quality cuts and colours. Each
member of the audience was required to bring
one model and their session bag and then the
afternoon was spent in a guided work session.
Attendees were able to access Mahogany
educators’ extensive experience and
knowledge in a focussed and detailed way.
And that wasn’t all! The audience also got
the opportunity to win a two-day course at
the Academy valued at £500. Simon Shaw
said: “We are absolutely blown away by
Mahogany’s on-going support of ClubStar. We’ve
really got momentum with our education now
due in no small part to some of the industry’s
greatest educators. ClubStar gives young people
unprecedented access to first class learning
experiences and we are really proud.”
COLOUR PROJECT
PHILOSOPHY
HAIRDRESSING
BY SALLY LEARMOUTH
Nothing was going to stop the Philosophy
Team inspire the Colour Project students
as the years fourth education seminar
took place on 23rd April at the L’Oréal
International Academy in London.
Philosophy Art Team members Mark Creed & Luke Anderson
literally raced to the Academy with seconds to spare after being
delayed overseas due to the now infamous ash cloud. The duo
literally hit the ground running with their unique brand of
education as they shared numerous practical in-salon creative
techniques.
Philosophy’s Technical Director Mark Creed welcomed the students
and then encouraged everyone in the audience to relax, ask as many
questions as they wished and most importantly to open their minds
to creative colour work. Colour consultation was discussed at length
and Mark gave tips and insights into client behaviour that explored
both psychology and body language. “Understanding these subliminal
messages that clients involuntarily give us will make you a far better
communicator and in-turn a fantastic colourist,” stated Mark. Philosophy
Creative Director Luke Anderson then took to the stage and
launched into his haircut, whilst cutting Luke explained, ”This is one
of my signature haircuts that I put to good use in the salon on a daily basis,”
he then created a stunning image and he shared a new direction for
layering hair, reducing bulk and weight whilst perfectly retaining the
length of the hair. Luke adds, “A perfect creative idea that you’ll definitely
be able to employ on a great number of your clients.” Mark then went on
to explain to the students that this seminar was focused on ‘pure
education’ and so to echo this you won’t see the usual ‘show type’ of
hairdressing that seldom seem in most salons; instead it would focus
on client friendly techniques that would expand on your in salon
colour business. The Philosophy Team also avoided the temptation to
just focus, promote and share their latest collection instead an allencompassing
range of techniques were shared from Philosophy’s
numerous collections and Luke & Mark long career. Likewise the
colours were varied and included dramatic deep damsons right
through to delicate butter blondes infused with gentle caramel tones.
The afternoon saw the students put through their colour paces as
they worked on mannequin heads completing numerous
challenging techniques. Mark & Luke encouraged the students to
think artistically and gave them a task which really got the creative
juices flowing! Words such as…..Volcano (very topical) & Angelic
were written down and handed to each pair of students. The
challenge was to imagine themselves creating a photographic
collection that was to be entitled with the chosen word. Think
laterally, avoid the obvious and push the boundaries,” urged Mark.
The results were truly stunning and as each of the teams took to the
stage to present their models, inspirations and ideas, it was clear to
everybody involved in the day that it had been a highly motivating
Colour Project seminar.
FELLOWSHIP AWARD WINNERS
Metropo
it’s se
Metropolis Hairdressing, Kingston-upon-Thames, won the coveted
Best Individual Salon of the Year Award at the 2009 Fellowship Luncheon
and Awards – an occasion when salon owner Robert Masciave was also
made a Fellowship Fellow with Honours. So what makes his salon special?
“In a competitive area such as
Kingston, we needed to create
a salon service noticeably
better than any other”
The Fellowship’s core equity –
strength through quality – is precisely
what the Metropolis salon offers. In
recognition of its structured approach
to hairdressing excellence and top
notch customer care, the salon has
been named ‘the most stylish salon in
the area’ and ‘an excellent and
enjoyable experience with friendly
and well-mannered staff’ by Vogue
and Sunday Times Style magazines.
The Metropolis experience has a very distinctive edge. “In a
competitive area such as Kingston, we needed to create a salon service
noticeably better than any other,” explains Metropolis owner Robert
Masciave. “And with our unique Metropolis Experience package, I believe
we have achieved this”.
The essence of Metropolis is to be obsessive about giving each
client customised style and personalised attention; its promise is to
treat every client like a family friend and ensure they feel
attractive, confident and happy. “We aim to develop clients to become
Metropolistas, who understand, buy into and become an integral part of
the Metropolis family,” says Robert.
The salon has worked with focus and determination to secure a
duel reputation: excellence in customer service and creativity alike.
Its approach is to create The Metropolis Experience for every client,
every visit. And although the process is formulaic, it’s become
second nature to the salon team members who operate with easy
informality, so the experience feels real, not artificial.
Metropolis hairdressing represents classic lines with a modern
edge, the work embracing a customer care programme which is
totally interlinked with skills and education. All team members are
trained to be friendly and warm, down-to-earth and be good
listeners so they become trusted advisors.
“Team members are trained to
incorporate certain key phrases and
actions during critical touch points
during appointments to bring out
specific, desired emotional responses
from the client,” explains Robert.
“There are seven specific steps to be
covered during the appointment,
from the minute the client walks in
to the minute she leaves.”
WWW.FELLOWSHIPHAIR.COM 15 WWW.CLUBSTARHAIR.CO.UK

is
cret to success
The emotional benefits client’s experience include feeling
welcomed, special, attractive, proud of their appearance and ‘part
of the ‘family’. The functional benefit is their take out of getting a
suitably fashionable, quality cut and colour, a style they can easy
do themselves, so they look great every day.
And to underline the special nature of service the client can expect,
the Metropolis Style Book outlines the ethos, services and styles
the salon offers, while a well-subscribed to Loyalty Card rewards
regulars for their fidelity. Revlon Ambassador Robert knows that to
be effective, the Metropolis brand must be continually re-energised
and refreshed. “The brand is reviewed at weekly meetings where team
members are encouraged to share stories about how they bring the brand to
life and the impact it has on the business and the clients,” says Robert.
“New employees are fully immersed in our culture, being given both brand
tutorial and coaching sessions when they start work. We work hard on
skills training and although we have a strong package of in-salon training
for all staff, achieving formal qualifications for NVQ Levels is actively
encouraged,” says Robert.
A F.A.M.E. Team member himself in 1994, evidence of the Metropolis
training programme success is evidenced by two team members being
included in the Fellowship F.A.M.E. Team final selection.
Its creative reputation makes
Metropolis in constant demand
for shows, demos and seminars,
Robert ensuring all staff
members contribute to these
exciting and motivational events
to further their personal
development.
So with all of this in mind – it
seems only right and proper
that Metropolis won the Best
Individual Salon of the Year
Award.
“It is an honour to have achieved
such a highly valued award as this,”
said Robert at a Champagne, crudités and hair show party held in
the Kingston salon to celebrate the award success. “What makes this
award incredibly special is that you’re nominated and judged by high
calibre hairdressers, so you are being recognised by your contemporaries.
And for me to have been made Fellow with Honours too – well, that is
such a huge credit of respect,” said Robert with pride.
